Would be nice to see us make a lower profile deal for a veteran starter in the next week or so. A guy on a bad team with an expiring contract so we don't have to give up much.
I presume the rotation post July 31 will be JV, Cole, headline trade acquisition, Miley and Peacock. So the lower profile acquisition wouldn't necessarily have a rotation spot. But would be nice to have some depth so we can keep guys rested down the stretch.

You are correct. I get the terminology mixed up with this. I thought they had to be placed on Waivers and then DFA.

Peacock is like McHugh...I like him in the pen and don't want him in the rotation.
But a random acquisition for a guy like Mike Fiers who can slot in at #5 and bump Brad to the BP would be nice.

We can get by with Peacock and McHugh as the #5 to finish the year. We need anything big-time arm. I wouldn't mid a lefty for the pen either.

Our BP will be completely gassed and worthless come playoff time.
It's embarrassing how little production we're getting out of the #4/5 spot in the rotation. A guy who can just give us 5 IP who won't make the playoff roster will go a long ways in the 2nd half.
That's the thing. If you're fine with McHugh or Peacock as the 5, I won't argue. That just means we need to get a low profile vet reliever in here. One way or another we need to get two more veteran arms. One headliner and one low profile.

I'd take another shot with McHugh as a starter this season. Especially once Joe Smith comes back and provides mid inning relief.
Worst case scenario: McHugh struggles again and you move him back to the pen for the remainder of the season / postseason. Best case scenario: McHugh does decent and can chew up 6 innings a start post a high 3 - low 4 ERA. I think eating innings as a starter would outweigh his value as a reliever during the regular season.

My sense is that we're pretty committed to Bullpen McQ for the remainder of the year. More likely that Peacock stays in the rotation if we don't acquire a #5. But we shall see.

But I think I can assume this Hs just been a bad stretch and that they can go 5 innings the majority of nights

Maybe it's just me but seeing the total lack of depth in the minors I really worry about trading away what few hopes we have on a guy we may only rent or have 1 extra year of control over.
If we want any chance at paying our guys ie springer, we have to get younger in the rotation. Just my .02

Agreed he's mediocre at best. And I agree with another poster that he's probably destined for a bullpen.
But at this moment, I think the best thing for the bullpen would be a mediocre 5th starter who can consistently get you 5 or 6 innings. I wouldn't consider McHugh a postseason starter.

Lack of depth or lack of players ready to step in on a WS contending team now.
We still have some pretty highly regarded guys who just didn't light the world on fire right away in their early 20s. Most rankings still show up in the top third of baseball.
