If the TV Series is live action - what are your thoughts on the guy from Reacher as Carl?

Great choice and honestly has the personality to fit the character really well.

Everything else I've heard is a complete step down.

However, I hear He Who Fights Monsters and Everybody Loves Large Chests referenced the most.

My recommendation would be Cradle by Will Wight if you have never read it. 12 books, it's progression fantasy where the main character gets stronger and stronger. First book or two is a little slow but it really gets pretty good.

Pretty funny. The audiobook is read by Jonathan McClain and he's very solid.

I'm on the latest book of He Who Fights With Monsters. It's pretty good, but there are a few things that I know could probably really turn people off of it.

For one, the main character can actually be extremely annoying at times. He has a tendency to be self righteous, and overly sarcastic. However, he is very witty, can be funny, and written to be well aware of his flaws. As are the other characters, who make fun of him for it every so often.

Another, is that it suffers the common problem that power grows entirely too fast. By the time you get 8 books deep things have gotten kind of absurd on how powerful the main character and enemies are, so things can get confusing with the direction the story had to take.

Even with those, it's a very good series. It's not over the top funny like DCC, but the characters are all pretty witty, funny, and interesting. A step down, for sure, but DCC is so good that a step down is still pretty high.

I think sadly DCC is going to become a very formative book series for me despite being mid 30s. I mentioned I started the series over Easter weekend after my dad was hospitalized. Got through several of the books while there and caught up on them over the last few weeks. My dad got better and was released from the hospital until 2 days ago when he was hospitalized with heart failure, almost completely unrelated to the first stint but the infection he had basically did cause this latest diagnoses.

Diagnoses is at best 2-3 months but the next two days will be telling us a lot. Spending a lot of time at the hospital even while he is sleeping or we are both just watching food network to give my sister and mom time to rest before I have head back to Dallas. I will likely finish Inevitable Ruin very soon while here

My dad is the exact opposite of Carls dad. He is a kind and gentle Christian man. Family and friends are rushing to see him and call for prayers. We spent time with his pastors yesterday and I was reminded the impact he has had on my family and setting the foundations for my sister's boys heading down the next generation.

He got me into my love of science fiction going all the way back to the very first stargate movie. I remember choosing to stay home on a Friday night in high school so I could watch the season 7 finale of Stargate SG-1 with my dad. He had a huge love for fantasy as well. Kind of just rambling having woken up in the middle of the night at this point. But yeah I think this series is giving me a small joy in a lot of darkness where I can still laugh at a Goddammit Donut after sobbing just a few minutes earlier

Started this on the kindle unlimited trial. A few chapters in and I'm not hooked yet but will see where it goes. Seems written in the style of the day by day zombie books but for hard core gamer dorks. Not really my thing but mindless entertainment stuff. I can see this being an entertaining tv show.

Sitting here reading the last quarter of Inevitable Ruin while he rests. Sadly things have accelerated and we are in palliative care. We probably have a week at best.

Prayers to Christ and definitely not Uzi Jesus or Emberus or Yarilos much appreciated

Caught up last night.

General thoughts on this series.

I don't know how this evil genius can get away with a magical cum sock weapon in one sentence and have you bawling as Carl embraces a former cookbook anarchist.

In general this is just really well done and I am amazed at the toilet humor combined with genuine character development. Louis went from a freaky pervert (****er got a changeling to shapeshift into Gadget from rescue ranger to lap dance for him, also was not expecting an Erza Scarlet from Fairy Tail callout) to becoming the heart of the team. Katia is a wonderful character and I love her so much. I really hope we see more of her in the care facility in the future.. Mordecai and Odette and Zev are wonderfully layered.

Carl and Donut go through tremendous growth throughout the series. It starts off as a **** the system anarchy type thing for Carl to straight up Old Man's War PTSD. The aforementioned him getting to meet those former cookbook anarchist and especially Milk choked me up every single time.

There is creative world building as we go and I did fall into the trap of ignoring some floor specific lore because I wasn't sure it mattered as much in the earlier books since I thought they would "collapse". I have the audiobooks now and at some point I will go back to listen to them to hear how awesome Jeff Hayes is (based on some Youtube clips, I know I will love Donut even more.

FYI - Hardcover cover for Book 7 is now visible, at least on Amazon.

Started reading the series last November thanks to the recommendations in this thread. Never been a big book reader, but my wife and I tore through these. Absolutely amazing. I am glad I read the books first (and will continue to do so), but going back and listening to the series on audiobook has been great. I now have both parents and both siblings addicted to the series as well.

Apparently this date is not correct per Matt. Also the working title and probably not final. I guess we will see.

"wtf is this. No. This was just made by some rando goodreads librarian and has no truth to it whatsoever. Thats the working title and probably won't be the final title. That date is highly unlikely.".

Sonofa…..

Damn. I always try to be really careful with info I post I promise. I always double check when I see something. So I saw a blurb about it, then went to X and checked Matt's post myself. It mentioned the working title and I guess I was so excited I didn't register that there wasn't a date he mentioned. Saw the name, in my head immediately thought "confirmed!!" and came here all huffing and puffing to spread the Good Word.

Oof. Mea Culpa.

My wife completely outdid herself this Father's Day and made me a legendary Father loot box. She doesn't even read the books but went out of her way to research different snacks that Carl or other characters eat in the books. She also bought me book 1 since I have only listened and had mentioned I wanted to read them now since I just finished 7.

TLDR: I'm trying, but I'm not sold on Dungeon Crawler Carl. Can someone explain what is so great about Dungeon Crawler Carl?

I read book 1 last October, and I'm into book 2 on audible now. Carl's Doomsday Scenario (book 2) spends 3 chapters in the begining picking classes. No plot, no action, no story, just stats and descriptions of classes that ultimately go unchosen. I've played my share of video games, but I always burn out on RPGs with heavy character management, so there's a warning sign.

Texags and Amazon readers freakin' love this series, but I don't get the appeal. It's very similar to a book version of playing, say, Borderlands. I get tired of hearing about health points, hit points, potions and spells. I'd like some more plot. The dialogue and characters are good, which are how I'm staying "in the game". I also want to finish at least book 2, because I'm an avid reader, and this books seems like one of the Big Ones we should read, similar to Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and Ready Player One.

Anyways, I'm glad there is a book that is pulling people into reading and creating a shared experience for this generation, but I wish I was more into it. I'll keep trying, for a while.

In later books, the LitRPG elements lessen.

The general positives are unique and interesting characters, intricate plots and mysteries, the humor, the audiobook has some of the best narration and gets better with each books, and the general "fun" of the story. There is a lot of heart and touching moments throughout the books. Also it blends litRPG, space opera, post-apocalyptic, and satire genres in a very interesting way.

Each book builds up the story and the world.

That being said, if you don't love Donut, aren't feeling the humor, and are not intrigued by the premise, then I don't know if the later books will change your mind. They are generally just bigger, bolder, and sharper than the first three books.

He's only through Chapter 12 of the new book per the releases on his Patreon page. He's been writing about two chapters a month. The rolling releases of his books in hard copies, press tours, and side deals have greatly cut into his productivity on the writing front. I wouldn't expect the next book to drop this year.

But good for him. He deserves the success and I can't begrudge him taking a bit of time to enjoy it.

I wrapped up book 1 and started book 2 out of curiosity to see where it goes next. Not enthralled by the characters really, but the premise is interesting enough even though it completely rips off the best parts of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Hunger Games and The Running Man. Ready Player One can be added to this group too.

I'd say those IPs are interesting enough that there is more space for a new franchise to reuse and copy. In other words I'm sticking around to see what's going on behind the scenes, what the politics and motivation of the game makers are and if there can be anything original added to it to make it better than the aforementioned properties.

The gaming stuff is lost on me. I don't care how leveling up works or what an orc shirt grants. It is obvious all this stuff builds on itself so something Carl obtains will save the day later. Donut isn't a great character and is pretty annoying. The boss and mob battles are pretty boring.

This series is a new spin on the dystopian hyper-realistic surveillance capitalism genre. The DCC phenomena is akin to the offshoots of the zombie genre 25 years ago. DCC is similar to The Walking Dead in that it is a new take on an established genre (this time it is a dystopian hyper surveilled setting instead of a zombie-ridden world). Just because it reuses lots of ideas and themes doesn't mean it is not fun.

TWD wasn't perfect either but did a good job of reusing zombie tropes creatively. DCC seems to be doing the same thing successfully.

Done with book 2 and gonna restart the Kindle unlimited sub to get the others. I'm pretty much hooked. I saw some reviews where folks didn't like book 2 but I continue to be intrigued. For sure I can overlook some of the things which I rolled my eyes at previously.

You're definitely in the sweet spot. For book 3 I was fortunate enough to learn that understanding of the mechanics of the map/layout wasn't necessary, so saved me some brain cells.
