I think I'm to the point looking at this deal that I'd like at least a little risk (not enough to straight up hire an assistant coach) on the chance that we strike gold versus just hiring a "solid" coach and hoping that they can do a little better than they have previously so I like Mack.
The deal at Louisville was bizarre, but not really his fault, and a situation like that can turn super toxic in a hurry which obviously it did.

If this thread is any indication, the folks who regularly follow college hoops would be pretty on board with this hire, while the folks who just love a coaching search, only watch the first weekend of the tournament and generally just want to be mad will hate it. That means it is probably a pretty good hire!
He turned down a lot of offers to stay at Xavier. Was a really hot commodity for a good while till Louisville plucked him.
He also fits a theme of some of the names we've been bouncing around, power balds.
I thought Mack was going back to Xavier but they hired Richard Pitino instead. Guess they didn't want another Sean Miller that couldn't be trusted to stay.

This would be a great hire, IMO. He's a proven very good coach in that Xavier coaching fraternity. Would be great that his mentor is just west of him here. Hopefully we show him a great package (asst salary, base salary, incentives, NIL, NEW ARENA - just kidding).
The SEC coaching ranks is now full of sharks. Hire an assistant or mid-major 'up and comer' and of course real risk of getting eaten. Chris Mack would not be a sure-thing either but combined with an appropriate commitment to NIL then you feel better about the A&M coach being able to swim as another shark in that shark tank.

He had a couple of guys drafted at Louisville too. Nwora and Johnson.
He's had NBA guys on his roster in both Xavier and Louisville. But I'm more impressed that he has won in both spots with out top 50 talent.
I asked my Kentucky obsessed best friend what she thought of him. She said he was a jerk. Apparently a video of him in a drunken stupor trashing Kentucky made the circuit.

Why don't you just go ahead and make a list of the guys that fit your criteria for a coach. Obviously none of the realistic targets we're talking about do because you just pick and choose whichever data you like the least about them and post it with no context.
They didn't make it out of the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. That's his mark for whether a season is any good or not.
