No masks, 100% open effective next Wed.

Seems a bit early IMO.
because it is too early. More people need to be vaccinated first.

I know this isn't what people want to hear but Abbott's order could undo a lot of the progress we've made.
The progress on case counts, hospitalizations, or deaths?

Because if most of the most the 1a and 1b groups have been vaccinated, then case counts can go up, but hospitalizations and deaths, in theory, shouldn't rise to critical levels.
In theory, yes. But we're nowhere near herd immunity yet. We're racing against the variants to get as many people vaccinated as possible.

Are you glad the state is reopening to 100%, Larry?

Yeah it's a fine line here in the RGV. Most people know somebody who either died or nearly died from covid. We were hit hard in the summer. I don't wanna piss off my employees by taking down our signs too soon but I certainly don't think the non N95s protect us even 50%.

EDIT: I love that Abbott opened things back up. The hopitalization rate and vaccinations support it 100%.

Our firm uses a shared office space, a la wework. I wonder what my office space will ask of the various tenants. I'm guessing they will move to masks preferred in hallways, bathrooms, elevator other public spaces for now and update the wording on the makeshift signage to 'suggested.'

I want to return to normal life just as much if not more than you. I check the covid numbers daily and have been very happy the past few weeks seeing cases go down and thinking we could have a normal summer. But if we get impatient and just start living normally and gathering in big groups again it could undo a lot of the progress we've made. I just want to avoid that.

The people that pushed these draconian and terrible policies need to be rubbed in it a little bit. They ruined businesses and people's careers and lives. For nothing. It didn't do a damn thing to save any lives.

Maybe it's childish, but it's damn sure deserved.

So stay home and take care of your family. High BMI people and older people. Stay in the bubble.

But those vaccinated and those who are healthy need to live. Save businesses, go watch a movie, go have a beer, go to a concert, etc.

Enough is enough

As you said in your last line, can't keep living your life in fear. The current state of the world is not sustainable, even if the numbers go up.

Because if most of the most the 1a and 1b groups have been vaccinated, then case counts can go up, but hospitalizations and deaths, in theory, shouldn't rise to critical levels.
The issue at that point is that if it starts spreading significantly through younger populations would be risk for mutation, putting the 1a and 1b potentially at risk again. Would have preferred to get more people vaccinated first, but not my call.

We will see an increase in cases locally, simply due to the fact that a lot of our morbidly obese 50-70 year-olds have been refusing the vaccine because "I ain't got no diseases." That was going to be a given regardless of when we reopened. Many of these were already hitting up the bars and restaurants so whatever.

If the hospitalization rate stays down, I'm happy.

Definitely think we'll see most large chain businesses with signs "highly suggesting" you wear a mask. Not sure they would put their employees in a position to tell people to leave if they don't.

I can see businesses continuing to require them and individuals that will never give them up.

That's fine. No problem and no judgement.

I was finally going to go to the grocery store for the first time in a year. Now not so sure. Will have to see if others grant me social distance and at least the store people continue to mask. I have had both shots, but they are only 95 percent effective. I am high risk.

Covid is endemic now. If this is how you feel then you probably will never feel safe anyway.

Also, putting "only" in front of the 95% is just sad.

Nobody in the vaccine trials of Moderna or Pfizer were hospitalized or died. That includes old people and high risk. Just something to think about as you make your choices.

I don't mean to sound petty, but you are really letting fear overcome you. The vaccine is 95% effective against getting the virus, but near 100% effective in preventing serious illness. If you want to wear a mask I understand, but you should not live in fear of covid any longer.

This is satire, right? 95% against catching it, but way higher at preventing serious illness and death.

At the very least we should have made sure grocery store and restaurant workers were vaccinated prior to lifting the mask requirements. They are exposed to so many people every day and now they will be maskless and they wont have vaccine access, at least not yet.
