I think that was part of the schtick being stuck between Forte and Sudeikis singing.
Here's the thing about SNL. Even if it "isn't as good as it used to be" or "is leftist and woke", we need it. We need it to poke fun at our leaders and cut them down to size. Tom Hanks has our friends on the other forum stirred up, so that's a sign it can still do its job.

Yep. They literally recycled the bit with Tom Hanks being scared of shaking Keenan's hand. The first appearance of TH on Black Jeopardy was hilarious while this fell totally flat.
But the problem is they don't do it consistently, thus losing their edge as a program that's willing to make fun of everyone and push the boundaries of comfort. It shouldn't have taken them 4 years of ignoring Biden's weaknesses like an elephant in the room to ask Carvey back on the show to do it right. They severely limited their material and became more of a caricature than a true comedy program that pulls no punches. It's unfortunate, but a sign of the times.torrid said:

No doubt there are a lot of great moments in their 50 year history though.
I just turned on the KPRC (Houston NBC) local news and they apologized for the unintentional mistake last night, and said they are working with NBC to air an encore presentation. Guess they heard from some folks.

Coe appeared in the first episode and intermittently throughout the following decade.
O'Donoghue uttered the first words of the first episode and was a credited cast member for three episodes in the first season. He was also a long time writer for the show.

From the first episode, it seemed to be "here are our star comedians and musicians, plus this entire list of unknown repertory performers". As if they didn't expect any of them to become famous.

I guess "almost skipped" is subjective depending on how much article space you felt was warranted, and I am sure many political sketches and impressions were skipped entirely. But one of the photos at the very top of the article is of Fey playing Palin and "Palin" is mentioned 3 times in the article. The problem is that your measure of comedy success/popularity has drastically changed with the advent of streaming, the internet, Youtube, social media, etc. Just because you do not see newer SNL cast in more traditional mainstream movies now as you would have in the 80s/90s does not mean they are somehow not as funny or not as popular with the general public as before. More and more people especially younger folks have been consuming the majority of their comedy online from non-traditional media outlets to traditional media companies who have now decided to upload their content to Youtube and social media. SNL finally embraced uploading their skits to Youtube after holding off or issuing DCMA takedown request for years.Ag97 said:

I don't think SNL really influenced the perception of Palin. That interview with Katie Couric was a disaster, and everyone knew it. Not Biden debate bad, but still, really bad. Some of the stuff Fey says in the skit are word for word answers that Palin gave in the interview. If anything, I think SNL may have helped her by having Palin come on SNL with Fey. It showed she can take a joke. Something missing from today's political spectrum.

I think the growth of stand up comedy also factors in. It used to be that a comic had to go tv, and then hopefully jump to the movies. Now, relatively mid tier comics get specials on Netflix and can make a decent amount of money. They don't need TV anymore.

The real omission is Chris Farley as Newt Gingrich. His impression made such an impact at the time that Gingrich actually invited him to come do the act in Washington for the Republican caucus.
