I think one of the priorities either this off-season or next off-season should be locking up young stars in Diaz and Brown to extensions while they are still cheaper

Just look at last year and the response to when Josh faltered. He cannot exceed expectations of his contract. He will either meet or fall short.

I suspect fans already feel he fell short last year.

Brown just signed with Boras this offseason. He won't be cheap.

Good point. Hader was overpaid the minute he signed.

Jim Crane's name grab doesn't need to meet those rules.

Wish we could have gotten a little more done during the winter meetings. Feels like it's going to be slow the rest of the way out until the season.

It does feel like we overpaid for Hader but he was also a lot better then Pressly last year.

The back end of our bullpen would be yet another position of need if we didn't have him.

I think it was definitely an overpay but as long as he is really good for us over the next four years it won't really hurt as much. I'd rather overpay somebody that still produces at a good level than have him go to a competitor (I think Texas was on the list of suitors for him)

It hurts because what the Astros paid for him could go to multiple other guys or to AB this year. You can find back end of the bullpen easier than you can find an all-star 3B like AB. You can find back of the bullpen cheaper while you fill multiple positions of need.

My opinion -- Hader was a bad overpay and hurts the organization no matter his production level. It might hurt the organization less if he produces at really good level, but it still hurts the team.

I disagree on your last sentence. I will never overpay for a guy to keep him from a team within the division if it hurts my team.

He desperately needs a third pitch. He's too predictable, and the older he gets, the less "FU" there will be on his fastball.

chandler driving me straight into the athletic's pay wall.

I hate to be the dumb guy in the room more often than necessary, but why are we all so anti-framber? I know he's a FA after '25, but wouldn't it make more sense to see if we're a good team this year, and if not trade him at the deadline where someone is guaranteed to significantly overpay for a top flight starter?

"Reader View" on an apple device is your pathway to reading the Athletic/Chandler articles for free. Click the icon on the left side of the url bar at the top and select Reader View in the dropdown.

I'm a little surprised Alex hasn't signed anywhere. I thought for sure he'd be signed by now.

Make me think that we have the best offer and Boras is working the phones trying to find a better deal.

Either that or it makes me think no one is willing to go $200M as he wants. I think there could be some slightly better offers, but I do believe no one is at $200M.

Yes, please.

Diaz & Brown are both 26 with 4 years left. Parades is a little younger with 3. I would offer all 3 a 2-year extension at 25 M per year with upfront bonus money to entice them. It would look something like this:

Diaz & Brown: 6/77 M (3 M signing bonus, 2 M, 4 M, 8 M, 12 M, 24 M, 24 M) - 12.8 AAV
  • This is the Javier deal plus 15% and 1 year earlier in the process.

Pardes: 5/95 M (10 M signing bonus, 7 M, 13 M, 19 M, 23 M, 23 M) - 19 M AAV
  • Paredes is much farther along (year 2) and has 4 years of arb. He will naturally cost more and require more upfront money to lock in.

His self worth judgement (and that of Boras) and the people who offer baseball contracts don't agree with each other. He wouldn't be the first Boras client to be in that position.

Wouldn't surprise me if he's still shellshocked no one is willing to throw $250-275 at him.

Now that Parades is on board, I wonder if our offer is still on the table. I would assume so but it's not a definitive sure thing.

I have to wonder if the situation with his elbow at the end of last season has some clubs spooked about offering him a long term deal for full value.

The Astros raised their offer recently (no idea what the current number is or the exact day it happened) but they do not have the highest offer as of right now

Obviously we did the big trade before Breggy signed somewhere, but I can't help believing we are waiting for him to officially decide before we make more moves (at least any significant moves).

Maybe he will pull a Snell and end up having to take a 1-2 year deal

Unless he thinks he could get more in two years that would not be that wise. If the Astros upped their offer just take it for the 6 and be done.

Would not be wise but I remember Snell and Montgomery kind of played themselves of the deals they wanted by waiting too long and thinking they deserved more. Both were Boras guys

It worked for Snell. It was a complete disaster for Monty.

I don't think it would be a good deal for Bregs either. The offers are in, they are not changing by 20-30 million at this point. He did not get the money or years that he was looking for.

Or maybe teams are worried about his medical like they were with Correa. Alex often looks like a very old man for being 30.

Wish I could go back in time and watch him evolve at the plate in 2018-2019, what a beast he was. Should have won MVP in '19.
