Well lets get this thread back on track.... This was my first tarpon on the fly and I caught it on my honeymoon in Belize last year. My wife swears that I was more excited about catching a tarpon than the honeymoon...I won't post the answer on here but i've always wanted to catch a tarpon on my fly rod!!

Centerpole, I took a moment to think of an admirable response to your post and I have come up with nothing. Thus I will STFU, sorry for derailing the thread, sorry for offending anyone, sorry for crapping on the parade etc.

Don't STFU; just join in the discussion, or don't. I for one would rather you did; but if catch-and-release fishing isn't' for you then probably tarpon fishing isn't for you. There's no crime in that, but you could have said it without all the asterisks.

This.

I appreciate the apology. The initial posts Big Ben made just really rubbed me the wrong way. As CP90 said most of the guys on here put a lot of time, effort, and not a small amount of money into chasing these fish. And doing it for the thrill of seeing the tarpon eat and the fight.

Your posts came off as the equivalent of a 2%'Er who says "I love Aggie football but only when they win, otherwise it's not worth my time."

The rush of seeing a prehistoric beast of molten silver turn and follow your fly and then inhale it a split second before a bomb goes off in the water and all hell breaks loose is a massive high.

You don't have to get it. But if you want to try and figure it out you're welcome on my boat. Just don't crap on other people's joy.

Back to the subject. My buddies told me they were rolling all over the SPI jetties as they headed out off shore on Saturday. Saturday was zero wind for most of the morning.

I have a buddy who fishes them all the time down here. Maybe one day I'll rank high enough for an invite.

Full report on the Key West fishing- 2.5 days on the flats and one offshore.

Monday was beach/pool time and the Duval Crawl. Your's truly was in fine form. Somehow I got pulled up on stage at a great bar called Irish Kevin's to partake in a contest to see who could down a pint of Guinness the fastest. I was about 2 sheets to the wind at this point and then the dude running the contest decides to torpedo my pint with about 2 shots worth of Jameson- whoa nelly this is gonna hurt. Anyway, I posted a respectable time of 6.4 seconds but some 22-year old kid from University of Florida, who didn't have his Guinness torpedoed downs his in about 3.5 seconds. He's still competing on the regular tour, I've evidently moved on the to the "masters" division.

Some non-fly fishing action in the interim as I split a trip with a buddy and he was on the bow when he took this permit on a live crab out in the Marquesas (he doesn't fly fish but I'm working on converting him). Then we took the ladies offshore Thursday and got some nice mahi (plus feeding tarpon at the docks) but Friday & Saturday I went out with Capt. John O'Hearn. John is a well known guide down there and is the dude running the boat/poling in this video: https://vimeo.com/83816888

Friday I took Mrs. Finn along. She didn't really want to fish but wanted to see what all the fuss was about. To her credit she was a total trooper. It was super calm and hot. We killed about 3/4 of a case of water and 6 32oz bottles of Gatorade.

We left the ramp at 6:30 Friday morning and headed to some flats where he'd been seeing tarpon and were looking for rollers as the sun came up. He said this time of year most of the big girls have moved on but there are still plenty of poon in the 40-70# class. Throwing my 10wt and little tiny flies (for tarpon anyway) on size 2 hooks. John said he's a stickler for using IFGA leaders. Which means a 16# class tippet of at least 15" and bite tippet of no more than 12". He's so hard core about it he's got 2 little marks tattooed on one shin (that he did himself with a fish hook and India ink) to mark the proper length for the bite tippet.

Anyway we head into the back country where we're looking for rollers until the sun gets high enough to sight-fish them. We pole up to where we see some rolling and I make a cast at a roll, strip, strip, BAM! And damnit, she's gone. Reel it in and there's the telltale curlicue at the end of the bite tippet- the knot failed. And it was the guide who tied it on. He was apologetic and was OK with me busting his balls over it the rest of the day.

We see one other big tarpon (easily a 100# fish) in the back country flats but I rushed my first shot and was off-line as the fish was slowly moving away and when I lifted my fly off the water to make a second shot the sound spooked her and she took off. Soon the back country flats quiet down as the sun gets higher and it's too hot on the flats so we move oceanside on the white sands out in front of Ballast Key (about 15mi west of Key West https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ballast+Key,+Florida+33040/@24.520875,-81.9646565,1816m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x88d1cf37fbb9bbbf:0xee8b8e2d37e7fe71).

Here we found a ton of smaller tarpon up to about 50#.

I got 3 more to eat but each one of them either broke me off on the hookset or I hit bone and they spit the hook. I had several more flat out refusals and a couple where the dang needlefish beat a tarpon to the fly.

Saturday morning it was just me on the skiff and it was not nearly as calm and we had crap light but we found the tarpon again working bait balls out on the white sand in front of Ballast Key.

So about 8:45 Saturday morning after getting some refusals John says, "there she is, 1 o'clock 40 feet out, 2 of 'em coming right at you" (I had been looking the other direction and they came onto the white sand off a darker bottom) and I make a snap-shot cast strip, strip, SHE ATE IT! And then all hell breaks loose. She's jumping and cartwheeling and stripping drag. After about a 10 minute fight we bring her alongside the skiff, it's about a 45# poon and John grabs the leader. My first official tarpon catch. But, as he's about to go from the leader to grab the mouth for some pics, out pops the fly and she's gone. WOW! What a rush.

The bite tippet is shredded so we tie on a new one and wait. I got another one to eat but she must have gotten the tippet down into the corner of her mouth because she bit through 50# bite tippet like a pair of scissors. Then we had some weather come up and we had to wait it out.

Finally, about 12:30 we're sitting in in almost the exact same spot as the first fish and I'm sitting down on the casting platform having a drink when John says, "there she is, 3 o'clock, 30 feet out, heading to the back of the boat" I throw my Gatorade into the cockpit and rush out a short backhand cast that lands 6' in front of the poon. A couple strips across her vision and she turns to follow and inhales the fly not 15' from the skiff. I come tight and rather than jumping she heads for the bottom and runs out to sea. She ran through all kinds of sargassum patches, tried to wrap me around a lobster trap buoy, and just ran. After about 20 minutes we get her alongside the boat and John grabs the leader when she decides to make another dive and CRACK! she snaps my Scott Tidal 10wt at the first ferrule above the handle. We try to hand-line her up but the tippet pops and she swims off. Oh well, she was an official catch and went about 70#. I ain't even mad about the rod.

At this point I decide I should go ahead and close on a high note and we head back in for celebratory beers for the first 2 tarpon I've officially landed even though I don't have pics- I have the memories.

Alright! Nice report and pics, Finn. Back on track... I flew over Marquesas Keys on the way to Dry Tortugas and wondered about the fishing there. That permit is super cool. Congrats on the tarpon! Who's next????

TxAg-010; I should have mentioned this earlier - but that is a really good picture. The fish really cooperated and posed like a champ for you. Fly in the mouth, all zipped up, and ready to rocket off as soon it hits the water. Well done and congratulations! Belated congratulations on the honeymoon and we won't comment on the honeymoon vs. fly caught tarpon.

There's been a couple threads with talk of surf fishing and jetty fishing around Port A. I hope someone can bring us a good tarpon story soon.

I've been trying real hard to get another scratch on the big board. I went to my favorite tarpon spot this morning and went 0/0. Saw a few small rollers, but no bites. I stopped at a new spot on the way home and had a bit more luck...0/3!

I'm not even mad at all of the disconnections. I'm elated just to get tight on these junior tarpon. Of course, catching would be 1000x better. I lost a small snook after a short fight as well, so I think the problem is my strip set. Seems like there's always slack or stretch resulting in less power. Is it wrong to re-set the hook if the first set is weak? Also, I might be pulling the hooks out trying to horse these 2 footers in too fast.

Since I didn't catch a tarpon, here's a pic of the resident nurse shark. I've seen him flip rocks/coral with his head. I might have to drop a shrimp pattern on him one day before one of the gators finds him in the shallows.

Howdy tarpon addicts. My handle is salt of the water and I'm a fledgling fly flinger, but I've got the bug bad so I guess you could say I'm an addict too.

Prior to this year my only fly experience was a rig I devised when I was in gradeschool: cane pole with 15 ft of mono and kite string salmon egg hook fly I tied. I used to terrorize some bluegill and rio grande cichlids back in the day.

Fast forward about 15 years. I picked up this gheenoe,http://imgur.com/5RxKjsc and the guy I bought it from gave me a 5 weight. Did some casting practice in the yard and decided to dive in with an 8 weight for the salt. This last weekend I convinced this redfish to eat this spoon fly I made. http://i.imgur.com/SwFen9J.jpg I'm hooked.

For Labor Day I'll be visiting some family in Harlingen. I'm tempted to head down to the jetties at Isla Blanca park for a quick early morning or late evening trip to try and throw flies at the tarpon/snook I've seen there in the past. Here's some of my thoughts/questions, I really have no clue here so any and all suggestions you guys can offer are welcome.

What are the odds of me hooking into something that will spool me on the 8 weight? I've only gotten one use out of my fly line so far, so I'd rather not have to buy new line so soon again.

I've got 20 lb dacron backing (unknown length), scientific angler redfish wf8f line, and some 16lb tapered leaders. Should I tie up a leader with a lighter section so I can just break that off if I hook up into something that has me outgunned? I'm thinking a leader along the lines of 3ft 60lb, 1.5ft 30lb, 1.5ft 12lb, then a 1ft 60lb bite leader.

My line is a floating line. My tying skills are still pretty limited so I've been practicing with clousers. Will clousers with heavy lead eyes get deep enough to be effective?

Line control on the rocks? Belly basket? Carry a 5 gal bucket?

I know the ideal scenario would be to go ahead and get a 10 or 12 wt but my fishing budget is already blown for the year, so I've got to work with what I've got.

Welcome aboard Salt! Man you're all set up! I personally haven't fished the rocks but your plan seems like a sound one. I don't think you'd have any trouble breaking off @ a 12#. It'll be tough to bring a tarpon or big Jack of any size to hand from the rocks on 12 but there should still be action. I saw some boats around the jetties this weekend and I understand there are some big reds; but they were dredging the bottom to catch them. With floating line we are going to need them to come up in the water column. I think it would be helpful to have something to drop that slack in - most of that stuff looks like marginal footing when you're out there on the edge!

There was a lot of action around the jetties this past weekend. Here is CPjr ripping a 10wt through some smacks -

The ride out on Saturday was picture perfect -

And sometime during the week I got this nasty slime on the side of the little Mav's rub rail. Now what in the heck could possibly be that slimy???

Love that Port Mansfield sunrise! Unfortunately I haven't seen one of those in a few years.

I wouldn't know because I haven't caught one (yet!) but do tarpon slime things up like the ladyfish?

Any thoughts on fly selection? Will chart/white clousers give me a decent shot at tarpon, or should I be leaning towards a more specific tarpon pattern (what are the preferred tarpon patterns)? Anything simple enough that a novice could tie them up before the weekend?

Any issues with the smacks biting off your leader? I guess I can just use a couple inches of wire at the end instead of the heavier mono. Clousers heavy on the crystal flash seem like they would be smack candy.
Centerpole90
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Yes, tarpon are pretty darn slimy. They will slime up your line, your boat, your hands, everything they touch just like ladyfish and when they are lifted out of the water they will then crap buckets of ladyfish-like poo all over everything. I am convinced that THIS is behind the movement to keep fish in the water for pictures as much as protecting the fish.

Most folks casting for tarpon are throwing tarpon bunnies or something similar in either red/white or purple/black. They're easy to tie, here is a good tutorial on tying the Tarpon Bunny.

quote:

Smacks will fray your leader. If you're fishing a 50# or more bite tippet they may not chomp clean through but they'll fray it up and then when your big tarpon hits it's already weakened. With your 8 weight though, what you're really wanting to do is jump and break off anyway so I wouldn't let it worry you too much. I agree that some clouser with crystal flash ripped through the water would be fun.

If you are still planning on coming down shoot me an email to my username @yahoo.com . I'm not far from Harlingen and I'd hook you up with few flies to feed the tarpon before you take off for the rocks. There has been some very generous sharing of info, files, and good will on this thread and I'd love to keep it going.

I've been eyeing those new little efi zukes. Right at 100 lbs for a 20 hp 4 stroke is impressive. That's getting the weight low enough to really compete with the old 2 strokes on the weight sensitive micros.

So, on boats that light/small does the weight of the fisherman drastically change the handling or fishability. If you put myself and my brother in it the weight doubles.

Are they designed with the weight of the fishermen in mind? Absolutely. Does the weight of the fisherman effect the holeshot, draft, and overall performance? Absolutely.

I know with my skiff Inhave had to change places with my accompanying angler at times to better balance the boat and achieve the draft we wanted. Sometimes it's me that adds more ballast, sometimes it's someone else. Handling on a plane is pretty uniform, but on the pole you can certainly tell the difference between two big 'Ol boys or two skinny kids or a combination thereof.

Keep it up and next time I see you I will hide used greasy whataburger wrappers in your truck so you have smell the greatness that you can't have.

According to the website that boat sans motor and trailer is only 378lbs, so any 2 men over the age of 15 should about double its weight.

Thanks CP, only poling skiff I have been in was an East Cape Fury, which is a bigger boat than the Glide.

Assuming 16' by 4' in the water 600 lbs (no people) will draft 1.5". 1100 lbs (2 250 lb guys) draft is about 3.5". East cape isn't joking when they advertise their draft is stupid skinny.

My gheenoe handles just like CP described, except for the on plane part. With only 8 hp, proper weight distribution will determine whether or not you even get on plane.

don't put too much stock in their draft numbers. all manufacturers fudge them. my guess on the true floating draft for a boat like that is about 4" - 5" with the boat empty.

course i could be proven wrong if it ever shows on the coast
