No one know reb. What's even more bizarre is that the Chinese had these photos on Sunday and didn't release them until today

They think china found it on satellite and it's closer to normal route and would squash the whole turning around thing. Guys on communist news network don't think Chinese finding is the plane.

Images were taken on Sunday. It takes time to scour all photos...these things can't be spotted instantly.

I'm wondering where "Big Data" is on all of this. Silicon valley has been obsessive about cloud processing and storage to solve all kinds of problems...if there was an application in place that could accurately analyze photographs with massive resolutions, and scale that up by throwing the juice of your server farms behind it...who knows, it should theoretically be able to locate what you are looking for far faster than physically traveling over it. Seems like a missed opportunity here, which is unfortunate for the families of the missing who are still wondering what the hell is going on over the past 5 days.

yes reb,, except China.

What part of that plane would be 72'x79'? That's the dimensions given. Nearly a square. Seems odd.

fuselage + some of the wings

or some of the wings + some of the fuselage

Why would you have to get permission from china to get the necessary data input (that being, highly detailed satellite images of the ocean)? The biggest obstacles to that seem more likely to be cloud cover and availability of satellites to do the work.

It's China

It's their satellite, isn't it?

It's not like the SEC has a big ol satellite floating over the potential crash area.

They do things differently over there. You can't impose American "we can find them!" efforts on other cultures.
reb,

Well, I just presumed we had satellites in the neighborhood because, like you said: It's China.

And dozens of countries and groups are pitching in on this hunt, including us, so I'll just concede my ignorance of how they do things over there I guess.

yet we found the air France one within a day or so.

The area for the Air France jet was about 5% the size of the area of this jet. Two completely different situations as the area for this jet is literally where ever they had fuel to get to. Air France pilots actually stayed on the transmitter right up until the crash. Something that didn't happen here.

Where are you reading that Rolls Royce has info on the engines?

It was stated on CNN today that RR tracks all that data and is working with authorities to help locate the engines.

China doesn't big data?

RR downloads engine data after flight. They don't stream in real time. Friend is an IT exec at RR.

I don't know sht either reb,, but it's also not an American airline.

You can't expect the NSA to be bothered enough to stop from spying on Congress AND the domestic proletariat can you?

The prime directive of the American Dictocracy is to keep the funding and expand.

That doesn't exactly scream, "Let's go find that crashed airplane in Malaysia."

IF they find the jet close to the original flight path this is no excuse. we'll have to wait and see

You don't think they used some kind of data intelligence here?
reb,

Even if it is pretty much impossible to get it done with this plane, a forward-thinking executive would see an opportunity to showcase the benefits of big data to solve life or death problems, not just business ones. This won't be the last plane (or boat or whatever) that goes missing.

Anyway, ill stop derailing. Was just a thought that came to mind.

I agree with you, reb,. I have people working on an app right now. Too late to save those people, I know.

I just gotta sell the Find My Plane app to all the carriers now.

I think you're going to have a really, really, really tough time getting any government with access to high res, near real time, full coverage imagery to turn that stuff over to be analyzed by some 3rd party company, no matter how noble the cause.

Haven't read entire thread, so don't know if someone has mentioned it, but why don't they invent a floatable GBS beacon that can be put in planes and will automatically eject and activate if sensors touch water or plane comes to a sudden stop/impact (like an airbag)? They could put them on top and bottom of the plane, so depending on how the plane sits, at least one can eject free of the wreckage.

A GBS beacon?
I think it's already been invented; look up grindr

it's invented and on newer planes if ordered. not on older 5+ year old planes i think. unless retrofitted.

All commercial fishing boats carry at least one EPIRB. It is similar to what yall are proposing for airplanes.

You can trigger it manually. They wouldn't be practical for airplane. EPIRBs can also automatically start pinging when they become disengaged from cradle. That happens when they go underwater for a bit.

EPIRB broadcasts lat/long and specific number that corresponds to that vessel.

While it would be handy in this instance, I don't think it happens very often. There aren't many instances of a plane disappearing. Nearly has to be over water, no communication working off radar, etc.

Go look at @mpoppel's timeline right now

"@mpoppel: WSJ sources: US investigators pursuing theory that missing airliner was diverted "with the intention of using it later for another purpose"

@mpoppel: WSJ: Report that missing airliner flew 4 more hours based on data automatically sent to ground from aircraft's engines"
