Looks like I'm going to get to see a lot of SEC pitching here in Kansas City. Singer and Kowar to the Royals in the first round.

Quick glance shows that Florida (likely) loses 3 recruits in the first round, A&M and Miss St 2 recruits each. Vandy, TCU, Louisville, Kansas, North Carolina, Arizona, LSU, Miami one each.

Vandy, Louisville, Ole Miss take hits in the Sandwich rounds, Texas and Baylor early in the 2nd. Florida, Clanga, and Ole Miss with more kids off the board.

Alek Thomas, a football/baseball recruit for TCU goes at #63... Be interesting to see if he makes it to Ft. Worth. His Dad is the S&C coach for the White Sox.

Not too sure where to post this question, but I've tried to google a few questions I have. Why is it allowed to draft these guys from HS? I know many other sports have put in a minimum age (usually out of 2 or 3rd year before they're eligible). Also, how do these bonuses work? If you go high enough in the draft and get a decent amount of money, you're chances of playing in the big leagues is pretty slim still, do you still keep the money you were drafted with? Thanks for the answers, just always blows my mind kids out of HS are making this big decision without a guarantee they will play in the MLB.

As a Rockies fan, I truly hope Kilkenny goes back to school. They are so bad at developing pitchers.

Luken should be gone . With injuries the last 2 seasons ..... he simply cannot take another chance .... although he would be a top 30 talent next year .

No way Helman comes back . Coleman will be back for sure ..... Kolek might return unless he shows something down the stretch.

I would not be surprised if someone took a flyer on Janca and gave him a shot at pitching. He has the frame and a howitzer for a right arm.
Janca as a pitcher.....the second coming of "Wild Thing." His nickname could be "airmail."

Kids can have their name physically excluded from the draft if they want, but very few do that. Being drafted does not void their amateur eligibility. They can talk to take and even negotiate on contracts and still choose to go to college. I personally think MLB has it exactly right in the draft structure.

Their slot value assignment ($) doesn't mean that is how much money they will receive. They can choose to take less, but if they get more then slot value it triggers additional limitations for teams.

MLB contracts, including bonuses, are fully guaranteed unlike the NFL. So as long as you don't retire/quit you get the money even if you never make it above A ball. I think it is very hard for a kid to turn down generational money but some do it.

Here's a pretty good MLB Draft 101 type link.

Jorge Gutierrez is having a decent year at Alvin Community College. He could be a late round target, but he will play at Lamar University in 2019 if undrafted instead of returning to the Aggies after being ruled academically ineligible for 2018.
Bummer.

Aren't there rules against someone playing 12 years of college ball?

I think he meant, given that he's 5'9, 175#, that even in the BigXII there is a serious likelihood he could get injured.

...and while he CAN sign the contract and still play football, I'd be shocked if there isn't a medical out clause on behalf of the A's that if he suffers an injury they don't have to pay him.

I'm sure the Murray's will take out a huge insurance policy to cover any injury, but it's still a big risk of future earnings.

He seems to have a chip on his shoulder to prove he can play college football...sounds like Lincoln promised him the starting job (sound familiar?)

Stupid doesn't leave just because you cross the Red River.

Something smells about this whole deal. When did he learn how to hit?

Prediction: career .150 hitter.... in the minor leagues.

That is great for him. From someone who wasn't projected to do much at TAMU to a change in delivery to at possible mid six figure payday

I'll miss him. Was hoping we could sneak him back on campus for one more year. I'm curious who will step up as the closer next year. I can't think of anyone off the top of my head who would translate well into that role.

We're in trouble at closer next year. Good for Hoff though. He's earned it.

Rob had to be expecting Hoffman to likely leave with the season he had. I'm sure he'll figure it out. Either a juco guy or one of the lefties. We have four potential lefty starters, which is a load, I can see moving one of them to closer (not Dox though, he was dominant his last two starts).

Basically every college team is "in trouble" at closer to begin every year. Because if a guy is clearly dominant you try to extend him and move him up the ladder.

I can see Hoff making quite a career as a righty-righty specialist. Pitch to three hitters a week and make a bunch of money hanging out in the bullpen for 15 years. Good for him.
