Just read about building settlements. They went all out on this feature. Pumps, purifiers, generators, gardens etc... Wish they had games like this when I was younger. It's hard for me to get too invested in this aspect of games with my limited time I can play these days.

Welp, I just had a super mutant kamikaze rush me while holding a live mini nuke. Kept wondering what I heard beeping and saw it too late. Everything in a huge radius died including me.

I'm just on the very first part of establishing a settlement where they want me to build beds. I have the necessary material but underneathe it shows that I need something, it's just a shadow of the cartoon vault guy so I can't figure it out. Do you need a certain perk to build the settlement or something else?

It did. Only upside to that encounter. Next time I shot him in the arm from afar and watched him go boom.

Just back up away from workbench and go to where you want to build bed when at screen you're referring to.

Also some advice when doing that quest. Go into houses and where there are broken beds hit b and cancel out of bed then scrap the old bed then craft a bed where there old one was.

I really, really enjoy this game and would recommend to anyone on the fence. Going through downtown Boston and seeing many of the famous buildings in the north end, theatre district, financial district, etc and seeing what fallout has done with them... Is really awesome. Also, to have so much detail into cities like Lexington, concord, Salem, etc is just great. Yes, there are bugs, but I surprisingly haven't come across a ton so far (although the game has crashed a couple times). I have about 25 hours or so of gameplay (I took off Tuesday and Wednesday from work cause I wasn't really busy) and I'm really surprised at how few bugs I've run into. The game looks great and I think a lot of people just haven't played fallout 3 in a while, cause the graphics seem a ton better to me...

Random things:

I like that they made deathclaws more deadly, but easier to maneuver around (you can actually dodge their hits, unlike in fo3).

Sneak is not nearly as OP as it was in fallout 3.

Hacking computer and picking locks are still the two most valuable perks

I've had a few "yes" or "no" answers that did not correspond to what my character said. The condensed wheel is a love/hate thing as I feel like I don't get as bored with the story, but sometimes the conversation doesn't go the way I thought it was intended.

A few things to dislike:

The VATS system changed a bit from fallout 3 and I don't really like it. I liked being able to plan my moves a little bit more in battle (almost like dragon age), but with enemies continuing to move and attack (albeit at a slower rate), it certainly made it harder to really plan out and see how many enemies are attacking.

The benefits of Charisma are too damn high! To be fair, a lot of RPGs have this problem, but as you progress through the game, there really isn't a better SPECIAL to put points in and the perk tree is really good, too.

The building towns/establishing safe zones is a really neat part of the game; however, building houses is not functionally easy. A lot of the walls don't fit together at all (and building a corner is really hard because the game likes to lock walls in a straight line and so moving a wall you want perpendicular to another wall will cause the game to automatically "fix" it for you and put the wall parallel, not perpendicular), bushes can't be removed (but trees can?) and are often in the way (particularly in sanctuary hills), and pretty much anything as small as an ant pile can make land unusable for building something. I think a lot of work still needs to be done here.

The diamond city radio is terrible. Reused a lot of songs from fo3 and the host is just dreadful. Really wish they would have put more content on there, as I usually have it going while I play but I can only stand the same crap said over and over again for so much.

I feel like a lot of habits from Fallout 3 I had are a hindrance in 4 until I get more used to the changes:

- New Vats for obvious reasons.
- looting dead enemies in the middle of a battle,
- Doesn't look like weapons take damage like they did, which affected my inventory/repair philosophy
- The biggest one for me is how they identify friendlies/enemies on the radar. I feel like I'm always right in the midst of enemies before I know they're there. Even if I may physically see them before I rush in, but if the radar hasn't registered them as an enemy, I mentally haven't either. I think it totally makes sense for the game, it will just take some getting used to.

Overall, feels like this will be a fun game for a long time. Well done Bethesda.

So I ended that Nvidia service and whaddya know, perfect performance. Idiotic that the fo4 specific drivers added something that ruined fo4 performance. Poured a bunch of hours in tonight as a result. Lots of fun.

I'm going to try something with my power armor. I built a platform house (basically, no first floor) and I'm going to leave my armor on the second floor. Then I'll just scrap the staircase and no one will be able to get to it unless I build another one.

I'm going to build a monstrosity of a multi-story complex when I find the right settlement, but for now, this one will do. So far I've only unlocked the first two settlements though. Nice part is that it seems you can have as many settlements/custom buildings as you want. The community leader perk will be really handy though if you want multiple settlements.

Ok, anyone know how to easily find people in your settlement? Im suppose to talk to someone and I've been running around sanctuary trying to find them.

I think this is true. I left mine unguarded at the red rocket for a long time. I just took the power core with me when I left it and it was always there when I came back.

If you make that the only active mission they should have an objective marker you can follow

I'm aware of that. I just also kind of like the idea of an untouchable elevated fortress home.

Love the planets. Especially jupiter.

Holst playing while I was clearing out the museum last night was brilliant!!!

Got Mars while battling the deathclaw, on my second attempt. First attempt, not sure what happened but I went to 0 ammo for the minigun after the deathclaw smacked me around.

Nvidia has a little bit of a history with fking up drivers for new games. ....bf4 was nearly unplayable with their driver they put out at launch.

I've only been able to play for a few hours over the past couple of nights but this game is tough out of the gate compared to the others so far. Ammo hasn't been a problem for me, but I've come across several packs of feral ghouls that would take a few tries to beat. also people still moving during VATS is still taking some getting used to.

I definitely like the quicksave feature in the menu. Got used to hitting that way more often than previous games.

I like the weapon modding feature though I have a bad habit I picked up from New Vegas of picking up every gun I see in order to make repairs so I maxed out my carry weight pretty quick.

I can't tell if I like the ability to pick and choose armor for every limb. I liked the simplicity of just choosing outfits and headgear.

I'm going to love this game, I can tell. I just need to find a 14 hour window to get immersed in it.

So my adventures took me into a run in with the Brotherhood of Steel. That was fun! Finally made my way to Diamond City. Love the accents of the guards and the fact that they are dressed in catcher's gear!

So far I am loving this game!

Yea I found a sniper rifle, then saw two of those feral hounds standing over a camp they wiped out. Thought to myself, I'll just hit them both from a distance on this hill, no problem.

Didn't do as much dmg as I'd hoped and got charged by both of them. But dogmeat and my double barrel shotgun did the rest.

So I was in the hospital in Cambridge last night and hit quick save right before a Deathclaw came out of nowhere. After a few feeble deaths / retries (not even getting it to half health before death), I finally had to revert back to a previous save and get the hell out of there.

So just a fair warning to everybody - there's a Deathclaw in the bottom floor of the hospital.

That's where I am too, although I could have spent many more hours trying to do every quest between the Sanctuary and there. I finally decided to just head on through to Diamond City for at least the ability to fast travel.

Appreciate the help. I'll give that a try this evening.

One last question for y'all: what determines where you can build a settlement? Just having a workbench present? I've already scouted some pretty cool areas for a settlement but have no idea how to build there and get people to move.

As for the game in behind a lot of y'all as I only have about 4.5 hours into it but I'm enjoying every minute of it. Did a couple of quests for the Minutemen (clearing out that car factory was hard) and will probably head to diamond city for a bit before jumping head first into building a settlement. I want to pick the right spot as I anticipate myself building just one really awesome place that I put all my effort into.

When in the settlement stand next to the bed you want to scrap. Then hold the button to the left of the Xbox button (two squares) not sure what it is on pc or ps4. Then just put crosshairs on bed and push X to scrap. That's how you scrap anything. Once done just select bed from furniture and build one there. It's pretty easy once you figure it out. Feels a lot like minecraft.

You'll need to do all of that while in workshop mode. If you are just wandering around it won't work.

Thanks, I've never played Minecraft, but it sounds easy enough.

So, from what I understand, they are set in place for the game (as in, you can't just walk to an area and start making it into one of your settlements). Most of them will have a quest for you to do in order to activate the settlement. For example, sometimes it is as simple as building a few beds and sometimes its as hard as going into an abandoned building with 50 supermutants in it and killing them all.

You have to be in "workshop" mode first. Then you can scrap anything (almost). I scrapped a few destroyed houses last night (a quick easy way to get concrete).
