Gotta say, the movie itself of course looks fantastic, but on first impression, that sure is a weirdly-paced trailer. Something about it just feels off...
is it not showing up for anyone else?
Found it on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0k3kHtyoqc&feature=player_embedded and I agree that the pacing was peculiar.
It's mainly just the first 35 seconds or so that come across as badly edited. Almost like a clip reel with all the quick, abrupt music changes. But once the elves start singing, it's a pretty great trailer.

For someone who hasn't read the book in about a decade, can you refresh me on why Bilbo was chosen?
I can't believe we have to wait a whole year for this... It feels like I've been waiting for this since the last movie came out... I need my LOTR fix!

In the books (*SPOILERS* if you haven't read them) Bilbo is chosen as a thief, though I forget why exactly because he had zero training as one.

I always thought the original LOTR trailers felt "off" as well.
My guess is they had to make do with just over half of the movie shot, so they had to use quick cuts in the teaser. Still was awesome though. Can't believe how long it's been since rotk.
As for the Bilbo question, Thorin needed a thief and Gandalf suggested Bilbo because he's small, but also more adventurous than the average Hobbit due to his Took heritage. Wikipedia "The Quest of Erebor" for a fuller explanation.

Who the heck is Gandalf fighting 1 on 1 there? I love hearing the dwarves sing. Reminds me of having the old Hobbit record from the animated movie when i was a kid.

To show my complete and utter dorkiness, "where there's a whip" is from the Return of the King Cartoon. A funny part during the song is when the goblins are marching.. you see this one goblin with really long horns coming out of his head and the next one looks like a country bumpkin.

Yeah Bilbo was chosen because he was adventurous for a Hobbit as already stated. Hobbits were also unknown to Smaug. Gandalf gambled that Bilbo wouldn't set off the dragon's dwarf radar like a, well, dwarf would.
I can't figure out where Gandalf would have been walking through ruins like he was in that trailer

As someone who hasn't read any of the books and loved the LOTR movie trilogy, I have to admit that trailer doesn't make me too excited. I'm guessing it's meant more for people who know the books and the characters and are happy to see them finally represented on screen.
That trailer should have just started with the singing.
I just don't see how someone can claim to have loved the LOTR movies and yet never read the Hobbit.
