Is this just another reason God rarely gives Houston nice things.

As for 30/30 guys who can hit .300, field their position, and throw seeds, there just aren't many, are there?
Nope. This is what bugs me about how often the term "5 tool player" is thrown around. Almost always, it's used to describe a guy with pop who can steal bases and is almost never used in consideration of their defensive ability. Nowadays, guys who can go 20/20 aren't that rare, I wish we would stop calling them 5 tool players.

Divine intervention to keep a team with Caminiti & Bagwell, or Ron Washington and Josh Hamilton, from ever winning a championship.

Not a lot of noteworthy matchups on Opening Day... SanFran/LosAngeles will likely be the late ESPN game... Texas/Houston probably the other only noteworthy matchup -- wouldn't surprise me if it's the 6PM ESPN broadcast.

Obviously would prefer a night game, but historically you guys do the Opening Day and Opening night stuff.

I'm cool with either. My sister married a life long Rangers fan so we plan on tailgating a little with some grill action.

I'd still be attending the games even if we lost to the Yankees last season. Opening Day at any ballpark is jam up.

I think most teams try and do Opening Day / Opening Night simply from the ticket sales angle -- the ones that don't it's typically because TV has pushed them to a late start (like Cleveland@Texas this year).

I haven't missed a Stros Opening Day in years and I don't ever recall FP during the day.

Maybe our first AL game was a 3:05 on Sunday (Think it was vs Rangers), but nothing earlier to the best of my knowledge.

IF this years game ends up at 1:05, I hope the weather is favorable.

I can't comment on what the Astros typically do, but it's called Opening Day because most teams play it during the day. Unless it's a national broadcast I assume most teams have their choice of start times (unless ESPN has a restriction on other games like they do with Sunday Night Baseball) -- if Houston has typically chosen evening starts I would guess it's due to attendance.

Apparently the Giants and Cardinals are favorites to land Stanton, but 7 other teams are interested and contacted the Marlins. Wonder if the Rangers are one of those 7...

Dare to dream?

How is our track record with former Cub pitchers? <Not good: Garza>

Arrieta (31-R): 30 GS, 3.53 ERA, 1.218 WHIP
Hamels (33-L): 24 GS, 4.20 ERA, 1.203 WHIP (I don't think I realized how bad his season was)
Perez (26-L): 32 GS, 4.82, 1.535 WHIP
Ohtani? <- I still don't think he'll be a contributor in 2018.

Not exactly striking fear, but if ... if... if...

I'd be fine with Arrieta if it's coupled with a Darvish, Ohtani or even a Lance Lynn.

Arrieta on his own just puts this rotation back where it was last year -- a wildcard contender if things go well.

AP - will stros fans be able to buy single game tickets for opening day through the club or is secondary market our best bet?
Mr Gigem

Sometimes there is a lottery that you can register for online. I would try that. Otherwise, secondary market is the way to go.

Or buy a cheap 10 game plan and get opening day for free, then sell the rest of the games

The Otani stuff is so weird to me. He is just leaving a ton of money on the table to come to the MLB this year. He could get a huge contract next season if he simply just waited a year.

But that's what makes this so interesting to follow. If he's leaving that much money on the table, he must be dead set on playing in the MLB. And if that's the case, why would he be swayed by the team that can offer him the most? It was the rangers but now I think it's the Twins. It'll be very interesting to see where he ends up.
mhayden
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's still the Rangers that can offer the most (the twins article was incorrect). I don't think many have ever thought it was about the money - that's just the one advantage Texas has. He has always been less than a 20% chance of signing here.

Anyone seen an article about the Rangers' Rule V expectations?

I think they have 36 roster spots filled. That would allow them to protect 4 more players by Monday.

I don't like the idea of trading Profar to the Yankees for the players mentioned. Bunch of aging mid-20s RPs who are rule V eligible that the Yankees are trying to dump because they can't protect them all.

Just saw the Rangers are working on extending JD. Which is bringing all the torch carrying Nolan-ites out of their villages.

I don't think the return for Profar is going to be what anyone would really want but what are you gonna do? He's vocal about wanting out. The team has made it clear he's not in the long term plans. Pretty much have to take what you can get for him at this point.

I'm not a Nolan-ite but I'm not through the roof over JD either. An extension for him isn't exactly something I'm celebrating.

I sometimes wonder if some of you remember the GMs we had before Daniels...

In 12 years under Jon Daniels the Rangers have 5 90-win seasons and 4 non-WC playoff appearances (20 wins).

In the 40 years prior to that the Rangers had 3 90-win seasons and 3 non-WC playoff appearances (1 win).

He's not Theo Epstein, but he's a solid GM. He took over as a 28 year old, and within 6 years he won more pennants than the franchise had individual playoff game wins in its entire history. The guy is very good at what he does and I'm perfectly happy with him at the helm going forward.

Just curious, what are some of the good moves Nolan made while with the Rangers? Aside from being a cool figured head, I remember him being the main voice for the Rich Harden, Roy Oswalt, and Lance Berkman moves and against the Yu Darvish bid/signing. None of which are real resume boosters.

As for the Astros, much of that team was already constructed before he got there.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a Nolan fan. I just prefer Nolan the player as opposed to Nolan the front office guy.
