Mornin' all. This is it. The trial officially ends today with the judge charging the jury, closing statements final selection of 12 jurors out 18 remaining on the panel, and the jury retires to deliberate. After that we will be on verdict watch and I will start a new thread. Depending on how fast the jury returns with a verdict, that might be a very short thread though. Here's hoping that the jury acquits quickly and shows they didn't buy any of Binger's and Krauss' BS.

Self explanatory.

Will post other feeds as they become available. If you have the time, please go over Branca's latest post in the Legal Principles thread, including reading or watching Binger's opening statement. He now has a different theory of the case and the contrast with what he says today should be comical if it weren't so shocking.

Branca's live commenting thread is HERE

Have the big drum, crank it, then draw 12 names/numbers so yes, random.

Yes. Names selected out of a hat...

And, Thanks Hawg for all you have done during this case and in general.

Chances of a verdict today and is a quick verdict good or bad for KR?

I have seen it for judge selection and assignment but never for a final jury from a panel with the alternates before. Judge often comments about the courthouse being 100 years old. Wonder how old that thing is?

quick verdict is good for Kyle. That would indicate they took their first straw poll, either by hand or slips of paper and most if not all jurors are on the same page for complete acquittal. They aren't even entertaining the lesser includeds nor provocation BS.

The longer the jury deliberates, the more likely it is that they convict on something. We, the public still don't know whether the judge has included or kicked out the gun charge. The lawyers know but we won't until we hear the judge charge the jury.

I think a quick verdict would mean acquittal on all charges. If deliberations drag out, I predict either split verdict or hung jury.

Just IMHO. I could be wrong.

Don't know if my stress level can handle watching Binger talk for 2.5 hours today.

It'd be pretty funny if Binger rattles on for 2 hours and 29 minutes during his closing argument only to realize he has less than a minute for a rebuttal before the judge cuts him off midsentence.

Question. So 18 jurors sat during the trial. And 12 will be randomly chosen? Is that a Texas thing as well. Never knew that. Or maybe I never paid attention.

I don't think it's a Texas thing. I'm sure it's just because it's such a high profile trial.

no, thats not a texas thing.

the alternates are known ahead of time and dismissed when deliberations start.

Elections are when people find out what politicians stand for, and politicians find out what people will fall for.

Most states have procedures for alternate jurors. Usually they empanel 14 and then dismiss the extra 2 when deliberations are about to begin. Sometimes those alternates are completely released and leave. Sometimes they are held in a separate room from where the deliberations are being held. But alternates are not allowed to be in deliberations. Also, most states require that deliberations have to start over if they lose a juror and have to replace one with an alternate.

Jury will be sequestered during deliberations. (At least I think they will be. I don't recall the judge telling the jury to pack a bag for today when he dismissed them Thursday but jury services could be handling all of that.)

I think defense makes a clear case today and Kyle walks. If it takes a blurry photo to convict then I can't see how there isn't reasonable doubt. And, I hope Binger focuses most of his time on that photo.

Not sure if I'm going to be able to watch today. I can't stand to listen to that smug a-hole that will do closing for the prosecution. And am nervous a clear case will be determined incorrectly because of politics. Prayers for justice

The calculus changed dramatically late Thursday and on Friday. Although the inclusion of lesser included offenses usually inures to the benefit of the defendant, I'm not so sure that will inure to the benefit of Kyle under these circumstances.

There will be a break in there somewhere as he will address the jury two times. Richards, defense attorney will take his turn in the middle.

Wonder if we will hear the jury groan when Binger gets up to address them again.

I'm not sure this type of jury draw is done anywhere else, but I can see a level of logic behind it.

In a high publicity case like this and the jurors aren't being sequestered, there is a high possibility for juror misconduct and dismissal. Having all 15 seated the entire trial and would make for easy transition if a juror was disqualified mid trial.

Richards is the weakest of the defense attorneys. Definitely should've been Chirafisi on the closing argument.

The more that Binger gets to talk uninterrupted the more condescending and unlikeable he is. When he would get interrupted by objections he would reset and change his tone.

Hopefully 2.5 hours of him really makes him even more unlikeable.

Started with 20, down to 18 now.

1 dismissed due to pregnancy related complications.
1 dismissed for an inappropriate Jacob Blake joke to a deputy.

But I agree, I kinda like the system.

Only reason I'm nervous today is what I saw happen on the Derek Chauvin jury. If there ever was a case of reasonable doubt, that was it.

This is also very stupid. I mean, the only reason alot in this country believe he's guilty is because they think he shouldn't have been there. That's pretty disgusting, but this country amazes me on what it now accepts. Literally, anything can happen.
