Would you recommend the audio book over the print version? I have never listened to a audio book. I just read. and read. and read.

There are two different kinds. The Audible version is a standard audio book. Then there is the "tunnel" version on soundbooth theater. The tunnel version is more akin to an audio play. Music, sound effects, multiple actors, etc.

Personally, I find the tunnel version too distracting (even if the production is incredible), but the Audible version is perfect for me and my commute/chores.

I am glad i started with audio. Jeff Hays is a magician of a narrator.

There is no way the voices I do in my head could ever compare to Jeff Hayes. He is phenomenal and well worth it. As stated, he's a magician.

I am a guy who feels bad saying I "read" a book in listened to on audible. The only book of this series I've actually read is book 7. I will be downloading it on audible and "reading" it that way as soon as it available. This series is a really good boom series. It's a damn work of art as an audible experience.

I just got B1 audio of the series in another last ditch attempt to get into audiobooks. If this ain't gonna do it, nothing will I feel like. Wish me luck!

I'm just not motivated to try. Love reading too much to let someone else do it for me.

I'm the same way. Also reading the stats from the gear seems like it translates better to me. Same with the all caps texts.

I like reading, but I can't read and drive at the same time. Some narrators also improve books. Jeff Hayes does a phenomenal job bringing more depth to the characters. Beyond him though, I like listening to one of my favorite non-fiction books as read by one of the authors more than reading it. It feels like more comes through with his inflection and how says things than just reading the plain text. It also feels a little more like a fun lecture than a technical read.

Ultimately, I think they're just different experiences, and one does not necessarily replace the other.

Agreed, with everything there is always beneficial circumstances. If I had a long commute I would definitely probably enjoy it. Never in the car long enough so not an issue for me. I did try to listen to one (the one and only time I've tried) on an airplane to the UK and found it frustrating because I'd find myself distracted for a moment or mind wander momentarily and realize I just missed what was read, so had to rewind. My OCD went haywire. As the poster above pointed out, the other obstacle for me would be (again, my OCD) I often pause what I'm reading and ponder the impact of the information that I'd just read. Much like above, I will try the audio book for DCC because 1) I love the series so much and will go into withdrawals once it's over, and 2) Sounds like the audio is a theatric event in itself which sounds interesting. But seems less daunting since I've already read the book that I won't have to worry about following along and pondering the detail.

I have a 30-45 minute commute, so it's a pretty good timeframe for listening. Long enough to actually get to listen to something, but not long enough for my mind to wander.

Hope you enjoy the audio book. It really is a theatrical event.

Same for me but there are periods of time such as driving or working out I would like to fill with books as well but my brain just doesn't like to comprehend spoken stories very well. I'm a fairly fast reader and I think the much slower pace of speaking just short circuits my brain somehow.

This applies to all things really. When googling how to do something for example, I get very irrationally mad when I can only find YouTube videos and no actual write ups. Kills me.

I don't know why I am like this but hoping DCC can break this cycle for me.

I usually run audible at about 1.3-1.5x speed for this exact reason, depending on the narrator. Speeds it up to a level I can focus, but keeps the reader from sounding like a chipmunk.

Start the audiobook at 1x and listen for a few hours, then move to 1.1x, rinse and repeat. I listen at 1.3x for most readers, and 1.5x for a few really slow ones.

I think we may be related. I've done one non-fiction book on Audible and I've done several Hardcore History podcasts, but anytime I've attempted fiction on Audible...it just doesn't translate for me.

I do find it fascinating that this soundbooth version of DCC is essentially going back in time to very old school radio theater. He may actually cause a resurgence in that form of entertainment.

No one ever responded to this. I haven't started these but I am in the middle of another Matt Dinniman novel: Kaiju: Battlefield Surgeon. It is not humor based. Kind of gross and dark but good so far.

Just finished The Gate of the Feral Gods. Loving this series but this book needed some editing. The underlying story arc for this level with the Quitzelplik ghost was damn confusing and I still don't really understand it.

And then at the end when they were discussing bounty hunters and crawler markets and how those worked the description was completely contradictory. And then Donut points out that hunters can also get bounties. Well, no *****....that's what bounty hunters are. It's in the name.

Anyway, onto the next one.

I don't recall bounty hunters or the crawler market descriptions being contradictory. I recall them being pretty straight forward.

Donut's comment was because they had only ever talked about bounties being a crawler vs crawler feature. Most crawlers don't go after other crawlers, so there wasn't as much worry. Hey comment is just to point out that the hunters would likely target them first.

Well, it was specifically called out in this one that level 6 is a hunter level with two different merchant models. Outside parties provide loot from crawlers they kill to tourists in one at the Desperado and then crawlers sell loot online using a kiosk. And the bounty hunters are explicitly referred to as different than crawlers.

Also, in book one Donut had/has superior intelligence than Carl due to her class and Carl was really more of the tank. But at this point Carl is Admiral Thrawn combined with Macgyver levels of intelligence, strategy, and ingenuity. That seems to be totally contradictory to how this started considering Carl hasn't been putting points in Intelligence.

Regardless, I'm quibbling over minor crap that ultimately doesn't matter as I love the series.

I have a couple of hours left on gate of the feral gods and I have really enjoyed this one. The extra characters have been fun and I thought the bubble idea was interesting. The whole side story with the frozen sex doll was confusing and felt like a real long way to just introduce a new wild character, but I do like the payoff in that we now have a talking sex doll head as a character. Cracks me up. Definitely Less confusing than the trains book - that one was kinda a mess to me.

Donut continues to be funnier each book. Looking forward to finishing this one and starting the next!

Definitely not quibbing. I get what you're referring to now, and I can understand the confusion. I didn't understand the gravity of what Carl did with the lower levels until the second read.

Adding spoilers for the explanation. I'm going on memory, so some details might be slightly off. faction wars happens on floor 9. The factions use floor 6 to go kill crawlers and take their loot to help supply troops for faction wars.

The crawlers can also sell their loot via merchant or the kiosk that only they can use. But the factions can only use merchants. The factions setting up on floor 9 during all of this can go to the merchants to buy what the crawlers are selling.

So, what Carl did was flood the entire level and killed the merchants. Since they cant use the kiosk, they can't buy anything to armor their troops. Meanwhile, the crawlers can still buy and sell.

Hopefully that clears some up.

As far as the intelligence, it only affects spell casting, mana, etc. Their knowledge doesn't change.

The good thing is that you don't really have to pay attention to the in depth gaming parts about skills and how exactly the levels work. There is plenty of character development and dynamics to keep it very interesting without the gaming part.
