This thing is way bulkier than I was expecting, and I sure as hell won't be dropping $3,499 on it, but it's still pretty cool to see its capabilities when it comes to movies and TV. I think I'll wait for the 2025 version, though, which is rumored to be thinner, sleeker, and cheaper…

You can watch your bank account drain in real time using it.

I'm sure Apple will print money with this, as the functionality looks exactly like what people have been expecting a VR headset to be over the past 10 years. But I will personally be waiting until they are ubiquitous and can pick up one refurbed for around 1/3 of that price.

Won't be buying the first iteration at that price. But excited to see where the technology goes in the next 5 years.

Yeah, they just had to bite the bullet and release the super expensive/bulky version, in order to get it out into the wild and start the real-world development process. But once they finally get this thing to the size of a large pair of sunglasses, and at the price point of, say, an iPhone Pro, it has the potential to be pretty damn cool. I'd buy it for air travel alone, never mind everything else it'll be able to do in a few years.

One question I have is whether they build a badass set of speakers into it, or if they say that you need to buy air pods for it to work?

Also, will I need a data plan for this thing on top of the sticker price?

They built a badass set of speakers into it, with spatial audio and everything. Not sure about a data plan, though.

One day they may misfire but they have a great method.

Release new technology before it is perfected at a high price point and get by on name and hype. And then have a much improved model ready to go in 12 months.

Apple Watch came out 8 years ago for $550+. You can get the newest one (8) right now for $380. And the technology has improved so much in 8 years. And now basically the whole country has one.

It's going to have to completely replace what a laptop does to have a shot imo. Assuming a similar price discount, you are looking at these VR goggles being around $2400 in 8 years. That's still a hefty price increase over just buying a MacBook, especially when competitors goggles are running at around $300-$600. I don't think battery tech is where it needs to be yet either.

That being said, Apple has made me look like a fool multiple times when i say things like the paragraph above, so we will see.

I would bet they eventually have a Pro and a Standard skew each release. And I'd have to imagine their goal is to get the standard skew to be competitive with other headsets on the market. Of course, it'll probably still carry a bit of a premium price since it's an Apple product.

Finally a use case for 360 video. I love it. The price tag is obviously horrendous but with compared to premium tvs or a computer it's fairly comparable. I always thought 360 degree movies were the future and we finally have a product that can make a reality.

Just FYI, the rumored sleeker/cheaper 2025 version is supposed to be standard/consumer friendly/non-pro version. Then I imagine the pro version will get an update a year or so later, and on and on it'll go. So, yeah, the pro/standard iterations, same as the iPhone, will exist here as well, eventually resulting in glasses at some point late this decade/early next decade, which is what Apple finally sees as the iPhone killer.

For me, it's less about 360 video (though that could be cool) and more about being able to make the "screen" as big as you want. In fact, there's one mention/example of being able to make the the image appear 100 feet wide. Combined with being able to watch in a virtual environment of your choosing (White Sands at dusk looked particularly awesome), I can't wait to watch movies like that in bed, on a plane, etc.

You can already watch movies on a 100' screen in a virtual environment with the Meta Quest 2 for $300.

From what I understand, though, the quality doesn't come close. Apple offers higher than 4K resolution, in HDR, with virtual surround sound.

Haven't taken the plunge into the VR world other than a Samsung thing my wife bought me years ago.

My only perceived complaint w/the tech is sound. I love in my media room having the shake of the sub and whatnot. The in-ear audio is probably light years more immersive than what you'll typically be able to put in a home theater. Pairing the sound from headphones to an in-rub sub would be awesome. For all i know that already exists, this is just my unresearched opinion.

The disney stuff looks pretty awesome.

AR as a concept has some really awesome real world applications, but I see some serious drawbacks with this particular device.

For one, this limits you to one viewer: you. You can't watch on this with other people, so it is purely a personal device. You're still going to watch on a TV the vast majority of the time.

Yes, the video calling and ability to watch on a plane is potentially useful, but it's not something that can't be done with a phone and maybe a headset adapter like the old Samsung Gear VR. It's A LOT of money for something that doesn't have a huge differentiator.

The interface is far too burdensome for actual use as a computer/monitor. No one is going to do hand motions like minority report as a primary interface because it is ****ing tiresome. This is why LEAP motion controllers never really took off. People figured out that resting your hands on a desk and using a keyboard and mouse was actually much easier than holding your arms up to work.

What AR is waiting on is actually augmenting reality, not just replacing a monitor or TV with a headset. AR requires computer vision and object recognition to marry what is around us to its useful background information in order to deliver value. Think automatically overlaying maps while you're driving/walking and acting as a HUD, giving menus and reviews for restaurants you're passing by, or giving online buying options for products you're looking at in a store. Another potential use would be tutorials on assembly or disassembly of objects with overlaid directions as you go. It needs to be a real assistant, not just a display. That's when it is DOING something for you instead of just being a bulky appliance on your face and giving you access to what's in your pocket for the 95% of the time you don't even need or want it.

90% of the experience for 10% of the price. I guess the point is that even with that option available on current VR headsets, hardly anyone uses it. Completely isolating yourself from the entire world is not a viable option for most people, especially with a hot/heavy headset on your face and a battery pack in your pocket (in Apple's case). Even if they cut the price to $2000 or $1500, I just don't get who this is for.

Could have cool WFH applications but not gonna be a home entertainment device for anyone other than live alone. Can't even get people to wear 3D glasses. Gonna wear ski goggles? Nope

It looks legitimately mind blowing, but that price tag is going to create a significant barrier for entry. In a couple of years who knows but that headset has Ready Player One vibes.

Again, Apple had to start somewhere. This product isn't the endgame, it's just the beginning. The eventual goal is glasses, and then, way, way down the line, contacts. The only people who this iteration is "for" is anyone with enough extra $$$ willing to take the plunge and essentially act as test cases. Think of this iteration as a glorified beta prototype, except released to the public, that will continue to be refined time and again over the next decade plus.

Nope, not how product dev works, especially at places anywhere near the scale of Apple.

So unlike basically every Apple product ever, the Vision Pro won't improve over time, seeing many different iterations, leading to sleeker models and something more people can afford?

What, exactly, is your "nope" in reference to?
File5
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Every other apple product was affordable already to the masses and delivered something immediately attractive to almost everyone. Ipod, Iphone, Apple watch roughly meet those criteria. This definitely breaks that mold and I argue doesn't meet either. That being said, I personally agree with those that say once Apple gets in a product market they're likely going to do if right and take significant market share, the market is just much smaller for this product.
BudFox7
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Apple is not a build in public, live ops beta testing company, or launching products for niche markets. They believe they'll sell tens of millions
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Clearly, I don't think this is an *actual* beta product. Hence my phrasing. Good gosh.

My larger point is obviously that it will be refined, over time, to something more people can afford. That, and multiple Apple insiders, who have been proven right time and again, have been saying that a more consumer-friendly version is around the corder, come 2025-ish, that will no doubt build on what is learned via this iteration, in terms of the software that will be developed over the next couple of years, seeing what use-cases become the most popular, etc. No different than there are MacBooks and MacBook Pros, iPads and iPad Pros, and iPhones and iPhone Pros, there's a reason they named this version "Pro," indicating that a more affordable, non-Pro version is coming. And then, just like every other Apple product, as the years go by, the Pro features will ultimately become standard in the non-Pro version, as the Pro version keeps getting better and better (and smaller and smaller)

That said, report after report has noted that Apple is taking somewhat of a different approach with this product, and considers it more of an "experiment" than many of its past products (note: I don't mean "experiment" literally either). This thing has been delayed over and over, trying to fit the battery in the headset itself, to no avail, trying to make it thinner, to no avail, etc. So they finally just said "f/ck it" (again, not literally) and released this iteration, knowing full well the battery will eventually fit inside the headset, there will eventually be thinner versions down the road, etc.
