Finally just watched Roma. IMO, absolutely not.

Can someone explain to me why Roma is the runaway favorite for best picture? I can't imagine it has anything to do with entertainment value. My gf and I were both bored to tears and were eager to turn it off halfway through. Granted, neither of us have an eye for "artsy" films and cinematography. Was the way in which it was filmed just that spectacular and ground breaking? I'm not trying to bash the film, I'm just curious what I'm missing that is so obvious to everyone else.

I think because it feels so genuine. To the point where it doesn't feel like you're watching a movie, at times. You forget you're seeing actors.

It's almost the antithesis of a big Hollywood movie, which is sort of ironic.

I guess I had that feeling. I just figured it was because nothing of significance was going on, and I was just watching a family go through their mundane day-to-day routines. To be fair, I didn't watch the second half, so I could have missed a lot of the significance.

I think the second half is the strongest.

Within the first hour, there are two huge life events that happen. Everyone doesn't have to like it, but to say that nothing of significance is happening is absolutely wrong. Also I don't think its an "artsy" film. Its not really abstract, and while its shot in black and white, I feel its a pretty straightforward film regarding the plot. I don't think we should label films that are like this "artsy".

I thought his prosthetic teeth were too big. It was a distraction throughout the entire movie for me. Malek even looked like he was uncomfortable during scenes.

I liked it. I have to be in the right mood to watch a movie like that though. It was slow, but I really enjoyed the cinematography.

To each their own. I can understand other people not liking this film as much as I do because for me it felt really personal. Not many people will have the connections to much of this film in that way here in the US so it probably won't be for them. For me, it was 2+ hours of joy. But even at the start when their cleaning the ground, I was entranced because I've seen my grandmother and aunts clean floors like that!

If anyone wants to see how great his cinematography can be in a more action type setting I really recommend Children of Men. One of my favorite sci-fi movies ever and the long shots are legendary.
