I got into some bucks tonight, but no luck. Stalked in on a group of 3, with one really nice buck. He was standing feeding, and I could just see him if I was standing, but no shot off my sticks and no rest. Probably a little too far for off-hand, so I didn't chance it. I was trying to slip to my left slightly and find an angle when they decided to start moving. Over the ridge and off the never never land. He was a really nice 4x4, full velvet.

Had a slam-dunk shot on small buck, but I let him walk. Got on another buck at dark, that was REALLY tall, but very narrow and fairly short. Probably a younger deer. Still would have smoked him if I could. Ended up about 25 yards from him in thick oak brush. No shot, except between the eyes...

Had 3 bucks come by me last night. Someone or something had pushed them, as they were moving at a good clip. I got positioned and set up, and they had gone much faster down the hill than I anticipated. Only caught the biggest one as he was just stepping out of the opening @ 100 yards. No clean shot. Passed on the rag horn behind him. Never saw the 3rd till they got downwind if me, and were bunny hopping across the open range to private land.

Saw a couple others deer sneaking though the oak brush with me. Everything seemed edgy and stirred up- the woods just were not settled, you know what I mean?

I found a group of does on the way back just before dark, so I sat up on them hoping a buck I had seen sniffing around them the day before would drop by. No luck. I was able to crawl to 40 yards, and get set up. So at lest got to work on my short game. All of a sudden, they spooked and busted, almost in my lap. No idea what happens- but I'm not very far from my Jeep at this point.

I get down there, and there is a Polaris parked right next to my Jeep, and someone has clearly walked in where I am hunting. I parked at the gate to an old logging road that leads to some tight quarters. Across the road is VAST amount of huntable land. Why he would park right next to me and come into where I clearly am is beyond me. I'm at my Jeep taking stuff off, and I can hear someone huffing and crashing though the oak brush above. As soon as I close my door, they stop. Obviously didn't want to come down while i was still there. I waited a few minutes, then drove off. I could see a his headlamp come on as I left.

Is what it is. Part of public lands, I guess. Been a crazy year in that regard. But I'm hearing the same type of crap from people who are 6-8 miles back in. So I don't know what to do. Gonna have to buy me some property here, I guess. Anyone got a couple mil and want to go in?

Well, I dropped by the bow shop this morning to get some help tuning for Ramcat broadheads.... and I walked out with an entire new bow and setup.

I've been wanting a new one for a while now, but went ahead and pulled the trigger. I shot the Bowtech Realm, Mathews Triax, and PSE Evolve. Of the three, the Realm fit and felt the best, so that's what I got.

I also got a new rest (Ripcord MAX), sight (Black Gold Ascent Verdict Assault), and arrows (Gold Tip Velocity XT 300s, 50 gr aluminum insert, ~445 gr total weight).

What shop? I'm always interested in where the good ones are.

It was Hoffy's Archery in Lampasas. The pro there, Aaron Barton, is a great guy, very helpful, and really knows his stuff. I spent 4 hours in there with him and another employee, Zane. Aaron talked me through the tuning issues on my old bow, then setup and let me shoot a new few bows, helped me with some form and draw issues, and answered lots of questions I have had but haven't had anyone to answer. Then, once I picked a bow, they did the entire set up, made sure I was sighted in for 20 yards, helped me pick the right sight tape, cut and made arrows, etc. Yes, all of this is stuff you would expect a shop that is selling you a $1000 bow to do, but these guys just did it really well. They were also very welcoming and fun to talk with while I was waiting.

It's about a 40 minute drive from my house, but I will take my archery business there every time.
