This is what I'm talking about. I am imagining a scenario where they have a VR camera position on the green of a par 3 where you can watch from the vantage point of the pin as players hit the ball in the real time. Have a screen open with the traditional broadcast. Then have a spatial map of the hole that shows the shot and shape of the ball like a 3D shot tracer. Pretty wild.

From my post in 2020:

"I firmly believe that the only roadmap to continued fan attendance in major sports over the next 10 years will be gambling and walled-garden virtual-reality integration."

You could do something where, real time, you get dropped onto the green with the ball in the same spot as the player and then if you can make the exact same put he is lining up.

I would never wear the current version while cooking, but a thinner/lighter version down the line? Could be pretty cool with timers, a readout with a list of ingredients/instructions, etc…

This is hilarious to me. The number one thing besides music we use our alexa for is for timers.

Wow. That is exactly the way I do not want to watch a game. Phones are distracting enough.

Its like wearing a sports bar on your face.

Oh, i thought you meant by yourself with no friends, but yeah, phones are distracting too, I guess.

Pair a miniaturized version of this

In a more streamlined version of this

With a more advanced version of this

With solid state batteries that charges in 6 minutes and pairs to an advanced iPhone with low latency WiFi/Bluetooth like protocol that does the processing off headset. Get 4+ hours of battery life and then charge in a glasses case.

Wouldn't be surprised if it happens by the end of the decade.

I'm curious if when you pin something to your wall, will it keep it between restarts? It would be kind of a pain if you have to repin everything every day.

Also, I wonder how well this works in low light environments. My Quest 2 doesn't really work well in low light.

Haven't watched one of his videos in awhile, but this one showed that the tracking system may not work beyond a certain velocity. Has any tried one on a plane?

Nice moment trying to feed a donut to a dino

Edit: I should have looked at the user guide first

Ditto. That actually turned me off. Zero desire to watch that way.

However, the PGA scenario is intriguing.

How many people are going to get mugged when they wear these going around New York City? It seems like your making yourself and easy target because it tells everyone around you if you're paying attention or not.

I think his take is pretty spot on but leaves out the intersection with personal ai. When this is available in an affordable and less obtrusive package, everyone everywhere will be living in an even more oblivious bubble of their own entertainment all the time and personal interaction is even more boned. Really cool tech, but I hope I'm wrong about where it leads us.

I have no real desire to have one of these, but I'm now wondering if it's something that I should buy at some point just so I don't wind up being an old person that has no idea how to use modern technology.

It'll be a couple generations before the size/weight/price starts to get into any kind of truly usable range, but I'd bet they'll become a lot more common in a few years. You don't have to be in a rush

Scenarios like the F1 and PGA concepts are where I think the tech may start to really find some legs.

The thing just came out yesterday and is pretty hard to get. The people wearing these out in public are 100% doing it so people know they own one. I'm curious how many of these we will see a month or two from now.

I'm really talking about in the next 5+years. I could easily see it being nothing more than a novelty that is only used for watching movies, but I could also see it evolving into something that is a normal part of everyday productivity. I just think about all of the older folks that I encounter that are beyond clueless about how to operate a computer, and I would like to avoid winding up being whatever version of that exists for my generation.

I wonder if this will be like the iPhone that starts off with amazing tech but expensive and limited, then quickly becomes ubiquitous. Or if it be like 3D TV that everyone thinks they want but ends up a fad with all the tech in drawers collecting dust.

I guess we'll know in a year or two.

Probably somewhere in between. I think this particular version will be closer to the 3D TV, but I do think there is more to the technology than it just being a fad. I also, though, don't think it's every going to be as ubiquitous as the phone has become. Humans are, in their nature, social beings, yet these headsets are very antisocial. The phone helped people connect to each other in new ways. The headsets encourage you to tune out the world and ignore everyone else. Eventually there will be smart glasses, and certainly a lot of things will get pulled from these VR sets into those glasses, but the glasses won't be immersive.

I hate coming off as a hater, but I still just don't see how this becomes useful enough to warrant everyone having one. With the iPhone, it turned out that having a device that was always connected to the internet in a comparable way to a computer was something that everyone wanted. And it's a phone, which is easy to put away and be minimally intrusive if you want.

I really struggle to see what unasked need this tech addresses. The idea of AR glasses is very intriguing, but this is way far from that. I remember being excited for Google Glass but that was shelved for whatever reason.

To be fair, I also questioned why anyone would want an expensive tablet or smart watch, and I now have been using both an iPad and Apple Watch for years. So maybe I am not a good judge of what tech is revolutionary haha

Absolutely don't think it'll be an "everyone has one" kind of situation, lots of people just won't have the need or desire. But if it gets to the sweet spot in price to features and there's some apps that really take advantage of the platform, I can totally see it becoming popular enough to have a solid market share and following.

A game-changer. This (among many other things) will be what gets me to buy the next iteration. Finally being able to watch movies shot in IMAX in their true 1.43:1 IMAX aspect ratio. Until now, we could only see these versions of the movies in true IMAX theaters, as even the home-released, 16x9 versions of IMAX movies, that claim to give us the IMAX versions, cut off the top and bottom of the 1.43:1 IMAX frame. So, for instance, soon every Christopher Nolan movie will finally be able to be seen again as originally intended, at home, with no cropping/compromises...

As an example, most AMC IMAX screens, LieMAX screens, and IMAX on Blu-ray/digital only give us the 1.90:1 versions. But now, for the first time ever, the "taller," 1.43:1 image will finally be able to be seen at home, which is so much more immersive...

So if I stare at my phone long enough, which happens when I am offshore more often than I would like to admit, my vision seems shaky when I get up and move around. I just can't imagine looking at a screen an inch from your face is going to be anything but terrible for your eyes. How is that addressed in all of these devices?

You posted this for me, didn't you? Because now these have my attention. I'm intrigued with these for movies like this and gaming but that's it. Won't ever work on it or wear it in public.

I bet at some point there will be filters and/or prescription filters for stuff like this. Thinking down the road...
