Always thought Dickie Thon is white. Just saw video about him getting hit in the eye with a pitch and was shocked when I heard him speaking with a Latino accent. The guy is Puerto Rican.
So you thought he was white, then you heard him talk with an accent, then your ears changed your mind about his skin color?

And with that LAD doesn't even have to win it all to guarantee we miss 2027. TBH I don't even understand how it's correctable at this point, with respect to all the deferred money. I know "everyone else can do it too", but not everyone has the massive advantages of LA and NYC wrt to media, international markets, etc.

I mean, just preventing future deferred deals would create an even bigger LAD advantage so no way that is a solution. You almost have to renege on some existing stuff to make it work. Enjoy this year I guess.

Solution is to spend your time and money elsewhere. MLB will figure out how to unfckk itself or it will continue to burn.

Pretty sure if Jim Crane started handing out $1 a year contracts with a promise to pay half a billion ten years from now that MLB would've ended that long ago.

Not to mention that all the usual taints like Costas, George Will, and so on would've gone off about the integrity of the game being undermined and so on.

MLB really deserves what it's gonna get. The distance from America's 3rd most popular sport to irrelevancy isn't as great as it seems to think.

Let the MLB go on strike. If people would stop spending their money on tickets and $25 drinks they would have to wise up. I can't justify spending $300 a ticket to sit on the nosebleeds at an Aggie game. I'd rather take my boys to the deer lease and let them enjoy the outdoors and watch the game at camp around a fire under the stars. Don't get me wrong I love Houston sports but I'm not about to go spend a ton of money to watch a game anymore when the tv product is much better.

My first job out of college was working at Rice's athletic department. His daughter played volleyball at Rice (100000% smoke show) and he was around a lot. I finally got up the courage to talk to him one day and he couldn't have been nicer.

If the Astros don't lose JR in 1980 and Thon in 1984, you have to wonder what they would have been in the 80s.

It's easy to blame LA, but Detroit is the one that agreed to trade Skubal to them.

Well, that may blow up my June 2027 plans of taking the family to Chicago and hitting White Sox and Cubs and two more stadiums.

after 112 games:

2024 ---> 57-55

2026 ---> 57-55

the '24 club begins an 8-game winning streak in game 113

Probably jinxing it but Peña quietly putting together a 13 game hitting streak. Walker has a 5 game streak going.

at this point I hope we dont buy anything other than an expiring salary dump OF bat for a throwaway prospect. Were unlikely to compete for a world series but all you have to do is get to October.... see 2019 and 2021 WS Champs

I have two left (Pittsburgh and St. Louis) and was planning on knocking them out next year when the Astros go there

The Treasury Department is buying yen at the moment to prop up Japan and the Doyers buying up all the good players with deferred deals while MLB looked the other way is about to kick off a long lockout after this season. MLB's big bet on Ohtani and the Doyers is failing spectacularly.

Good job, Manfred.

It's going to be very hard to trade Pena over the "offseason", so we'll probably end up getting nothing for him. Chances of extending him are what? About 5%?

While I get we are playing well, I am still unreasonably hoping we trade Pena to infuse controllable talent on to the big league team

I'm pretty optimistic that there will be baseball next year. Baseball has evolved to include too much money on both sides to miss an entire season. Now it may only be half a season so it's fair to question if someone will pay as much for 80 games of Peña vs 162.

I'm not sure what I think anymore. I could buy into going all in IF you are committed to trading off guys like Pena (maybe even HB) in the offseason to recoup what you gave up and then some.

Crane is currently trying to convince JV to come out of retirement and is going to trade Neyens, Blubaugh and another top 10 Astros prospect for him

Doubtful. The Dodgers just lined up perfectly. Tigers wanted a major league ready arm (Ryan can come up as soon as healthy and has #2 upside) and a near major league ready bat (Hope will contribute next year). People can poo poo it all they want but it was a solid trade for the Tigers.

FWIW- I asked about this and was told by two separate people there was a deal in place with Minnesota but nobody would give me specifics.

Robbie Ray is a name I've heard pop up for about a month now.

Add Kevin Gausman and Reid Detmers to that list as well as far as pitching goes.

Taylor Ward, Dalton Varsho, Jo Addell, Jake McCarthy, Trevor Larnach, Luis Arraez are hitters I've had mentioned to me at least once over the last couple months.

Crane wants pitching. Dana wants hitting first but wants to add an arm as well. We'll see what happens.

Is Dana just an overpaid director of scouting in the current Astros organization? Seems like Crane is acting more as the GM. Maybe Dana is the secretary or assistant that does all the legwork for Crane, but he has to be the weakest GM in baseball (in terms of autonomy and responsibility).

Fair or unfair?

If he stays healthy the rest of 2026, Pena will fall about 50-70 plate appearances short of qualifying for the batting title, which is good for Yordan, because JP is right behind him in average!

I'd rather have capital weighted towards pitching, with a platoon bat or solid OF upgrade (wouldn't take much to qualify on this team).

Ketch's confirmation also implies- at least, I think it does- that Crane will deal minor league talent at the expense of future years. He's not giving up roster players this year.
texasaggie2015

Yeah. Crane calls the shots - especially the more significant moves. He even handles the negotiations.

Dana was handed a small amount of cash this offseason and told to go bargain bin hunting after Crane got his guy (Imai).

I don't know about this. I think they would be willing to do it if it made sense.

I'm not sure though.
