Gohomeleg (or any other informed poster) - why are they saying the plane traveled in the north arc or the south arc? They're obviously two opposite paths
I don't know anymore than anyone else watching coverage of the missing plane. Maybe an electrical or aerospace engineer could explain it. The arc is from a hit a single satellite got on the airplane. If they had one or two more satellites ping the plane, they could pinpoint the location.

Satellite ping. The satellite can tell which angle the last transmission came from, which is basically finding the point on a circle around the satellite. So, the red arc they show is the further on either side of that arc that the place could be based on the time/place of its last known location.
TDOA-FDOA Geolocation or another variant if they were lucky.

Maybe it's because I'm hormonal but it REALLY pisses me off that so many jokes have come of this. I can't imagine being the wife of one of those passengers and waking up every morning not knowing whether or not my husband was alive.
It's really sad how much things like this don't shake us up more.

This is what ive been thinking lately. Except I think it was accidentally shot down and theyre covering it up and simultaneously using it as a distraction from ukraine and Syria.
Or we diverted the plane to Diego Garcia.

This is what I've assumed all along. Once they finish painting the new 777 to look like MH370, they'll intentionally dump it and someone will find it a few days later.
My uncle works for freescale. He has been flown to Malaysia twice since 2012

Several reasons. I just don't do well with long haul flying. I felt tired all the time. I never was able to sleep very well in Narita. I got kidney stones flying that plane too. I was getting dehydrated. I starting passing 5 about half way between Tokyo and DFW. That was a very bad experience. And reason number one is I just didn't want to fly FO anymore. It's a great airplane with great people flying it. I'm just needed a break from the MD80 for a couple of years and got it.
This thread is really long and I haven't looked through the whole thing, so please excuse if this has already been said. One of the passengers has a son currently at Texas A&M and in the Corps of Cadets. His other son graduated a few years ago from A&M. This hits close to home for us Aggies. Please keep the family in your thoughts. And keep jokes off of this thread out of respect.

This is pretty cool. There's a crowd sourcing project called Tomnod that allows you to go through recent sat photos and analyze them for wreckage. About 24 hours ago, guy on Reddit finds something that would match the size of a plane, and the water has a color differential possibly indicating fuel. The area is in the Malacca Strait. 8 hours or so later, reports come out that the Malacca Strait is getting vessels from China, Singapore and Indonesia to investigate.
