Thanks Finn. I carry a back-up spin rig when I walk the beach. I'll put a copper spoon on it.

That trailer! I like the appreciation in the angler's voices when they talk about tarpon. Can't wait for season 2.

Just for the record, I meant a small copper spoon fly. Like a size 2 or 4.

Pompano feed almost exclusively on sand fleas and a small spoon fly is a decent mimic.

The prospect of Season 2 Silver Kings has my blood pumping! I've been spending some time on theses blown out days doing a little reading, and since this thread is the one-stop-shop for all things tarpon here's a little book review mixed in with some history and personal note.

On the suggestion of a fellow Ag recently I purchased and read "Fishing Yesterday's Gulf Coast" by Barney Farley. I purchased the digital download from Amazon. Because the stories contained are completely intertwined with tarpon fishing in Texas I thought a review here would be appropriate.

The book is a collection of stories written by longtime Port Aransas guide and bait shop owner Barney Farley that were assembled and published posthumously. There is a lot of interesting and prophetic stuff in there about fishing on the Texas coast - he saw the heyday of it in the 1920s - 1950s and in the 1960s started writing short articles for the Corpus papers encouraging conservation long before it was fashionable. There are chapters on most every Texas gamefish and how to catch them; with tackle recommendations only your grandfather could appreciate!

The first few chapters are on Tarpon and a good bit about his experience fishing President Roosevelt.

That's Barney in the white shirt holding the tarpon up. There are parts of the story about the press lining the jetties and how he had to ask the President's security detail to back up so they could troll and catch tarpon. He describes coming down to the Lower Laguna at Brownsville with the President and buying shrimp from shrimp boats. He went into detail about how he had to tell President Roosevelt that neither his boat nor tackle were suitable for tarpon fishing when he was taken out to meet the President on his yacht. A yacht flanked by two destroyers.

Interestingly enough he took the President on a boat that was built in Port Aransas by his brother, Fred Farley, who designed and built boats to handle the chop yet handle good in Texas bays. Farley boats were built there for a number of years. This is a group of Farleys lined up for a day of fishing.

If you'll tolerate an aside - some of the later Farley boats were a little larger, up to 30' in length and featured automotive engines and two speed transmissions for trolling. Here is one outside the shop where they were built.

I thought that was interesting because when I was but a little Centerpole our family boat was a 28' Farley we kept at Port Mansfield. It was exactly like the one pictured above; straight inboard. Here's little Centerpole and Daddy Centerpole running the East cut -

and with a friend backed into the slip @ Mansfield (those slips were destroyed by Hurricane Alan in 1980).

Also, on BClark's reccomnedation I bit the bullet and bough Andy Mill's book. I wish I'd done that a lot sooner! If it were called the 'Encyclopedia of Tarpon' it still wouldn't describe the volume and level of detailed information contained. Thanks for the tip BKC.

That's kinda what makes it so great though. Not a care in the world, out on the water with Dad, you can tell he's happy as hell to be out there.

BTW- I'm not really familiar with the waters down there- what's the East Cut? I know the Mansfield Channel- same thing?
Centerpole90

Yes, the Gulf Intercoastal Waterway runs north and south from Florida all the way around to Brownsville and just outside Mansfield there is a wye in the channel that intersects where the 'East cut' goes through Padre Island out to the Gulf. The two channels meet at 90* about 1/2 mile outside port. It's not where you want to be in your Maverick when the wind is blowing!!

Not at all.

Especially among fly fishermen. Maybe with meat-haul guys but if you're after the bite and the fight then both jacks and bonita are awesome. They hit hard and run fast. Bonita are done after a run or two but jacks fight you to the end. Try catching them on the fly.

One of those bonita I caught, you can see the green popper hanging from it's mouth. We were chasing schools on the blitz and because there were so many people on the water sometimes we'd get to where they had been and they'd already go down so I decided to tie on a popper and try to call one back up. First blitz after I tied it on we drift into where they'd been and I make as long of a cast as I can...

Pop, wait, pop, wait, pop- and you see this blue-green blur streaking up from the depths to just smash the popper. Little bugger came completely out of the water and took off running into my backing in no time.

Plus, I've had multiple people tell me that if you bleed the bonita they're really good eating.

Jacks are just bullies. IMHO, if they were a little more discriminating in what/when they eat they'd be one of the most sought after fish in the salt for fly fishermen. Look at the guys who travel to the other end of the world chasing giant trevally- those are just really big jacks. Those guys are catching 60-100# GTs and it's not at all uncommon to find 25-30# jacks on the Texas coast.
I have caught several jacks on gold spoons with regular spinning tackle and on a fly would be amazing.

Do you eat tarpon?

How long do you want to ignore this user?

No, big ben, you don't. You obsess about them, you dream about them, you spend every waking moment anticipating the next encounter with them, you dump large quantities of cash in pursuit of them, you read to learn about their habits and tendencies, you study the old timers who fished them through the generations, you get a warm feeling inside when you see them roll on the surface, you feel honored when one deems your fly worthy, because you respect them and treasure every single one of them - you just don't eat them.

They would probably taste like sh*t anyway.

That's a great pic of you and your dad, CP. Old fishing photos are always cool.

I've been scouring Google maps searching for a backwater creek/lake that might hold juvy tarpon. I finally found a promising spot and paddled out yesterday. Unfortunately rain and lightning canceled the attempt halfway there. I caught a nice red and some mangrove snappers on spinning gear before the bottom fell out, so it wasn't a total bust.

Random observation: Charlotte HS in Punta Gorda is home of the fighting tarpon. Cool mascot.

The Farley book was good. It's weird to think about how many fish used to be in the gulf. It's also weird that Farley "fly fished" with live shrimp. I still recommend Florida Enchantments for some entertaining fish+ stories.

Finally, the Fort Myers Bass Pro has tarpon and snook in their floor tank. If I don't catch one on my own soon, you might see me on the news... Selling fishing equipment right next to tarpon? That's entrapment. I want a jury of my peers!

I noticed that too about him 'fly' fishing or casting with a fly rod and came to the conclusion that he may have been using a fly rod to cast light tackle because he would often refer to the small spinning reel. I may be wrong, but I had the same thought you did about 'how the heck do you do that?'.

When ya'll get a chance, Ayto & Finn shoot me an email @ my username@yahoo, I'll put together an email roster of our regulars here.

So I was supposed to go fish last week somewhere in Texas but ended up having to reschedule because my partner had family stuff come up on short notice. Anyway, the guide is a buddy of ours and he took the day to fish on his own. And lands this SOB.

I was crying into my computer keyboard.

More Vimeo goodness for the midweek angler dreaming of being on the ol' H2O.

I got a real kick @ 1:00 when the tarpon takes the fly inside the guy's slack. Imagine getting fouled in THAT.

A lot of 'Tested on Animals' schwag happening there.

Maybe you'll get them in Key West or have you already been

In Key West now. My 2 days fishing has turned into 4. Today was crap. Taking the rib and some others off shore tomorrow. I'm gonna bring my 12wt and see if I can't catch a wahoo or dorado. Back on the flats Friday & Saturday.

I like it when this thread gets bumped. Good luck Finn! The flats around Great Heron NWR is my favorite place to fish. Don't forget a trip report...

I still haven't caught a tarpon, but it's not from a lack of trying. On the bright side, the outdoorsy goodness of beaches, canals, mangroves, etc can't be beat. Here's a pic of a dolphin tearing up mullet in a no-motor zone next to my canoe.

I know there are tarpon out here. I've seen em. I hope it's just a matter of time before I can bump this thread with a tarpon pic.

I have a question from you guys with experience;

Daisy chains. How do you approach and present the fly to daisy chaining fish? I've been told they'll bug out if you do it wrong.

Just got off the water with Capt. John O'Hearn. Leadered 2 tarpon today. One about 45-50 and the other pushing 70. The 70 broke my 10wt rod.

Sadly, no pics.

Yesterday I got 4 to eat but all of them came unbuttoned really fast.

Broken 10 wts. F Yeah.

Congrats. Too bad we don't have the porn to ogle.

Thanks Clark. Drop the fly on edge of the circle @9 or cast past the circle and tangent to them so the see it @ the 9?
BKClark
How long do you want to ignore this user?

you got it. assumes fish are rotating counter clockwise. 3:00 going the other way. You want the fly to be there at 9:00 as they are making the corner from 11:00-10:00

I think there's a good visual in Andy's book. If not I have one some where that I can get to you
