And they got a protected first from OKC. OKC is saving $100 million in luxury tax, and got a player they may use or trade in Schroeder.

Still a little perplexed with what Atlanta got out of it apart from the pick. Even if they buy him out, doesn't he count on this year's book? If so, and this is his only year, might as well play him unless you think you'd be better off paying him to go away.

And that is what is confusing me. I would have to think that them waiving Melo was a stipulation or something, where they had no choice in the matter. Otherwise, if you are paying the guy, why not play him if it makes you better for the year?

I guess Atlanta could be tanking, in which case playing Melo for one year could hurt that cause/draft position. Still, to be an Atlanta fan and have your team pay almost $30 million dollars to a player not to play because it would put a better product on the Court would be hard to swallow.

I'm with you though, confused. It should be spelled out in some articles in the next hour or two.

They just wanted to dump schroder. He's a locker room cancer on a bad contract with legal issues.

I'm on the fence about Carmelo joining the Rockets. Paul and Harden had just the right amount of touches last year, and I like Gordon getting his too. Still if it's happening, might as well sit back and enjoy the ride and trust Morey to pull the plug if necessary. It's not like Melo will cost much.

It would suck to have to trade a pick to unload Anderson's salary for luxury tax reasons, but it is what it is.

If that makes signing Capela happen and gives us more flexibility, do it (but protect the pick depending how far in the future it is).

The Rockets will have about 15-18 mill in cap space if Anderson is traded for expiring and Capela comes off the books. Would you want to gamble trying to get a REAL all-star level player for that or sign Capela long term and have 0 flexibility?

If Anderson is traded for guys who'll come off the books, does that change the Capela situation; do you want him to take the qualifying offer?

It would really really depend on the star being pursued. I keep thinking about CP3 hitting a decline and how another star would mitigate that while we try to figure out what to do with his massive contract.

So many times last season our offense would get stagnate when defenses were staying at the 3 line and at in the paint because they weren't scared of the midrange and luckily Paul would come to the rescue with his jumpers

Need players that can create off the dribble and if needed pull up for a short shot or do a lob, Carmelo used to be great at posting his guys up and doing a short range shot out of it - but he's gotten worse and worse and shoots more long range shots now than ever, many of which are long 2's or contested 3's.

You have guys who can create off the dribble in Harden, Paul, and Gordon. They opened up a ton of easy looks for guys like Ariza, Luc, Green, Anderson, etc. last year. I think the hope would be that Melo could come in and benefit from this type of offense by spacing the floor even more and getting those same easy looks.

Can Dantoni's system become a source of irony for Melo's career? I guess we are going to find out.

I listened to a good coaching podcast this week that said basically this same thing. The main point was that regardless of strategy when your gameplan is so overt, it makes it easier for the defense to guard even if your strategy is mathematically sound.

On the other hand, there is a big difference between CP creating open midrange shots and Carmelo jacking up contested midrange turnarounds. I'm not worried about whether Melo can contribute if he listens to MDA and actually executes the gameplan, I'm worried that he is too far gone/undisciplined to be a different player than he has been.
