How long do you want to ignore this user?
Finally got to see it... Probably my biggest complaint has got to be how freely he seemed to let some people know who he was (the soldier at the end in particular when he told him he grew up in Kansas)... My inner geek would have liked an actual reference to Lana on the bus (was assuming that was her), and maybe to the bully later in the movie being Whitney... But that's just me. oh, and maybe it's just me but the guy is WAY too big to double as this glasses wearing bumbling reporter in disguise

All in all an enjoyable movie and can't wait to see what's in store

I agree Daveintx. I loved this movie but I wanted more of the origin story period. Superman has the best origin story ever, and I needed more time in Smallville with the Kents. I also needed some happy times with Clark on the farm so that we can understand how he grew up to be kind and compassionate.

It will be very interesting to see how the Daily Planet Clark Kent is portrayed in the sequel. Can't wait already.

TCTTS,

I found this quote about shooting the Pa Kent flashback you theorized being "heaven":

quote:
The result of Man of Steel is modern sci-fi with an emotional hook: the first alien contact story. "There's only one high-speed shot in the whole movie, which was shot on film in Panavision, the dreamy flashback of Clark wearing the cape as a kid on the Kent farm," Desjardin concludes.

Calling it a "dreamy" flashback by someone that worked on the film definitely gives validity to the "heaven" theory.

I'd say calling it a flashback gives validity to it being a flashback. Like something that actually happened.

I was thinking the same thing Schmendler.

There was a reference... when the kid and his freaked out mom are sitting in the Kents' living room, the mom says "My son saw what he did. Lana saw it." Or something to that effect. I don't remember the exact wording, but I do remember catching the reference.

Yeah they definitely called her by name in that sequence

A couple more thoughts after seeing MOS again last night:

Superman is an American, and MOS makes no attempt to hide it.
Remember how in Superman Returns, all references to America were swept under the rug? "Does he still stand for truth, justice, and all that stuff?" In MOS, there are flags flying everywhere in Smallville, and even a flag mural on the side of a building. Superman even announces to the military that he is from Kansas, and "can't get more American than that". And thank you Zack Snyder for not portraying the American armed forces as stupid and evil (see Avatar).

Zod is a tragic figure
The fleshing out of this character caught me by surprise, and is one of the strong points of the flawed script. It gives Superman's final decision so much weight. I am more impressed by Shannon's performance after seeing the movie again. Before the final fight, Superman looks at Zod with a mixture of pity and sympathy. He has chosen to save Earth over Krypton at this point, but knows that he may have to commit genocide on his own people to do it. Powerful stuff I thought.

Just saw it finally. 7.5/10. Thought it could have been better, but some parts were very well done. Think it could have been two movies, and Zod showing up was quick.

Wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it but we still laughed about some of the stupid writing decisions. I usually don't care about such things because I get to see so few movies these days that I mostly suspend my jugemental side. However, since this is such a polarizing film I will throw out my opinions as well:

I am absolutely sick and tired of shaky cam filming technique. Can we stop that already?

Did not enjoy Lois Lane in this film. Preferred if they just did a reboot without her. Almost everything about her inclusion in this movie was non-sensical...
(1) why in the hell is a reporter allowed on site to what would have been a top secret govt/military installation investigating a potential UFO buried in ice?! Oh, that's right. It's on Canadian soil so the US govt is required to let her in. WTF.
(2) how is a reporter able to beat genetically bred warriors from another planet to the trigger?! Stupid.
(3) Lois is able to scale ice on side of cliff in weather we are just told is 40 degrees below freezing without any face protection or equipment. Crap, there is your Supergirl right there!

The handful of light hearted moments were extremely awkward and forced either due to poor writing and/or timing.

Again, we enjoyed it but those points were eye-rolling.

Agree. The shaky camera was annoying, especially in 3D.

Those are some great beans, ArchAg. Makes me super-excited for the sequel.

I saw it this weekend. My take is that it was a good movie. Way better than any of the previous Superman movies. Those were cheesy as hell in comparison. Far better than any of the transformer movies. I'd put it below Dark Knight but in the same ballpark as the other 2 batman movies.

Yeah I remember watching Superman the Movie and Superman II a few years ago and thinking that they don't hold up as well 30 years later. Superman was due to be modernized and MOS did a good job of it.

Been asking for this since Blair Witch....which was the one and only movie whre it was appropriate. Everything else since then..not so much.

I believe the shaky camera trick was entirely appropriate for the D-Day invasion of Saving Private Ryan.

The shaky cam thing in SPR was not nearly as bad as the crap that is so prevelant in movies today.

Hell, in the Bourne movies the cam shakes when we walks down the street...it's like they had no budget for a home made stedi-cam....effing stupid!
