I own the Silmarallion and read it once or twice in 20ish years. The stories are really cool, but to me its pretty obvious it isn't a finished product.
Tried to make this point last week to no avail. What Tolkien had written was only ever meant to be background for LOTR and never meant to be published for public consumption, and most of it was unfinished. It took a LOT of Christopher Tolkien to get it to a state fit for publishing.

There pictures above really reinforce it, but they did a great job at making Galadrial's armour. Looks cool looks really tough and functional, but also feminine, but avoids the bad stereotypical fantasy female armour.

Also, embarrassingly I've never realized that using a volcano to spew ash to blot out the sun to make a home for orcs who are sensitive to the sun is a great idea. I've even read Mistborn multiple times where a similar device is used

I'm with those of you who have found this show to be immensely enjoyable.

I had never read any of the LoTR novels or the Hobbit prior to seeing the films, and as much as I enjoyed the movies, I didn't immediately become a huge fan.

But last year I decided to watch the first three movies again, and I don't know if it's because I'm just older or in a different frame of mind, but the movies absolutely blew me away, and I've re-watched a 2nd time since then, to see the extended cuts, which I enjoyed even more.

I ordered the books (LoTR, Hobbit and the Silmarillion) from Amazon and they were delivered a few days ago and I'm well into Fellowship now.

All of that is to say: I've never been really knowledgeable about this world Tolkien created or characters and stories within it, so I wasn't in a place to discern how Rings of Power might depart from canon lore. But I'm loving it.

And I'm really loving the Nerd of the Rings guy on YouTube, whose videos are helping me get educated about a lot of stuff really quickly.

Honestly everything about the costume design in this show is outstanding. One of the best aspects of the show.

Yep, agreed. I feel like we haven't discussed it much on this thread so far but everything is great.

I made it about 90 seconds into that. I get criticisms and, it seems to me, the show runners do too. I wouldn't call the show poorly received at all. Honestly, calling the show "try hard" while making that video is the pot calling the kettle black.

It's also interesting to invoke Christopher Tolkien almost immediately considering he hated the Peter Jackson movies and was whole heartedly against any kind of adaptation to the best of my understanding.

Just to prepare you for The Silmarillion, it's a great read, but isn't a narrative story the way the other books are. It's much more akin to a historical or biblical text to me.

I think the supposed "backlash" is completely overblown. By almost any metric that isn't the RT audience score (which is clearly a result of review bombing given the number of votes), most reviews have been positive.

Almost all of it was complaints about being woke that happened before the show even aired.

Dang. It feels there is so much more and how can they fit it in 2 episodes.

The wait until the next season will seem forever.

Oh well, tomorrow morning new episode and can't wait.

Still waiting for the next seasons of Witcher and Vikings Valhalla.

Not trying to pick an e-argument here, but LOTR only exists because of the publisher's request for a sequel to the Hobbit, a work that grew from the silly bedtime stories Tolkien invented for his children, enhanced with window dressing from the "great tales" during the writing process to make the world feel deeper. As a matter of fact, when the publishers asked for a sequel to The Hobbit he presented the drafts of the Quenta Silmarillion but was rejected.

The Silmarillion and the stories of the First Age were Tolkien's lifelong passion project that he always wanted to finish, something he spent his entire adult life developing, tinkering with, and expanding upon. Without his focus on that material, we wouldn't have LOTR or at least a LOTR that is recognizable.

I'm pretty sure that Amazon doesn't have the rights to anything solely in the Silmarillion. So while they can base characters and adapt them from characters in that book they can't take the characters and put them directly into this series. Idk if that applies to anything Lore related though.

Those who know more/have bigger brains feel free to correct me on this

You are correct. They have The Hobbit, LOTR, and Appendicies.

They are extrapolating this series from the Appendicies.

After this series ends, my Friday night with one daughter will be the Black Panther so she can go see Bp2 with me, then the Christian Bale Batman trilogy, then see if she can handle Stranger things.

My other daughter and I are watching the entirety of The Simpsons from the beginning. At our current pace, it's going to take us 2-1/2 years to catch up to Season 33.

Stop at Season 12.
