The NBA and fairness

Why wouldnt 1-1-1-1-1-1-1 be the most fair?

Pahdz and wac sure aren't as yappy anymore.

Yappy?

I've been enjoying the games with friends, not with my face buried in my phone.

Also...maybe to drunk to type coherently on blackberry keys during said games

Technically it probably is. But I think the competitive advantage is much smaller between 1's and 2-2-1-1-1 as opposed to the latter and 2-3-2. 2-2-1-1-1 is the perfect blend of financial practicality and home-court balance.

The idea of media coverage dictating competitive elements is completely backwards in my mind. But dollars dictate both of those things and as long as everyone is getting paid it's how it's going to be. Although I dislike it, I doubt the players care very much.

The whole reason the NBA exists is to generate revenue, not to determine the best basketball team.
Judge

True. But most things exist for that purpose.

The whole reason? And why does money exist?

I happen to think basketball has some intrinsic value, not merely instrumental value.

Let me put it another way. Suppose the 2-2-1-1-1 generates one billion dollars and the 2-3-2 generates one billion and one dollar. Don't you choose the first? If so, then making money is not the SOLE reason that the NBA exists!

Such a scenario is not possible because you couldn't project revenues with that level of accuracy

Doesn't matter. The fact that the NBA would choose to make less money and take the more competitively fair option shows that making money is not the sole purpose of the NBA. Of course, that's consistent with the claim that making money is the primary purpose of the NBA. Obviously, the primary purpose of the NBA is to make money.

You can't come up with an example that isn't feasible to prove your point.

2-3-2 versus 2-2-1-1-1 means mobilizing everybody 2 times versus 4 for a 7 game series. In addition to the direct financial hit for such a decision, which is easily quantified, there is also the indirect hit of making the championship less attractive or viable for members of the media to attend and cover. Of course the local majors will be there, but I'm sure there are a lot OD international media who would only come in for an event like this which is a very high cost. The impact of this decision is probably much harder to measure, with projections on international viewership and future growth of the sport. You could still make projections and have a decent idea.

I don't think your $1 example proves anything really.

You guys aren't necessarily disagreeing. His $1 example is a boundary tests that proves there is a dollar value on the integrity of the method of determining the best team in the NBA. You're just arguing that the it is both low and uncertain when choosing between the aforementioned alternatives.

How about this one: they might make the most money by holding the NBA championship series in NYC every year. Why don't they do that?

OKC red hot, Heat ice cold. Pretty expected for this game. We'll see how the Heat can respond.

OKC looking good. Miami not taking good shots.

Directv has only 480p format for the hd?? Not that it looks terrible but really?? For a major sports championship shouldn't it be better??

Missed FTs by Wade sheesh. Westbrook knocks down his pullup jumper.

big lead early for OKC. Let's see how the Heat battle back, or if OKC will continue to shoot lights out.

Lebron needs to attack and shoot more. Why is he passing to Battier when he gets 4 ft from the rim?

Perfect way to start for okc. Keep punching them in the mouth and take them out of the game early.

As great as Durant is, the Thunder go as Westbrook goes.
