Garrett knows his stuff. A couple guys here swear by those Phelps purple signature calls. I haven't had the pleasure yet

I got a REEL Elk call last year, and have been loving it for a cow call. It plays some really sweet cow music, especially in close quarters. I've never had anything that can come close to the variety of tones and range of volume.

The AMP gray is my favorite and there's one called "the beast" that I can get great growls and high pitched bugles out of. I ordered a few others from Phelps that I can't really recall. One was pink I believe. Bat bugle tube is one of Cory Jacobson's products. The diaphragms with the "domes" don't fit my mouth very well. I'll carry a couple bite and blow calls as well. Never bugled one in but I've cow called a bull in before. Watching a lot of calling strategy vids these days.

I got a subscription for a few months when I started chasing elk. Really helped me understand calling, and I believe expedited my learning curve. He has some really interesting strategies and tactics- and does a great job explaining in his videos. A good resource, but not free. I didn't mind supporting him for a bit, obvious a lot of effort went into it. I don't quite agree with everything he does, but he gave me some great principles that I still use to this day, like the "doorway" principle.

It's worth a look if you like calling vids.

Have an elk101 sub with Jacobson. Haven't utilized it as much as I should, but I'm on it more and more now

I've had Roe Hunting Resources for about 3 years now. It's great stuff and Chris seems like a great guy. Certified elk nut. His strategy is a little different than Corey's. Lot more cow calling.

I saw him speak at the sportsmens expo in Denver a couple years ago. PETA (or some other group of idiots) showed up and protested him....security got them out pretty quick and I guess joke was on them since they had to buy a ticket to get in

Still can't believe I dropped that kinda coin on a pack, but it's worth every penny. Could not be happier. Amazing performance, fit and feel.

I added 2 pouches and the dry load cell bag plus a hydro holster.

I've been packing 51 pounds around with what used to feel like 30-35 in my old Kelty. I let the owner of the bow shop I use try it on with 48 pounds the other day. He kept asking me "how many pounds are in this thing"? The owner of SG is a hard core sheep hunter and the story goes that he personally designed this pack with his own style in mind. Durability will be the only question over time but I don't see any design issues that concern me on that front. 100% satisfied.

Episode 260 of The Rich Outdoors with Paul "Elk Nut" Medel is a must listen. Paul and his son have killed 61 bulls over the last 30 some odd years and I think 90% have been with archery gear. He's a little squirrely but his results are pretty amazing. Dam, I'm ready.

60 yards. Third arrow was right on top of it, but blew through the target and I lost it. ****.

Went back to offset. 556 grains. With broadheads it looks like I'll only have clearance at 85 yards...but I'll get that dialed for sure and this week.

Glad to see everyone getting geared up and getting in their pre-season wokouts...helps get the juices flowing at 5am for cardio.

We drew (if you can call such high tag odds a true draw) our muley back up plan in Wyoming, Region W (unit 82,100) for general season (October 1 - 6)

Anyone hunted that south central Wyoming area?

We have talked to a few people so far but always looking for general pointers/what not spend time on. General season seems like a zoo the closer you get the Medicine Bow National Forest in 82 but as is the case with general season for non-residents. Don't have much experience hunting the high desert terrain west of the NF so figured I would ask the board.

All is not lost....headed up for the week and then leaving to head to New Mexico for an elk hunt Oct. 6-10. Not complaining with a 2 month old at home and figuring I would be a light season for me (skipped an early season CO archery muley hunt with my normal group).

Thanks and can't wait to see the trip notes and harvest pictures for everyone else.

I have no idea how, but last Thursday I noticed the McMillan Edge Tech stock on my mountain rifle had cracked and split near the recoil pad. Of course McMillan said to send it to them and they would repair it. But I leave for Canada in 6 weeks and not only do I need the rifle for that hunt, but I need to be shooting it!

In a state of semi buzzed panic, I bought a Barrett Fieldcraft from Bud's Gun Shop around 11 am on Friday. Not only was the Fieldcraft delivered to my local FFL this afternoon (Monday) but they also accepted a $300 off price match during check-out. (Good job Bud.)

So I've got another rifle to play with and tune-up while waiting on McMillan. And in the near future I may have a lightweight 30-06 for sale.

I've already got my leftover tag in hand bro.

I've got several I'm trying for.

I've got one too.... And I'll be doing OTC archery too.

But, there's a few tags I want to fill in the gaps. Lot of weekends between Aug and Nov...

There are several archery deer unit with tags I'm interested in. There are 10 tags listed in the unit I applied to as a second choice. Maybe there have been a lot of tags turned in due to the fires? In any case, I can't get up there this year.

The reason for so many tags on the list this year is they added in all the tags people turned in (like you said). Typically those come out at a later date on the "reissue list" compared to the normal leftover list. I think historically they didn't get added in until all the OTC stuff went on sale (few days later)...I have a friend who was a little perturbed it shook out this way with the new system.

There's quite a few really good tags on there if you know where to look....I'm imagining a madhouse at 9am online.

It's the best mule deer hunting/stalking book I've ever read. I got within 35 yards of a mature 180 class Muley last year, stalking 250 yards over 4 hours. I never would have tried it or even though it was possible before reading that book.

I actually had both tags in my cart. Made it to the payment page. Elk tag sold out. In the time it took me to remove the elk tag from my cart the deer tag I wanted sold out. Fun....fingers crossed more people turn stuff back in.

Agreed. Very good book with great insight. I try and read a couple books again this time of year as the stories/lessons/tactics seem to stick better.

Another is "The Edge" by David Long and Mike Duplan. Great resource on strategy and tactics.

Crashed like crazy for me too. Got a late doe antelope tag in 137/138/144. Everything else I had my eyes on is sold out now though.

I've had my eye on those Commanche NG units for antelope. Relatively close drive and relatively easy to draw tag. You'll have to report back your findings on this one please.
