I hope we finally get a chance to see Rua play on a regular basis. I've seen that guy just tear it up in Arizona and then never get significant PT in the regular season.

He's had plenty of chances. He doesn't produce
Right. He's got 370 AB's over the past 2 seasons, which is a pretty good chunk of opportunity. But when you strike out 130 times, hit about .240, and demonstrate little power, you're not exactly seizing the opportunity. He was really bad last season. Struck out in over 40% of his 130 AB's while hitting .217 with 3 dingers. That's lineup killing production, or lack thereof.
Rua is a great AAAA player.

I saw one article after one of his previous subpar outings say he was still adjusting to the different size baseball. Didn't he have all off-season to start that process?

I also read somewhere that he is having trouble hitting curveballs
And he may not even be that. Career .802 OPS in AAA. Career .694 OPS in MLB. We'll split the difference and call that .750 in "AAAA", which is pretty mediocre for a corner outfielder. He's just a dude.duck79 said:

I expected that to be the case, so I was looking into the differences, last summer, as he was getting so much pub.
An article I found indicated the difference isn't as dramatic, as it once was. Apparently they closed the gap in difference. Still not the same ball, but close enough.
I ranted most of the Fall, that he would have limited... if any impact at the MLB level for 2018.

Lots of pitchers play with first degree UCL tears; it could be or become a problem but his injury is pretty common across the league.
Everyone got the health report about the October elbow injection when he was first posted and everyone wanted him. As it is, he's a 23 year old who didn't pitch much last year who will make the league minimum. If he wasn't born in Asia this wouldn't be the story it is.

My concern about the UCL would be the fact he managed to do it in a year where he's largely been on the shelf and only threw 25 innings. Yes, pitchers get strained UCLs. Many battle through and some end up with TJ surgery. We all know this. But to have a guy needing a platelet injection in October after a year where he basically didn't pitch. It's at least a little interesting. Not writing him off by any means.
Yeah, it's interesting, although I don't think I've read when the injury "happened." The injection was meant to address an existing, non-acute condition, I've personally not read that the injury even originated last season. They might not even know.

My guess is that it's like many of them where it just built up over time. Just a little weird that it's taking that step of intervention after a year of mostly not pitching when rest is usually the answer for a mild strain. Although maybe he did it in trying to get back into action while dealing with the lingering foot issue, maybe not helped by having a bad wheel/foundation that needed more surgery.

I think most of us knew the Astros would pony up for at least 1 or 2 players -- they aren't going to go back to the dark ages again.
It's that 2nd and 3rd stud contract in addition to the $30M that Altuve gets that will show if they are ready to spend with the big boys or not.
As far as the Altuve contract specifically, I think it's good for both sides. It's expensive, but it's a player in his prime that doesn't really have anything that makes you worry too much about a sharp decline (not reliant on power, small frame so should avoid injury, etc...).
