Thanks for the reminder of this. I'm putting it on my schedule so I remember not to send any employees to Fredericksburg, Kerrville, or Boerne that day.

What the heck are all those people going to do if it's raining that day/ time? Or really overcast and cloudy? I remember looking at the last solar eclipse in the Houston area in August 2017 with special glasses a friend had bought. Was no big deal to me.

Wasn't a big deal in Houston, nor will it be on 4/8/24. You wouldn't even have known it was happening in Houston 2017 unless someone told you. That Sun was only 70% eclipsed.

Totality is 100% or nothing… 99% is not total. 99% is like driving past an opera marquee and saying you saw the opera… in both cases, you missed the event. If it's cloudy, have a plan B or just enjoy the darkness. It gets dark so fast in the last few minutes that you WILL get a chill, most likely an instinctive drive to seek cover or flee. Primal.

Get into the path of totality… 100%.
Clear skies!

This may be old news, just passing along what I heard …TXDOT is planning for "hurricane Rita-like" traffic around the event. Hotels along 35 and 45 corridors are booked to capacity, and temporary fuel/food shortages are being considered a real possibility.

Didnt realize the population surge was expected to be as high as the projections I heard during our emergency mgmt meeting.

If nothing else, it's a good opportunity to break out the gear, get some good inventories and make sure you're ready.

Good luck. I am betting it will be a complete cluster all afternoon and into late night.

I'm debating going to my parents house in Killeen for the eclipse. Live in Buda, so just outside the 100% totality zone.

I work remotely that day anyways

Latest GFS cloud forecast isn't looking positive, but still too far out for confidence in the models.

My parents retired and built a house out in Round Mountain (about 10 miles south of Marble Falls). They're in the almost perfect location to get max totality. They have 11 acres out there and I can't tell you how many friends have reached out offering several hundred bucks just to come out and camp on their property the night before so they can see it. My Dad is old school (class of '70) and wants no part of random people coming out and camping on his property. He's going to smoke some BBQ and have family and a few friends out to their place, but he said demand out their way is crazy for this event.
Can confirm. It's going to be lit. I'm hunkering down.

We were in Fredericksburg this past weekend and talked to our shuttle driver about that weekend. None of the wine shuttles will run Friday or Saturday due to the expected traffic. They can't guarantee their pickup and drop off times. Extra helipads have been secured and he said that they have been told to expect 100,000 on the low end and 500,000 on the high end.

He knows of landowners that are renting primitive campsites in their pastures for $300/night with a 3 night minimum.

His wife has a B&B that has been reserved for that weekend for at least two years. I bet the food and drink prices will be ridiculous as well.

We live in B/CS and I found out yesterday that I will be starting a new job that day. I am disappointed that I will not get to see it with my boys (they are homeschooled) even though we are out of the main viewing line.

hope those folks don't get stuck in the mud from all that rain and severe weather headed to the Hill Country that weekend

Looking like I can't make it. Bummed. I had called dibs on the family lake house that is worthless. It's a 3/2.5 on 25 acres. I bet I could rent that out for a lot.

I can't actually get the extended family to rent it. It's on LBJ in Kingsland.

We are talking about revising our travel plan for Monday. We're thinking about leaving Junction around 11 and hoping to make it to the other side of Fredericksburg and Johnson City for the actual totality time. Then continuing on to College Station. We're hoping that gives us a two hour head start and maybe gets us on the right side of traffic until we hit Austin…. Maybe???

Heads up - DPS is preparing for gridlock on pretty much all major highways in the path as well as I-20 from Weatherford to Canton and I-35 from Denton to Austin. Fuel trucks will be staged to make sure emergency vehicles can get fuel to respond. Everyone else fend for themselves. DPS is advising to stay home and avoid travel on April 8.

That sounds like wishful thinking. You may be underestimating how many people will be out and about, and how many will be driving early. I don't know that it's possible to get "on the right side" of traffic for something like this. Fill the tank, get in line, and bring bags and bags of patience.

I hope I'm wrong.

I know…. We are just trying our best to get back for our son's 7:30 baseball game. I know it's wishful thinking and I'm sure we will be ready to kill each other by the time we actually do make it back. I plan on telling coach not to count on us.

Maybe we can find some decent backroads.

That's going to be my strategy. Wait as long as I can Monday evening, and take backroads with a full tank of gas. Pray for the best, and plan on it being SSSLLLOOOWWW is what I'm telling my fam.

Absolute BS. Reminds me of Y2K.

You can still get a hotel room in Killeen and in Temple for both Sunday night and Monday night. my cousin is a Williamson County sheriff cop and he said they aren't planning for anything crazy though that is a little south of us.

We have a baseball tournament in Houston that weekend and a bunch of mothers are freaking out. Same mothers that were freaking out about Covid four years ago.

Shut up. We are going to Houston and driving back Sunday.

Edit for clarity. Not saying you are lying, just saying what you heard is a bunch of crapola.

I actually think this is true. I did the 2017 one and it was less traffic than an Aggie game.

Just retired. Got a free cruise offer out of LA to go through the Panama Canal.

Ship schedule changed to Lolly gag around the South American coast to view the entire eclipse. The boat is giving out solar eclipse glasses.

Guess that makes me a lolly gagger.
