Watched the first 2 light night. Random thoughts

It was ok. You can tell the spent some money to make it but it still felt like a TV show not a movie.

The cave scene was well done.
The chick playing Galadriel is not hard on the eyes
I don't like the clearly female dwarves but then I am sure if they made them closer to the books a certain group of people would be complaining about how that would be grooming.
The sailing to the west part was good but man the implications were dark. It stuck me as closer to Leif's sacrifice in Vikings than the happily riding off into the sunset that I always imagined. Basically the elfs are a giant death cult and by getting on the boat to cross the sea, they are effectively committing suicide
I would have like to have seen more of the mines.

Yeah, I don't know if people here are being intentionally dense or if they're just too close to the source material, but I definitely had similar thoughts as you. I think the previous poster was far too hung up on the Valhalla comparison. I knew that Valinor was supposed to be akin to the afterlife (and one akin to christian mythology, at that). That said, I had never imagined it as a completely distinct plane of existence, such that elves would literally have to shed their physical forms to enter. It definitely gives the whole idea of "sailing west" at the end of ROTK a different feel. I don't think your characterization of it being a suicide cult of sorts are far off. If you willingly get on a boat that you know will lead to the end of your corporeal form, that's pretty much the definition of a death cult - even if you are 100% certain that it will lead to your resurrection in some better place.

Like you, I read the books long ago and have only really seen the movies in recent history. And anything in the extended anthologies is beyond my scope - as I suspect it is with the vast majority of the show's audience.

The thing that seems to be getting lost here is that suicide implies cutting your life short, obviously a heavily negative connotation. The Undying Lands are the exact opposite, a place where you live forever, without pain or sorrow or grief. It's the ultimate reward. That's why Gandalf, Bilbo, Frodo, and a few select others being chosen to go there is such a big deal.

I dont get your post. Are you saying she is hot? There's ten women in any grocery store prettier than that, and she's supposed to play the most stunningly beautiful being ever?

Since I am really enjoying this so far but everyone else seems to be gripey I'll throw out my nitpicks.

The hobbit scenes are pretty boring.

I don't like the look of the dwarves. Too round in the middle and soft. Liked the Hobbit movie version or Gimli better.

That's all I got. Pretty fun so far.

This is what Google gives you when you type in frumpy woman. It's just me laughing at the classic TexAgs overreaction about the attractiveness of women.

Man, get over it. It's fantasy, and it's not like they scraped the bottom of the barrel by ANY means.

"She is SUPPOSED to be a 10. I don't think she's a 10. Show sucks." is basically what you sound like.

For the elves, yes - they live forever in the Undying Lands. Even if they die in Middle-Earth, they go for a time to the Halls of Mandos until their bodies are reconstituted, at which point they live forever in Valinor (with I think just one exception, our dude Glorfindel). It's not Valhalla or a suicide cult. I think of it like the ultimate retirement home where the elves await the Dagor Dagorath, the Last Battle against Morgoth once he returns through the Door of Night. After that, "if any change shall come and the Marring be amended, Manw and Varda may know; but they have not revealed it, and it is not declared in the dooms of Mando."

I do think the general consensus, though, is that Bilbo, Frodo, Samwise, and Gimli, are still bound to their mortality. They will ultimately die in the Undying Lands and pass to whatever Doom awaits Hobbits and Dwarves. For them, too, it's a retirement home, but they have a check-out date, so to speak. Gandalf, of course, is another story - as a Maiar, he's truly immortal and his return to Valinor is a homecoming. It's possible that he sheds his physical form once in Valinor.

Lol, ok, my opinion is dumber than yours, and i am really, really dumb for wanting attractive, charismatic, interesting looking actors to be cast most supremely heroic characters in fantasy literary history.

That particular got scene was a bad fight, poor acting, with dorks, in particular this dork, pretending to be heroes in bad costumes. Felt like watching the amateur dork fest fights at rennfest

Fwiw, hollywood used to do a pretty good job with casting.

Ok, explanation ; didnt really think got would be my thing. Didnt make any attempt to watch it.

Then one day it was on and i decided to watch a few minutes of it. That scene with this dork in it was what was on. The scene was so bad i didnt watch it again, until years later when everyone was saying how great it was. I binged it during the flu and it was good.

That scene and actor were probably the worst filmed 10 minutes of the whole show.

But honestly, why are so many people here such *******s these days? The Texags community did not start out as a place where insults and snide remarks were the rule, rather than the exception, especially on the fricking entertainment board.

I think it is because you just randomly come in and **** on the show based on not liking the way one actor looks from one scene you watched of a completely different series many years ago.

The debate was whether this show is well-cast and i dont think it is, unfortunately. I am not alone.

So do you disagree? Do you find this actress to look in the ballpark of a 4000 year old most beautiful elf queen that ever lived? Or this actor (any of these dudes) really fitting the heroic immortal elf lords? If so, please extrapolate.

I don't think she fits the part of a 4000 year old most beautiful elf queen. But then again, Galadriel in RoP is probably barely 1000 years old, if that. So you know. Maybe the casting is appropriate.
The Porkchop Express
How long do you want to ignore this user?

That's definitely not what extrapolate means.

But I digress. I think Morfydd Clark is a great Galadriel. A lot of her beauty is in her character's ferocity and drive. She is relentless in her pursuit of what she knows is right. I'm sorry you're so fixiated on her looks. But again I think you're missing the interpretation of beauty. Galadriel is beautiful the way a real galadriel is, or the tree of theirs that gets wiped out. Beauty goes way beyond physical attraction.

I do not like the look of gil-galad but it's hardly keeping me from liking the show. Elrond and Celebrimbor can pass for kin, and this Elrond for a young Elrond. He has some Hugo Weaving in him. But most of all, I want actors and actresses that can perform the roles to the material, and so far thats what i have gotten. If it's so terrible for you, please do yourself a favor and stop watching.
