His defense asked him if he was apart of any groups. His response was the police thing he was a member of, but wouldn't that open the Proud Boys thing on cross?

He was not a member of the proud boys as far as I know. He happened to be at a bar they frequented but never was there with them IIRC

The only thing I can think of is the Defense believes the ADA's are so incompetent and terrible that they will step on their dicks on cross, like they've done throughout this sham. But wow I don't think this is a risk you need to take.

That only applied if he wasn't on the stand under cross. The judge wasn't going to let them introduce the CVS at random. I don't think it was the defenses choice. I think Kyle wanted to testify and they couldn't convince him otherwise.
Remember he's basically just a kid who probably thinks if he tells his story people will believe him.
Guessing his answers to the DAs will be limited to "yes", "no" and "I do not recall".
