Just booked mine too check in march 25 - check out april 8. In a few weeks Ill cancel the March 25-april 6. Park ranger suggested to do it that way too; otherwise it would be sold out if you waited until Nov 7 to book.

My kids were pumped to see the ring of fire 2 weeks ago in Corpus. I was in Colorado so I missed it!

I just did the same but was told that I will need to check with the park ahead of time and get permission to stay in past my checkout time on the 8th. I got a shelter for my uppity wife so I am all set thanks to this thread. I just really hope that they don't kick us out. I'm extremely excited.

Texags comes through in the clutch again.

Check out is at noon I imagine you can just get to a bench/table for an hour. As long as you vacate your campsite I can't see how they would kick you out ! What if you're on a hike!

I thought that was an odd statement as well but it is what they said due to the eclipse. I have a hard time believing they would even be able to track me down anyways. I plan on taking the advice anyways.
I might extend my campsite one more day, even though I won't stay the night. Be nice to at a minimum, have guaranteed parking and protection from any overzealous rangers!

Yea she told me I couldn't extend it until the 9th for another day which I dont really get but thatis my plan as well.

Well, there's an old wives tale about "pushing" that delivery date up.

Family has a ranch near llano we can stay at. Is it feasible to figure out where the peak path will be and just pull off a rural highway? Some reports make it sound like the crowds will be crazy.

Here's a map of the hill country around Austin.

Everywhere inside the red lines will have totality. At the blue line you will get ~5 min of totality and closer to the edges will be around 1 min.

Link to the interactive map:
https://eclipse2024.org/eclipse_cities/statemap.html

Our family has a place on LBJ so we will be staying there for the weekend and watching from the dock. Estimated about 4.5 min of totality at our location.

I don't mean to throw a wrench in everyone's plans but be flexible and keep an eye on the forecast. In 2017 my wife and I enjoyed about 45 seconds of totality from our front yard at our old house in upstate South Carolina. It was a gorgeous blue sky day. However much of the eastern seaboard booked it for Charleston to catch the last bit of the eclipse over land. But as luck would have it, Charleston was overcast that day.

Have to remind folks soon that it is "cedar season" - perhaps it will scare a few people off.

I think worst case, they kick us out and we'll watch the eclipse on the side of the road in Leakey.

I checked this morning and everything looks like it's booked. There may a random one off that pops up on the 9th, but the reason you have to wait is because of the 5 month release date. Since we all kind of booked ours on a loophole of booking a 2 week block. They're going to get a ton of people releasing their march 25-april 6 sites in a few weeks lol.

If some overzealous ranger tries to kick you out of the park, just pay the day entry fee. They will be too busy will all the day visitors to mess with you, as long as you are out of your site.

I haven't released my march 25-april 6 dates yet. Plan on doing it next week. Anybody released theirs yet, and did they give you any grief?

Happy New Year Ags! Time to start gearing up for 4/8/24! A fellow eclipse chaser and I have started a podcast about total solar eclipses. We have experts and newbies alike talking totality. Clear Skies!

We're almost dead center of the path in the hill country. How much do you think I could rent out my little guest cabin for?

Not looking forward to this mess.

A few years back hotels in southern IL were going for $600 a room. Hampton Inn.

Probably name your price and someone would rent it.

I am convinced the Hill Country will be overwhelmed with people on April 8. 4 minutes and 30 seconds of totality is insane. To put that in perspective, we experienced only 92 seconds of totality during the last total eclipse in August 2017 (our home in Tennessee was right in the middle of the path). And I must say, you'll never experience the rush of complete darkness and the view of the corona at 1:30 in the afternoon.

Airfare, hotels, and cars are ridiculously high.

I've been told Kerrville is going to be the Weather Channel's ground zero.

And don't wait till the last minute to get your eclipse sunglasses. I picked some up recently online. About $30 bucks for 25. As flimsy as they are, they work, having used them in 2017.

This is a once in a lifetime moment imo.

Agree... debating on just going out on Lake Travis and anchoring somewhere.

There should still be limited boat traffic since public ramps are closed.

We've got a place in Junction that we will be going to for this event, our neighbor said the town is projecting at least 40,000 visitors. I'm just hoping the traffic won't be too insane coming back since our son will have school the next day. (He is actually off the Monday of the eclipse)

My godmother has a house in Fredericksburg and she told me over the holidays that they've been told to expect up to 1 million visitors coming to the area for the event. They were told to stock up on food and gas weeks before it is supposed to start. Ive been there when it's busy, I have no desire to be there when it's that packed.

I work for a state agency. We are being told to prepare for an additional 100,000 people in Gillespie county for that entire week. Not sure how that's even possible, but if it comes to fruition it will make me a bit nervous. You are talking major congestion, heb emptied, medical facilities overloaded, cell networks clogged up etc.

I am basically going to prep for what would be a week long winter storm. Hopefully there are no serious weather events that week. It has the potential to turn into a total CF if so.

Over a million people are expected in the HC area needing accommodations. Be careful.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
We have a place near Leakey less than 2 miles from centerline. Will be cool We plan to go up Thursday before and hope its not that bad with traffic, etc. Once there, all is good. But could see a usual 4 trip turn into 10 hours or more.

Have 10 acres, so selling camping spots for $1000/each.

Joking. But I'm sure some people will try it.

What the heck are all those people going to do if it's raining that day/ time? Or really overcast and cloudy? I remember looking at the last solar eclipse in the Houston area in August 2017 with special glasses a friend had bought. Was no big deal to me.
wessimo
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The diehard eclipse chasers will have plans A, B, C, etc. and will follow forecasts and find clear skies. Everyone else will notice it get dark even if they can't see the sun through the clouds.

Your 2017 experience wasn't impressive because you weren't in the path of totality.

My mom is in Kerrville and she keeps telling me the town has been talking about for an awhile now. We are in Georgetown, so think we will we stay here and still be able to see it.
