Here's my question. If it is relocated, will that be good enough. Or will there be protests in a year or two to totally remove the statue. There are professional agitators that will never be satisfied and will always look to stir things up.
They will be going after Silver Taps next if they get Sully removed from campus
Sensationalism. Why?

Silver Taps was started to honor racist black people killer Sully.

These hateful racists and bigots will not stop.
They will go after it. Nothing will ever be enough until most of the University is black and Hispanic and all references to its past is eliminated because these "Aggies" claim they are too uncomfortable with campus history and culture

Well said ma'am.
Really? You truly believe people like me are "hateful racists and bigots"?

+pablo

Have I said you are?

No.

Hmmmm....but you assume I am referring to you when I have been very clear on the "ladies" I am discussing.
It was posed as a question. Did you miss that in your rush to type?

EDIT to add - I don't believe there are many racist -here or anywhere. At least my definition of them.
You're not going after Sully. You're advocating to have him relocated. I think it's pretty obvious she was referring to the people fighting to take it down. And if they do get what they want, they will then move on to a new target. It won't stop once the statue is removed. I feel like you're trying to read into it a little much.

There is a lot to unpack there Tanya93. I'm going to stay on point.

+pablo

I understand

It is uncomfortable faced with the truth that it will not stop with moving Sully.
Several of them demand it is gone from campus.
Do you really think they will ignore Silver Taps?

No.

If they still have Elephant Walk, they will go after that as well.
Somehow it will be offensive because Elephants aren't native to Texas.

They will never stop. They will graduate and pass this on to those younger and dumber than they are.
You asked, allow me to answer:

1. "Do you really think they will ignore Silver Taps?"
Yes. Because while it may have started as a way to honor SLR - it now honors all Aggies. On that point alone - a tradition that will go on.

2. "Somehow it will be offensive because Elephants aren't native to Texas."
Another sensationalist comment. As I am not aware that seniors have used or harmed any actual elephants in the past. When you post stuff like this - hard to take you seriously.

3. "They will graduate and pass this on to those younger and dumber than they are."
By 'they' I can only assume you are referring to Blacks and Hispanics from your previous post. If I were an umpire, I would call this "way outside." It sounds almost like fear in the context of your postings. I read somewhere (TEA?) that Hispanic children account for 52% of the students in Texas elementary public schools. In your lifetime and mine - it will happen and soon. Maybe its because I'm half White, half Hispanic - I am not as concerned. I am more concerned that they do well in school and keep making this state a great place to live. I want them to pay taxes and prosper. I could go on - but I said I would stay on point.

Fear not Tanya93 ! We won't wreck the place :-)

+pablo

I don't believe you
If they are so scared of the statue on campus, they will not let that tradition stay.
I am not scared of people being at A&M. I am scared these ****ing nitwits want to fundamentally change who A&M is to reflect their delicate sensibilities because they are fragile and need to be coddled at all times.
I don't care if you take me seriously or not. Read what these people want sometimes. A complete and utter capitulation to their plans. They doxxed a senator because he voted against free tampons on campus. Tried to ruin his life because they are too lazy to fundraise and instead demand the University provide

I might be scared of dogs and cows and horses and spiders but I am not afraid of them being on campus. I fear admin will give in to all their stupid demands. It's ridiculous how entitled they are

And I am done with you. I am not getting banned.

Have a good afternoon

There is no way to decouple TAMU from Sully. Without Sully, there would be no TAMU. To argue otherwise is a fallacy.

What does that say to those who are offended and oppressed by the statue of this man? I don't know them. I do see their public stances on these issues, though. And it seems to me that these people, the ones who are so vehemently opposed to the very idea of the man who was Sully, will not be appeased by removing his likeness.

Because Sully is so intertwined with TAMU, one must assume that they are offended by TAMU itself - how could they not be? They must be offended by many of the traditions surrounding the university. There is no reason to assume, based on their posts and behavior, that the removal of Sully's likeness from the campus will be enough to expunge his memory from the university.

Now you can call the above a slippery slope. If that is the argument I will welcome you to 2020 and ask that you look at BLM and what they have done and are insisting we do with this country, including our founding fathers and our flag.

So no, moving the statue is no answer.

They are, because they see participation as assimilation and they can't stand the idea that others embrace the culture they shun.

In the past, two-percenters simply ignored traditions, earned their degrees and moved on. Today, they agitate on Twitter and seek to destroy everything they don't want to participate in.

It's exactly the reason why Aggies need to stand firm. It won't stop at Sully.

Oh. I thought you had access to some actual historical documents as opposed to the hack job on wikipedia.

I'm more interested in newspaper clippings from the time. They are much more reliable, as anyone can edit wikipedia, and blog posts written about articles at the time can have authors that have an agenda.

The low quality of academic standards at Texas A&M concerns me much more than anything right now.

  • I was recently advised of a PhD (the highest level of academic achievement offered by this university) that was that was conferred based on a bunch of screenshots from a website. My understanding of PhD level research was that should be of enough substance and quality as to be subject to peer review and likely pass. Who knows? Maybe jock PhDs have low standards.

  • Use of Wikipedia as a reference source. The level of academic care with Wikipedia is near zero. Anyone that counts on Wikipedia as a source deserves little consideration. Any researcher that considers it should be stripped of credentials and run out of academia. Disgraceful and pathetic.

We are supposed to be a world class university. That comes with high academic and research standards.

    Try here...

    https://tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/wfj01

"Governor Ross remained in Richmond several days to act as mediator. A complete reorganization of county government resulted in the removal or resignation of all Woodpecker officials and the selection of Jaybirds or persons acceptable to the Jaybirds to fill the offices. After a turbulent era of more than twenty years, the white citizenry once more controlled the government.

A mass meeting was held at Richmond on October 3, 1889, to form a permanent organization to maintain white control. It passed a resolution to appoint a committee to draft a constitution for an association of the white people of Fort Bend County to control county affairs. A second meeting on October 22, 1899, organized the Jaybird Democratic Organization of Fort Bend County. Four hundred and forty-one white men signed the membership roll. The organization played the dominant role in Fort Bend County politics for the next seventy years."

Let me know if you find any documents that contradict this set of facts...

What a weird stipulation. "I believe he should be honored, just not the place he has been honored for a century." Ok.

Also, he isn't really in the center of campus life by any definition. He is in a plaza in front of a building that hosts almost no classes. I had never even been inside the Academic Building until my senior year when I took a random Russian language class.

Places with a better claim to be the "center of campus life".

    MSC
    Dorms
    Northgate
    any of the bus stops.
Agreed - would not use geometry to figure out the center of campus.

In my opinion - that part of campus where his is now, has a history to it and is located in front of one of the oldest buildings on campus. To me, these things matter.

And his history of that is saving this school

These protesting twits wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him.

They hate A&M. They need to go somewhere else because if you think A&M is racist instead of select individuals, you don't belong here. This not a racist school. They bend over backward for these morons and it will never be enough.

I would like to see the base remove the reference to his CSA service and a plaque be affixed over it which provides more detail on his service to A&M.

And I would like to see an additional feature (plaque or other) off to the side that recognizes the racial history of our country, state, and A&M.

And I would like to see additional statues which honor and recognize representative minority firsts at A&M.

Let's honor Sully for his service to A&M. Let's not erase history and the contributions of flawed men.

But let's also not whitewash history and recognize that our country, state, and university wre not inclusive of minorities.

And let's present the image of what the modern A&M is, a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.

That's the way to handle this. That would actually make for productive discussions.
Do we have a statue for the first man enrolled at A&M?
The first member of the football team?

    The first graduate in engineering?

It is pandering to put minority firsts on the campus.

Honor them, if they deserve it, not being first at something but being the best at something.
