I think the conversation between Adar and Halbrand made me believe that Halbrand isn't Sauron and is either a potential Ring Wraith or the King of the Dead. Mainly Adar mentioning some child or love that he killed. And the reaction from Halbrand there made me think he hit the nail on the head.

I'm leaning towards the King of the Dead as the writers will want to give him some redemption story as he's pretty likeable right now.

I think he is definitely going to be a RingWraith. That much is fairly obvious, seeing as we will need 9 kings of men. I think the other Numenorean with the big grey beard will also end up being one of the Nine.

The King of the Dead is king of the people in the mountain, not in the Southlands. That would be quite the change, if they were to do that. Unless Halbrand migrates his people to those mountains after Orodruin erupted.

Going back to when we first meet him, he is also very adamant that he is a horrible being and has done many horrible things.

Maybe he realizes he is evil or evil reincarnated?

If this is in reference to his possibly being Suaron, I don't think the Evil One having a crisis of conscience would sit well with most fans.

If he is/was just a follower, or perhaps the eventual Mouth of Sauron or Witch King, that's a different story and it might work really well.

If he is turns out being a Ring Wraith, it doesn't mean he turns to evil, per se. It would be more of a tragic story of being consumed by the evil power of Sauron, falling into darkness and being pulled into the shadow spiritual realm.

The "southlands" are no longer habitable for humans after the eruption and the resulting orc-friendlier skies. It seems like a foregone conclusion that he's going to have to migrate with them somewhere.

Do we know if Adar is an elf or just the Miss America of orcs? That whole thing confuses me. Like he calls himself an orc, but then he has the same customs as the elves with the seeds.

They have gone with the "Morgoth created Orcs by corrupting Elves" version of the origin of Orcs. In that sense Adar is a proto-Orc or one of the true Morgothian Orcs.
Excuse me, it's Uruk.

Making Pharazon a Ring Wraith is one helluva retcon. I think I'd stomach Sauron's having a conscience first before THAT leap...

He's going to have to lose that gut if he wants to qualify as a wraith.

I think Pharazon usurps the throne of Numenor in some form or fashion. I just feel like from what we have seen from his character so far he desires power/influence more than anything.

Well if I recall correctly, he forces Miriel to marry him. Now, the big question is if that is described somewhere in the Appendices, because they can't use the other lore writings. He's going to really use the anti-elf/anti-Valar sentiment to come to power and bring about the destruction of Numenor.

It's funny how most episode analysis/reaction thumbnails look exactly like you'd expect them to look. Not in a good or bad way, they all just have the same, distinct vibe. This guy's thumbnails, however, always look like a Sunday school lesson or sermon being streamed, and it always cracks me up, without even clicking on it.

It's very much that vibe on the videos. It's Tolkien school for every episode.

Was there a reason Amazon only bought a portion of the rights? Seems like the story they're trying to tell is really hamstrung but the stuff they don't own.

Speaking of tv rights, I'm still having trouble connecting with this show. Idk why, it's gorgeously shot and you can see the money/effort they put into it (unlike wheel of time). I like all the actors but idk if it's maybe I'm bored with another story about sauron as the big bad? They keep referencing Morgoth this and Morgoth that and the whole time I'm like.."I think I'd rather watch a prequel series about Morgoth's rise and defeat?"

So idk if it's a "villain problem" or just the fact that I know exactly how this story ends, but I can't seem to find myself invested in any of these characters. Unlike House of The Dragon, where I have no idea who "wins" or dies or whatever (not to say that story doesn't have its own problems in creating characters to "cheer" for) , I know Isildur slices Sauron's finger off and Galadriel & Elrond stick around for Frodo's quest.

Pretty sure dealing with the Tolkien estate is notoriously difficult and they really don't like giving up the rights to the stories.

The last episode where people we know survive get into a dire situation, kills any suspense for me. This always happens when you're doing a prequel, plot armor as they say.

I wish writers in general would adapt, but unfortunately I don't see that effort being put into a story.

I mean.... we know the named Numeranorans survive - and probably Andoir and his human girl friend, and probably her kid.

Everyone else can be a red shirt though.

There was a Tolkien professor on the Friendship Onion podcast a while back (Dom Monaghan and Billy Boyd's podcast), and he said that in his college course, they go through one page of Tolkien per class or so. So 2 hours on every single page of LOTR.

This Rings and Realms series is cake in the Tolkien world.

That class last 20 years?

I almost feel like we need a separate "I've seen and read the LOTR and Hobbit but that's basically it" thread, but there'd only be like three people on it.

He has a podcast that is going through LOTR. I am 7 episodes in (about 2 hours each) and we are still in chapter 2

That isn't true.

So what did Amazon buy? "We have the rights solely to The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King, the appendices, and The Hobbit," Payne says. "And that is it. We do not have the rights to The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, The History of Middle-earth, or any of those other books."

I own the Silmarallion and read it once or twice in 20ish years. The stories are really cool, but to me its pretty obvious it isn't a finished product.

Which, for me, is why I don't really have any problem adjusting to the show not being able to use it as source material.
Some of the stories could make excellent seasons though.
