I'm an ophthalmologist and a couple years ago, I decided if Johnny Manziel was "Johnny Football" then I was gonna be "Teddy Eyeballs" and John O'Hearn, Keys guide, started calling me just Eyebalz. lol. I'm like way stricken with this disease, fished the Golden Fly Tournament this year with another guide, Drew Delashmit.

Awesome. John was telling me about you today eyebalz.

BKCLARK originally gave me the rec for O'Hearn. And I was telling O'Hearn about a cabal of Aggies obsessed with catching tarpon on the fly.

I'm bummed I couldn't get pics but it was a little sporty out there today for my fat ass in John's little Dolphin Super Skiff.

The first fish spit the fly when John went to go from the leader to the mouth. The 70# fish made one last dive when John went to grab it and that's when my rod snapped at the first ferrule. We tried to hand like her back up and the tippet broke.

Getting pics is always nice, but once you've caught a few and have some pics, breaking them off becomes a very common way of ending the fight. Does suck to break your rod and then lose fish so close to the boat. Sounds like y'all were fishing bait balls out west on the ocean and white sand. Very cool stuff. John is super awesome. Glad you had good fishing. August can be a tough time to fish the lower keys.

Exactly right. Working bait balls out off Ballast Key and a little west.

These are the first tarpon I've landed.

I did get some good pics of the permit my buddy landed earlier this week on a live crab and some great shots when we took the wimmenz off shore on Thursday. I'll post them when I get home.

It all began with South Padre Reds with Eric Glass, then Belize, Casa Blanca, and Andros, to finally end up in the Keys where you will find the ultimate and final test--big permit and giant migratory tarpon on the flats. Been doing this for 15 years and have learned a lot along the way. I don't pretend to know everything about the sport as no one should, but I'm happy to share what I do know.

Also, I come from a family full of Ags and can't wait for football season to start. Gig 'Em!

I finally got on the big board tonight! This is the biggest of the 2 that I lucked into. Another got away, but he earned his escape. I am busting at the seams!

You're the one who specifically came on a thread full of guys who get extremely excited about targeting a specific fish in a specific way to crap on it because you can't eat a fish that was swimming when your granddaddy was still in short pants.

Not having to kill the animal to enjoy the experience is the beauty in fishing. Anyone can sit in a wooden box and blast a deer with a .30-06. People find joy in different activities.

I'm very sad for you. Too much tool box, not enough joy in your life.
