Totally agree AND I think this will be the first of many.

I don't think it's a fluke. She's close to top 100 which gives her auto entry (technically top 104) into all grand slams. She's serving better and going for more winners off the ground.

Can't wait to see her play Eala.

She won the American Collegiate Player Wildcard Playoffs. That how Bennett + Esposito got their doubles wildcard.

Funny enough, it looks as if Violeta is friends with Eala. The tennis connections are crazy. Small world. I believe Mary has a chance in this match if she plays well. I think she will need to get to the net a lot.

How many people can say their first main draw match in a grand slam is on center court and at prime time against arguably the most famous players in the sport currently?

Amazingly (or strangely), Carson played #1 Sabalenka on Wimbledon's No. 1 Court.

So, both Mary and Carson will have the same experience playing on the 2nd biggest stadium on the grounds.

At Wimbledon, it is Centre Court --> No. 1 Court.

At the US Open, it is Arthur Ashe --> Louis Armstrong.

If Mary was playing anyone besides Eala, I would be inclined to agree with you re crowd support. But Eala has a tremendous following with several US players saying it is like playing on foreign soil even when facing Eala in the states. I hope you are right though.

Agree. Ticket prices doubled on that court as soon as Eala was announced to play there.

Get an early lead and take the crowd out of it!

No sugar coating it, Mary played poorly in that 1st set. She doesn't look like she is concentrating, just playing rec tennis. Like she isn't ready for the stage.

Hopefully she turns it around a bit.

A couple of announcer comments from the broadcast to the effect of:

  • she is playing too cavalierly
  • now is not the time to be giggling with your coach (as it happened quite a bit)
I haven't seen Mary play since she left here but it just seemed off.

Tough match but great accomplishment to play in her first slam main draw.

Lots of lessons to build on and hope she enjoyed the moment.

Not sure if she could have drawn a tougher matchup.

That was an unbelievably poor match for Mary, didn't even look like the Game plan was good. Just looked like she was going for way too much and tons of errors. Hopefully this is just the beginning, I am really rooting for her. I was so excited to watch with my daughter tonight

Throw everything you know out the window for tennis. I honestly don't think the 5 year thing applies for tennis. It's an absolute joke.

Great experience for her, and I'm sure a bit overwhelming as well. I do think it will take some time for Mary to find her footing until she favors her strengths. Had 3 quality wins in qualies.

Needs a bit more pop on her serve and has to transition into the net more to finish off points (especially against these big hitters). She doesn't really have the consistency in her groundstrokes, or enough movement on them for that to be a strength of hers right now. From what we can see, her strengths are her athleticism, scrambling ability, creativity, hands at the net, and tennis IQ. Use more of the court and muck it up for them a bit.

What's interesting about that to me, is she was known for her consistency and outworking people in college. Just goes to show the difference between college and how deep the professional game is.

Agree. She just does not have the game to outhit the big hitters. Eala is too consistent and dialed in for her. Most of the top 50 will be the same. Carson has the game to hit with and outhit girls but doesn't have some of the intangibles that Mary has. To me, Carson has a huge upside if she would dial in and give it her all for the next 3-5 years. Injuries have limited her training. To win 2 qualifying matches and come within one set of the main draw of the US Open after being out injured (no match play) for 8 months. Insane.

I'd love to see Mary pair with a really good doubles player and find some success on tour in doubles, too.

They are still extremely successful, though. Great ambassadors for our school! Will be cheering them on for sure!

Mary had a tough match.

I think it's important to point out Eala is playing top 10 tennis and is a horrible matchup for Mary's game. Mary's game plan was uber aggressive playing to win. Didn't work as we all saw.

Mary looked incredible in her Q3 win.

Point is the opponent had a lot to do with what we saw. Most WTA players do not have Eala's game.

Mary is up to #113 in the live rankings. She's been steadily moving up since graduation. I don't think we've ever had an A&M women's player in the top 100?

9 more spots and she gets direct entry into all the slams.

If she can settle in at 50-100 and maintain it, she will have an incredible career.
