First time he's been out of a cone in a few weeks. Back to his normal. He had an ulcer on his eye that lasted a few months. His surgery was Wednesday and it went very well!

Day 3 conditions at Whitefish remind me of home in Minnesota skiing. Clouds rolling in but that's kept the mashed potatoes away.

Day 1 of 1 in Pyha, Finland

Clear blue skies. Snow was pretty icy everywhere, but fluffy in the shadows. Temps in the 20's.

Small mountain, not crowded at all. Would not make a destination trip for it, but if in northern Finland, would recommend making a day trip out of it. Crazy how much cheaper everything is over here.

Daughter, the cautious technical skier is about halfway down. Son is a blip at the bottom, bombed the whole run without a single turn.

Still plotting my low budget ski bum road trip to probably Purg, if the base holds up, last weekend of March. It's 46 now, was only 32 when I was there 6 weeks ago.

Very helpful indeed! Best way to kill a few hours with a 12 year old, is the train museum worth a visit?

The train museum is a cool stop but it's a little eclectic! I've taken my nieces there and they seemed to enjoy it.

Colorado parks and wildlife has a hatchery in Durango. The wildlife museum is pretty cool! You would want to call them and check hours ahead of time.

Love McCoy park for the kids. My favorite run is over by arrowhead. Take little brave to Roughlock down the bachelors gulch. Super fast groomed run through houses and under bridges. Have fun!

Birds of Prey is fun but there's not enough variety on it to be my favorite. Don't get me wrong, it's a must due to the steepness but it's not a run I want to do all day. It's also the busiest black on the mountain.

I've always liked you my guy. You're good people. Shoot me a message and I'll give you some binding discount options. $100-175 for the best bindings on the market.
good fortune hit me today.

Got a call from SkiEsstentials and they told me the demo Ripsticks they were planning to sell me weren't in good enough condition for their liking. Instead, they offered to send new ones, with regular mounted bindings, for $100 more.

So, New 2025 Ripsticks and Marker 13 Griffon Bindings (all new and regular mounted) for $650. Not bad!!

I asked if he suggested the Markers vs. Attacks or Looks and he said the griffons do well with the wider ski and what they suggest. I think those retail at $270 new.

Shipped today and should be ready for boot DIN dial-in once we hit the ski shop Saturday night for oldest kiddo's rentals.

Little Brave was my dads fav.

First three chairs for us were always Chair 16 up then out skiers left to Sawbuck first run, up 16 out skiers right to cabin fever and down second run, and then 16 up and over to Arrowhead and down LB. Then wed leave dad in the dust and head over to Strawberry or Larkspur or into the BG trees or BC trees and then circle back for lunch at Zach Cabin, then ride a couple more with him and then hed ski home and we go drop chair 1 and rose bowl until cookie time.

Hella great memories. RIP dad.

And no way am I giving up my fav runs at BC. I will say if it's a cold hard pack groomer day and you want to fly:

Short versin:,

Chair 1 Up, out skiers left to Latigo. Latigo straightline and stay left, at the drop into lower ltigo stay high onto Upper dally then drop under the chair past the race center and then Centennial to finish face or 1876. That was our old downhill track.

Extended had two options the above but you start at top of BOP, move to Solitude to Centennial spruce face, then cut right and down ltigo or straight bust it over willy face to the flats and to finish.

Best on map marked trail is Royal Elk IMO.

Worst Chairs (before they built out McCoy) are probs Arrowbahn or Larkspur. Outside of Grouse, the best trees of you know where to look are all between Larkspur and BG. So Larkspur is great just not for skiing whats under it. It's a transition Chair to BOP moving east or BG/Strawberry moving west.

Kinda confused about his comment. Bindings are designed to fit multiple width waists. B90/95, B1115, etc.

The width of the ski has no impact on the functionality of the binding. NONE. You want the bindings to be no bigger than 5-7mm outside your edge/sidewall.

For instance you wouldn't put a B115 on a 90-95 waist as you'd have a fat amount of brake pushing off the sidewall. You also wouldn't be able to put a B95 on a 105-110 waist.

My personal preference on bindings is

Look Pivots, Tyrolia Attack, and Marker Griffon are the best all things equal and considered.

Pivots are built much sturdier for the DIN rating but weight considerably more. The Pivot's allow you to pivot the back heel because of the rotating heel piece but that can create issues w ease of getting into and out of the ski.

The attacks and griffons are a more versatile and lighter alternative.

Now between the Griffon and the Attacks, the Griffon offers better power transmission, energy absorbtion, and vertical heel elasticity and have a reputation for more durable construction.

Griffons

1030g / binding
Triple Pivot Elite 3 toes
Inner PIVOT 3 heel
Anti Ice Rail
Height Adjustable Siding Plate

Attack 13

1030g/ binding
FR Pro 2 Toe
NX FR Heel
17mm stand height

Look Pivot 14

180 degree multi direction release (your ACLs say thank you)
Nearly Neutral Stack height (18mm toe and 19mm heel)
Toe - Full Action GW Teflon
Weight 1115/binding
Shorter mounting zone
roll coupling boot to binding interface
high level of vertical and horizontal elastic travel (quck recentering prior to release to reduce pre release)

Overall I think you made a great choice.

Marker Griffon 13 - Rec weight range is 80 - 265 lbs
Look Pivot 14 rec weight range is 160 - 220 lbs
Tyrolia Attack 13 weight range is 65 - 240 lbs

Since I how you're a BIG guy, I think they did a great job of putting you into the 13 Griffons vs pushing you into the Tyrolia or upselling you into the Look Pivot 15s which is where you'd need to be on that manufacturer for me to feel comfortable w you riding them given your height and weight. Still confused about the width of the ski comment though jaja.

Thanks. Either way looks like I'm in a good setup. All that being said, I'm no longer a JR Ewing bowling ball rolling down the slopes. I've lost 40lbs in the last year so hoping the inertia is a little easier to stop. We shall see.

I'm at 5'10 210 right meow and the ski pants are damn near falling off me. Going for that DOPE look I suppose. Thank god for suspenders.

Pumped for some new sticks. I've been wanting some wider skis and lighter setup for awhile. I bet these feel like featherweights compared to what I've been on. The shipping box said it weighed 11 lbs TOTAL.

You should get the base structured once you receive them. Structure is like the tread on your tires. You don't want to drive on bald treads and same goes w skiing. You want some structure to break up the suction of the water to your base PTEX. Personally, I can't ski factory structure.

A more aggressive structure has more depth/width.
A shallower, tighter structure is less aggressive.
Coarser structures are harder to turn because they make the ski want to track more.

Cold/Dry Conditions: Use a fine structure that you can see but not feel with your fingers. This helps hold water under the ski for better glide.

Warm/Wet Conditions: A coarser structure that you can feel under your fingers works best here because it helps move water away from the base and reduces suction.

If your kids race, one thing to remember is chemically treated courses often ski drier/harder than the ambient temp.

Is that something I can learn on YouTube? Kidding.

Where would I even do something like that? Timing permitted, I'm just hoping to get my DIN set up and boots in these suckers so that we're ready to go Sunday AM.

Will want to ski a few days before I really feel anything.
Bayou City

AYYY Congrats. You will EASILY be able to tell a difference. I went from 218 one offseason t o160 inseason one year and it's night and day. Not just inertia but control and precision and confidence. Hella congrats man.

If you need new pants lmk.

Also, DONT freak out the first time you crash your bases. **** happens and it will happen and as long as it's not a total core shot or sidewall blow out, you can fix it. Youll be be shocked at what some of these ski surgeons can fix. First day I took out my new Crows I put a 30 CM 2-3 mm run directly down the center from tow to waist. I wanted to cry but a little Ptex and elbow grease and you'd never know it wad there if you didn't know it was there.

Also be weary on how much you base grind those bad boys. A lot of people try to solve every issue with sending the ski through a grinder or grinding and every time you do you shave the life of your ladies. Base grind when necessary but don't go crazy or you'll wear through the bases.

Oh yeah and the first day when you go out, start with some stuff that's easy to get a feel for the length, the weight, the balance, the edges, and the overall control. Then start to dip your toe slowly into the "this is epic" pool. Dont go full epic first run just like you Never go full ******. Itll be hard to resist. Believe me.

And make them slightly more vulnerable to a core shot with each fine layer removed, though we're talking tiny thicknesses I suppose. I was surprised when I found out how thin the bases actually typically are.
Bayou City
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Are they sending them mounted? I've always wanted the boot when I'm setting up. Those guys have like every boot known to man though so as long as they know what you're on, I think they can pull stock to mount.

If so, all you gotta do is adjust the din at the toe and heel. Might need to adjust the toe height. Thats SUPER EASY. YouTube University is easy for that one. If you need your DIN calculated, I can help or you can use an online calculator.

If not, then the same place that mounts the binding can likely structure the base.
