But if he turns it down to "stay with his boy Vinny", this show is offically gayer than Piven's shirts.

Bingo, and the writers have to understand this. I'm betting he takes the job, has a big blow up, and is back at Miller Gold within the season.

If he takes the job, it will be no different than the episodes where Vince got a new agent. I think that regardless, Ari is Vinces agent by the beginning of next season one way or the other.

Also...How realistic is it for someone with Dana's credentials to run a studio?

She was at Warners for 10 years (according to her this episode) and was Alan's #2. Arent those the ideal credentials?

Not saying they aren't...But in real life, would someone with those credentials be on the short list?

I'm only asking because earlier people were questioning whether or not Ari would qualify in the real world.

i think when its all said and done, he'll turn down the job.....not for Vince....but ultimately for Jeffrey Tambor.

From this thread
quote:
It wouldn't totally unrealistic for a big power broker like Ari to be offered a gig like that. Paramount chief Brad Grey (who, as 20ag07 pointed out on the last page, is one of the inspirations for Alan Grey) was a talent manager before becoming a producer and eventually a studio head. In baseball, Jeff Moorad was one of the game's biggest power brokers and agents before becoming head of the Arizona Diamondbacks organization.

Reading is tough.

As Alan's former #2 and with a history in development, she would certainly qualify and be on the short list. She was heavily involved in the development of Aquaman, the biggest grossing film of all time.

The reason I question the realism of Ari getting the offer is he has no experience developing projects. He can put his clients in projects, but he hasn't show any particular gift of even selecting good projects. The only films he had any hand at all in developing were Medellin, which was a trainwreck, and Clouds. He was responsible for bringing Walsh into the fold, which resulted in the "Clouds" to "Silo" cluster that never even got made. So, I would not say his track record is anywhere near good enough for him to be handed the reins of the largest studio in town.

A good example of this kind of career path is Ben Silverman. Silverman was an agent at William Morris, who then advanced to head of the agency's international division. He founded the production company Reveille, which brought The Office and Ugly Betty to the respective networks, along with a host of reality shows including The Biggest Loser. He was then hired as the head of NBC.

For someone to get put in charge of a studio's billions of dollars of budgeting greenlighting power, they would have to prove that they can produce by bringing projects to studios through a production arm.

This being the key.

Rudy, that has nothing to do with what I asked. What you quoted was describing Ari...I asked about Dana. They have different resumes, obviously. My point was to look at her credentials and the likely hood that she could get that job in the real world. The above poster did a good job of answering. Thanks for your valuable insight though.

Like someone said, Ari will not take the studio head job and will pass it on to Dana. That's the only reason she was even in the episode, and it was even reiterated in the preview.

That was an epic episode: Ari &g John, Jeffrey Tamboor acting like a maniac, Lloyd freaking out, Babs acting like Babs, Ari & his wife & Dana, Vince & Natasha, Vince & the fashion guy Eric & the model that wants him to manage her, Drama behaving in classic inept Drama fashion.

That might be one of my all-time favorite episodes, because it's exactly what I like to see: Hollywood wheeling and dealing with good times and T&A in the background.

That wasn't even close to my all time favorite episode, the Vegas episode is by far the best one in my opinion.

Yeah, Vegas might be the best episode. Between Drama sending off blatant homosexual signals to the masseuse, Seth Green picking a fight with E, Ari losing his mind at the blackjack tables before Vinny manages to win their money back, and the finale fight between the guys and Seth's posse, that was an epic episode from beginning to end.

very good episode...Ari won't turn down the studio job just for Vince...will he?? Him taking it is good for both of them

I understand not wanting to lose Ari, but seriously, Ari will be in a position to better help Vince and his career. Hell he may not even need an agent when he deals with Ari. He'll get Smoke jumpers, he'd get that Ramones flick he'd nail. I mean this is gift wrapped for everyone involved.

i was genuinely sad when vince said the line about finish what we started...

quote:
The finish what we started line is going to be the one that keeps Ari from taking the job. You could see it in his eyes. And the previews for next week make it look like he takes the job, so that just convinced me even more that he is going to turn it down. They are trying to surprise the audience.

I was to then I got to thinking...where would the finish be? I mean your agent is with you for a long time. Where is this finish that Vince speaking of? An Oscar? A star on the Hollywood walkway? Simply another movie? Ari can't wait that long, especially if he can directly affect all of those supposed finishes from the head of a studio position.

quote:
My guess: Ari turns down the job, recommends Dana Gordon. Dana Gordon is forever indebited to Ari, therefore, Vince can do whichever movie he wants with that studio.

Great spin. I never thought of that. That would help both Vince and Ari out, and with all the movies that'll get thrown Vince's way Ari won't be hurting for cash on commission.

watched it last night. The return of Dana Gordon, to me, meant she will get the job and Ari will turn it down. He'll probably make a deal for Smoke Jumpers/Ramones AND maybe something for Drama or something like that.

Vince/Ari actor/agent is what has MADE this show. Even though it would seemingly be the "perfect" scenario for both Ari and vince(he'd get any movie he ever wanted from here on out)...it won't happen. Dana gets the big job and hooks them up.

just read DiscoStu's post. My thoughts exactly. Right when Dana made her appearance, the wheels were in motion for this. I'm sure we'll see TONS of good Ari/Dana fight scenes for him pushing Vince for projects that the other side doesn't want him to work on, and some power struggles between the 2 of them. I'd say the deal will be for Smoke Jumpers AND the Ramones.

A. I agree with Dr. K.

B. I think Ari will take the job, and hire Dana as his #2. This will go on for a couple of weeks, but things between Dana and Ari will cause problems with Ari's wife. Ari will step down at the end of the season to save his marriage and recommend Dana.

I think the greatness of Piven was really on display in the airport scene. Just his eyes and his facial expressions while talking to Vince told you exactly how long a flight it was going to be for him to Switzerland.

I thought this was a great episode of television, though not necessarily what I normally consider a great episode of Entourage. It wasn't particularly funny or anything, but it was a unique form of quality. Also, for show that uses music brilliantly on a regular basis, 'Fake Plastic Trees' was spot on perfect for the closing scene.

So one of the very first Entourages was just on HBO-C....I didn't realize it, but back then they actually lasted 29-30 minutes. Lately they are 24-26 minutes it seems. It always seems to end and there are 5 minutes of commercials before the next show...What gives?
20ag07
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Some are longer, some are shorter. From a writing perspective, that has always been one of the benefits of being on HBO. On networks, episodes are typically within a minute length of each other due to commercial quotas, timeslot flow, etc. The story has always dictated the length of the episode on HBO- you wont's see a few extra minutes of fat or any hillarious deleted scenes dropped in order to hit the magical 22:30 sitcom length.

It's even more noticeable on the drama side- The Sopranos was anywhere between 50 and 60 mins long and swung wildly in that frame. It's not an issue of HBO scaling back the show to do more ads (as the networks have consistently scaled back the time for their shows)...nothing worth noting airs after Entourage, so HBO isn't getting a lot of mileage out of those ads.

Hmm..Maybe I just happened to see one of the 30 minute ones then and even then some were 24-25. Never thought of it that way though.
