After I saw the news about Volquez today I was wondering whatever happened to Mr. Diamond. Was surprised to see that his MLB career amounted to 4 games with the Cubs in 2010

In other news, I've decided to take the plunge and asked my girlfriend to marry me. She said yes, for some odd reason.

I saw that and was wondering the same. Odorizzi is 27, under team control through '19, and gets traded for the #27 prospect in the Twins system?

Quote:

Odorizzi, 27, fills a major need for the Twins and has a career 3.83 ERA in 129 appearances (126 starts) since 2012. He has struck out 643, walked 232 and allowed 101 homers in 705 1/3 innings. The Twins had been linked to Rays right-hander Chris Archer, but opted for Odorizzi, who is under control through '19 and will earn $6.3 million this year after winning his arbitration case against Tampa Bay.
Quote:

Palacios, 21, slashed .296/.333/.454 with 21 doubles, 10 triples, 13 home runs and 20 steals in 124 games between Class A Cedar Rapids and Class A Advanced Fort Myers last season. The Twins have plenty of shortstop depth in their system with top prospects such as Nick Gordon, Wander Javier and Royce Lewis. Palacios was their 27th-ranked overall prospect, per MLB Pipeline.

What's JD's fascination with reclamation projects?! Vlquez won't even pitch this year! Yeah it's a minor league deal, but cmon! This is like throwing crap on a wall and calling it abstract art to the fans!

Speaking of retreads... Tolleson is in camp with the Rangers.

lt is a free way to add talent to the system. Free meaning, you don't have a limit like cap on Int'l Pool money... limit to draft... you don't have to give up players via trade.

It allows you to slow down the promotion of young guys. If you don't want to move YoMen, Jurado, Sadzeck to RR, signing all these retreads will help. Having them in Frisco allows JD, et al, to go see them play. It is also a shorter drive, in the event you need to call them up.

I think he has had some success, but more importantly, I think it shows his willingness to turn over every rock, which makes it appear he is outworking his peers.

Who knows... maybe he sees it as a way to create competition in a cheap way. You see some of these guys fighting to get back and suddenly you start looking over your shoulder.

I don't hate the strategy. It reminds me of some of the veteran wheeling and dealing they did just prior to getting good in 2010. Basically play the numbers game odds that one or more of these veterans might actually step up and give you something productive, and worse case if you are out of it anyway by the trade deadline, they may be something to flip. With where they are at with both the big league club and the minor league system, it seems appropriate for 2018.

Agreed. I'd rather see the retreads than make another Chan Ho or Millwood mistake. As mentioned here before, signing Yu or Arrieta was never going to make a lot of sense. If the Rangers could have signed BOTH of those guys, then maybe, but that wasn't going to happen with their price tag.

Admittedly, the FA draft compensation (or lack thereof) for losing a partial season rental have made the strategy a little less appealing than it was 10 years ago because players aren't quite as valuable to flip, but even still, I think it's reasonable for where they are.

I had forgotten to mention the mid-season trade proposition, but worth including.

After reading your 1st post, I was what I was going to say basically what you included here... it is less attractive now, but still could prove to be valuable.

Even if just 1 of these FA signings can be flipped at the deadline for a 8-15th ranked prospect, it was free.

Also have to realize that at this point unless a guy is a bonafide #1-#4, there becomes a question on whether or not he wants to sign with Texas and have to battle it out for a rotation spot with the bevy of #5's they have in camp.
