Wow, that was good. I can't wait for RoW.

And I've read Dawnshard. If you don't read it before RoW, there will be a lot of surprises, if it takes place at all before RoW.

Good to know. Planning on reading it first.

I'm unsure whether i should start Rhythm of War before reading Dawnshard. I cannot find anything online on when Dawnshard might be released.

On the 17th Shard there was talk that it might not be out for nonbackers until after Rythm of War. I really want to read it prior to reading RoW.

Sanderson's last update on the Kickstarter made it sound like it would be in e-book stores Monday-ish. No print editions for a year maybe
I highly doubt he would not have it released at the same time or before RoW. I have not read it (not a backer), but after reading Edgedancer during my first read of the series in between books, I definitely won't read RoW until I read Dawnshard. Especially since posters on here have been saying it's more relevant and important even than Edgedancer.

This says the 10th. Would line up with what Sanderson has tweeted as it's about a week before RoW. Wouldn't treat it as gospel though.

In the first two books the Lopen kinda annoyed me, but now he may be my favorite character anywhere. He's hilarious, and yet at the end of Oathbringer and here in Dawnshard we see awesome and touching character growth. His moments of ideal swearing followed by actual swearing at deities are the best. Also I'm curious to see what else Rysn has going on besides the heightening. Maybe some allomancy? Little feruchemy?

Yeah, The Lopen is one of my favorites. But i did appreciate how Huio swearing the 3rd ideal before him, made him realize that "protecting those you hate" meant he wasnt as well liked as he thought. Made me feel for the guy, so when his accidental swearing of the 3rd ideal happened, it felt great.

Regarding Rysn, is the implication that there are 4 Dawnshards, with each of them having some sort of tie or effect towards thir respective 4 Shards? Does that mean Rysn, will be able to have the powers of Investiture specific to those 4? If that is the case, which 3 other Shards other than Endowment would be be tied to?

Could you guys put this thread on hold? I want to participate but I've decided to do a re-read starting with WoK.

Thanks!

Yeah, Lopen's conversation with Rui( which by the way it's so awesome that his spren is as weird and awesome as he is) where he's like "how does this ideal work for me when I don't hate anyone?" was great. It showed how the ideal is different for everyone. It's not that he needs to protect those he hates, it's that he hates not being 100% the Lopen all the time , even if toning it down helps him be a better protector.

Dawnshard talk

I love how he was sad there was no image of "Naco" making a rude gesture on his sword, then it magically appeared; that was awesome.

Now we have at least 5 Windrunners of the 3rd ideal. Definitely proving it is the largest of the orders, per our historical records. I mean, that's a pretty powerful force, right there.

Also, forgot to mention when Lopen told the Reshi guy (don't feel like looking up names) not to let his king talk to the other Dustbringers but to talk to Dalinar instead makes me wonder how much they are aware of Taravangian's Dustbringer being the one to let the Parshmen into Urithiru.

Very interesting that we are seemingly getting at least a couple of the orders splitting sides or being politicized.

Going back to the size of the Windrunners, I wonder if Sanderson is backing himself into a bit of a corner. The number of Singers who can use Voidlight seem to be fairly large, but up to this point, they have had their hands full against just one Windrunner. Now we have at least 5 of the 3rd ideal, each with their own squires. That is a force to be reckoned with and could wreak havoc on an enemy army. I wish we knew about how many full Radiants there used to be, at any given time. You have to think that hundreds of these powerful people would completely wreck the enemy forces. Especially once they start getting their plate. The enemy Surgebinders seem like they would get slaughtered against that many wearing full plate.

Based on the conversations in Oathbringer, I always assumed there were hundreds of actual radiants. The only order that seems to be confined is the Bondsmiths, who could only have three. Agreed that the radiants seem to be overpowered when it comes to fighting fused, but another consideration is that if you kill one, Odium just brings them back in a new body. Also, who knows if the "Regals" are even more numerous than the regular fused. And there is nobody outside of maybe Dalinar (or Wit?) close to Odium's level.

Finished Dawnshard and really enjoyed it. Nice to have new cosmere content. Lots to chew on before RoW comes out, but I feel like the big content drops were more cosmere-related than specific to the main Stormlight arc. So I guess I'm saying you don't have to read this before RoW to understand what's going on, but it will help your wider comprehension of everything. Plus, it's got Lopen and Rysn. What's not to love?

I finished Dawnshard and I've also been reading the ROW chapters as they've been released. Dawnshard filled in some holes that I didn't realize were missing, but I wouldn't say it is required reading.
Lathspell
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
I would say it is more required than Edgedancer was. All Edgedancer did was show you why Nale is no longer chasing after people.

Dawnshard literally shows you key moments of certain characters and their character arcs that would be missed if you didn't read it.

Also, though it has Cosmere ramifications, it literally has ramifications on Roshar because it is literally the same power that destroyed the world of the original humans. I'd say that is important since it is literally the entire reveal of the last book. Yes, I used the word "literally" a lot, but it is warranted.

I get it, some people have no problem skipping things, but I could not imagine a world where I would want to skip this story (or any story) if it was chronologically released before another.

Without getting super spoilery since we are only days away from the RoW release, having read the pre-released chapters, I think I can safely say this gets addressed to a pretty solid degree.

RoW Pre-release spoiler Very early it's established that the Singers and Fused have come into the ability to drain stormlight from the Radiants(which is obviously foreshadowed in Dawnshard). Also, despite the Windrunners current #s, they are tapped out, bc they are struggling to find any more Honor Spren that are willing to bond humans.

I agree with you that Dawnshard has a lot of wider Cosmere ramifications, but you could read Rythm of War and not realize that Dawnshard exists. Not reading it wouldn't affect your ability to read and enjoy RoW. Personally I wouldn't skip it, but somebody could if they were so inclined.

I tried to label mine for Dawnshard.

I think we, as a thread group, have stated we aren't posting RoW spoilers until the book is released. Many of us don't want to read the chapters that are released.

I like that my thread turned into the unofficial official Sanderson Stormlight Cosmere thread. I appreciate the spoiler tags! And agreed, nothing on RoW until it's fully released.

I will probably need to ignore this thread for a while, I won't be able to get and finish RoW as quickly as some of y'all can do!

I had always heard one should hold off until you finish all existing Mistborn books before tackling Secret History since it can spoil some stuff from Bands of Mourning.
