I was out of town and catching bits and pieces this weekend....what happened to Perez?, why was he so far back at the start?
I think I heard Red Bull switched out power units on both cars after issues during qualifying. Max started at 10.
Checo had a laptime incorrectly deleted in Q2 and messed with qualy strategy and only finished P11. RedBull got lucky that Max's engine failed during Q3 and not during race.

Just finished the race. Surprised to see Max get the win from 10th but Ferrari continued screw-ups make it easier to move up.

Starting to think Ricciardo is suffering just as much for McLaren's strategy call as he is from a bad car.
Alpine was going to offer Alonso a one year deal then force him off to sprotscars. In that context, seems like a no brainer to take the multi year deal, but this team has been heading backwards under Stroll despite a lot more capital invested...
Must be frustrating for the owner to know that no matter how much you sink into that team your gimp son will always hold it back

AMs new F1 factory and wind tunnel campus will be really nice. I think the factory will be available before the 2023 season and the wind tunnel is supposed to be available beginning summer of 2023. This is where a lot of money has been allocated so my guess is the 2023 and beyond cars will be improvements above what AM has for 2022. I think the current facilities have been pretty much unchanged since the Jordan days. AM currently has to use Mercs wind tunnel so with a new factory and their own wind tunnel they can move away from having to use outsourced parts and development. It's tough being a Merc customer and if AM can get that down to just engine then it's probably a pretty big win for them.
Usually it takes an extra year for those advances to start paying dividends in development. I would guess that in 2024 you will start to see AM improve.
That Alpine seat has to go to Oscar Piastri now. Fernando leaving came as a surprise.

There's rumors that piastri has a "pre-agreement" with McClaren whatever that means. Should be a fun break time with driver seat moves at least.
Regarding the Ferrari strategy issues: it's not that long ago that Red Bull could do nothing right when it came to race strategy. Didn't have the dominant car so that is a difference, but everything from tire choice to pit strategy to car set up put them at a decent disadvantage to Merc when they had opportunities for race wins. At times it was brutal to watch, but they fixed those problems for 2021 and 2022 (so far).
Yep. And if it wasn't poor strategy, it was bad pit stops where a wheel falls off as they left the pit lane. Or Max and Danny wrecking into each other, taking one or both cars out of the race.
I'm pretty sure they had it together before 20 and 21 though as far as that kind of thing. They didn't luck their way into Max getting P3 behind Hamilton and Bottas. They could have had P2 in the constructors if they would have left Gasley. They were punching above their weight in 19 and 20. In 18 they still only had the third best car and finished on par.
Ferrari has arguably the best car and can't stop stepping on their Johnson's. Doesn't really feel the same as the RB struggles.

What makes it funner is that apparently Piastri's contract expired on the 31, but the contract is more about when he can start talking to other teams. Fernando waited until the 1st to let them know, now Piastri is in talks with McLaren as well. This is such an Alonso thing to do and I don't doubt it at all lol

Hearing the Alpine motorsport boss Laurent Rossi and Alonso have had issues. Alonso did Piastri a solid favor there, under the surface. Piastri was set for a seat at Williams, now Piastri has his pick of McLaren or Alpine. Although I'd see this as a long shot, if Hamilton does decide to retire at the end of the year, Piastri may come out of this brilliantly.
