If I remember right in the most recent Wax & Wayne book he had more of a presence and influence on things.

I've read those. He has some mild influence, but nothing like in Stormlight.

Yea maybe influence was the wrong wording. More explicit presence.

Spoilers from the cosmere:

He explains it pretty well why in his letters in the Stormlight epigraphs. Odium has destroyed three shards and was looking to destroy the rest. The only one as antagonistic is Autonomy, and she has basically been unsuccessful thus far. I would say you see Hoid having a similar amount of influence accordingly.

I've only read a couple pages.

Though I did get notice that my physical book had already shipped, which was surprising given how long the other 2 books took to ship. I think I only got the second physical book a couple weeks ago.

Just got my physical copy of SP3, but still haven't had a chance to read SP2 yet. I have to say I've been very impressed with the quality of the print books.

I believe McCarthy and Sanderson to be the first and second best American authors alive, respectively.

I'm about halfway through the audiobook, and I'm regretting not buying a physical copy for all the artwork that is mentioned in the book.

I am enjoying this one much more than SP2, and I would say even more than SP1. It starts off with a similar Princess Bride kind of feel as Tress, but it feels more mature as the book goes on. I know he wrote these primarily for his wife and to explore how to write in Hoid's voice, and I'm nothing but excited now for his origin series. Edit: I feel like this one is even more cosmere aware, with one particularly great cameo.

I read or saw somewhere that this was the most liked of the 4 books he wrote. I'm looking forward to getting into it more.

Based on the premises, I'm most excited for the next one, but I feel like this is going to be a great addition to the Cosmere. Excited to see more of it.

I burned through it the past couple days. Man what a rollercoaster of emotion.

Not your typical Cosmere book, but interesting with a lot of references to the other books, especially Stormlight.

Without getting into actual plot points, I felt that SP3 benefitted greatly by having 2 viewpoints. You get the good Sanderson Slide where multiple layers come together in the conclusion.

Tress was missing that, which made it only okay. I really liked the setting of that one.

And the artwork is pretty magnificent in the hard copy. The cover even caught my wife's eye just for how good it looked.

I have not read any of the Stormlight books but I did purchase Way of Kings like 5 years ago or maybe more with the vague notion of this being a series I'd like to get into at some point. It has been sitting on my bookshelf because I found out it wasn't close being done, and I didn't want to get into another series that doesn't have the finish line in sight (a la ASOIAF) or a 10+ book epic that can't tell a succinct beginning-to-end story (a la WOT).

It looks like the first 5 books will be wrapped next year and there are some novellas interspersed, so my question is, will the 5 plus whatever else be a complete enough story to enjoy, or will all 10+ books be required to tell the entire thing?

This is based on the wiki entry:
Quote:

Ten books are planned in the series, broken down into two sets of five books each. Sanderson describes the planned story arc of the second set of five books as a "sequel" to the first set, with some appearances of characters from the first set.

From his stuff I've read that wiki entrance seems accurate to what I remember. Here's a section from his last Stormlight update on Reddit.

Quote:

My intention is that once this is done, we'll have another longer-than-normal gap as I turn my attention to Mistborn Era Three (and hopefully the Elantris sequels) before diving back in to do the back five Stormlight books. From there, I'm hoping to return to a 3-year gap between books until we push to the ending at book ten.

Have you read anything else in Sanderson's Cosmere? Essentially there are multiple book series that exist in the same universe. I imagine a good part of the main plotlines will be resolved to some degree after book 5, but that a lot of the "meta-plot" might be unresolved (I think getting into anything more than that would be a bit spoilery). I also recall reading that the time gap between the two "arcs" is only a decade or so.

He's also a machine of a writer. He wants to complete his "Cosmere", and is willing to sacrifice a lot of other things he wants to write for the purposes of doing so (he's the anti-GRRM in this regard, who will find any excuse to not finish Winds of Winter)

He has a constant stream of books and some of the gaps in here are when he was writing other non Cosmere related novels. As others have said he has shifted nearly all of his attention to Cosmere of which Stormlight is only a third of the overall story.

Even if something happens to him, he has a fullblown company with fellow writers that could probably carry something on.

While some may say his "quality" is not to the highs of GRRM or Rothfuss, he more than makes up for it in a healthy balance of quantity and quality. And certainly not to the level of trash that you see litter Amazon with books pumped out month after month

I'd say his quality is higher than GRRM and Rothfuss. First, he's still a writer, not a former writer. Second, he doesn't write like either a food-obsessed shock jock or a horny teenager writing cosplay porn. Third, he doesn't **** on his fans.

I mean for me personally his writing is way more enjoyable than most so that is all that matters for me

Thanks for the responses. Sounds like I have plenty to keep me occupied from his works.

I recently picked up The Belgariad and rereading those. Way of Kings may be next unless I finish off The Mallorean. Maybe the others by Eddings too. Been along time since I've read any of them.

I love the Elenium and the Tamuli from David Eddings. Such great stories, and Sparhawk, Kalten and Kurik were awesome characters.

Ill add that so far, Sanderson's arcs have been good enough to stand on their own as fulfilling stories. Mistborn era 1 and era 2 are great even if you dont dive into the larger cosmere. I would expect Stormlight 1-5 to feel fairly similar.

Don't forget that just getting through the first 5 books of Stormlight is over 5,000 pages. Then you add in the Novellas and you're easy getting another 1,000 pages.

I think what Sanderson is doing right now is incredible. I really can't think of another author who has attempted something like this with multiple different series being all interconnected, besides Stephen King.

    I much prefer Sanderson though.
