At this point I would be happy with a 4-0 win with Balogun not having much of an impact at all so people cannot legitimately use this to overshadow success otherwise. If it is a 2-1 game with him scoring the game winner late people are going to flip out even more than they have been already.

Who cares if we win.

Screw Belgium and their whining. If the shoe were on the other foot and De Bruyne had a suspension suspended, they'd be telling us to shut up and explaining to us how we just don't know the rules and justice had been served. Crickets from all of them when other players have similar judgments reversed to allow players to play in competitions including the WC.

Infantino should not have taken the call. Or, at a minimum deferred calls 2 and 3 and whatever else. It would have been obvious from the caller ID what was coming and there is no special knowledge of this issue within the Oval Office. No good was to come of that.

But Infantino cannot help himself as he took this job for the precise reason that he gets calls from such folks.

If you are hosting the largest global event within a country and the country's president calls you, you take the call.

Sure. But like I said, don't take the second and third calls. Actual engagement about the issue was the mistake. No good was to come out of that.

We got our best striker back in the lineup. I would say that's good.

Yeah what a terrible outcome.

Poor guy just thought Trump was calling to invite him to brunch and got sideswiped about a red card.

You would be wrong. Belgium are still favored even with Balogun in the team. They may not have looked great so far, but they are still considered a top team in the world.

Best case scenario at this point to shut everyone up is probably for Balogun to go off with a very minor injury early on and then go on to win.

I am just so tired of FIFA managing to making what should be a slam dunk success of an event into a controversy every four years.

I don't think its fear of the USMNT. None of these big teams should be scared of the USA on the pitch. People are pissed 100% because the US government and specifically Trump got involved and got a result changed that everyone said couldn't be done. It looks like corruption and collusion of the highest order at the biggest sporting event in the world.

That's why people are upset. Again, there would be far less backlash if 1)FIFA had reversed the decision the day after the match and 2) if was simply stated that USSF appealed the red card and won because VAR was wrongly implemented.

As it is right now, it looks like the US gov. simply strong arming FIFA into getting what they want.

You don't think the best hypothetical way to shut everyone up about the red card is to beat them without Balogun?

Obviously, I expect him to start and play, and obviously don't want anyone of our guys hurt. But that would be the best way to shut Belgium and whoever else up for sure.

It was a terrible call that should never have been a red card. It was terrible that it ended a great player's tournament and it was absolutely insane that it happened at all.

With that said, I don't blame the world for being pissed and while I'm happy we get a great player back, I don't think the way it went down was right at all.

For those that disagree (which I'm sure will be most), I'd ask how this is any different than the refs overturning the PI call against tu 2 years ago when the crowd threw a fit?

I don't think you can be honest and support this while claiming that was a trash (pardon the pun) move in Austin.

best case scenario was for the VAR to not be used for assessing red cards.

I don't understand the commentators on ESPN FC. I watched each of them to a person indicate they thought the red card was not the correct call, but also every one of them saying that FIFA should stand by the decision. Why do they think they stand by a decision if they believe it's incorrect? The red card against England last night was a textbook example of a true red card offense. What Messi did in Argentina's first game should have been a red card and didn't even draw a yellow. Why is the correcting of a bad call so offensive to these people?

Yep. If it's the wrong call, it should be corrected.

One of the problems with var, replay or any versions of it is how it's seemingly randomly used or has weird rules abouts it's use and enforcement.

Either use it or don't. Use it to fix everything or don't use it. Subjectively deciding when it might be proper or not to employ it creates an entirely different set of problems.

Again, red cards should already be automatically appealed post match to determine if the penalty was valid or overkill.

This is closer to an ejection for contact to head that is then overturned after. The player still missed that game and the penalty stood (we played with 10 for 30 minutes), the question is whether there should be further punishment.

The most tired thing in all of sports is not using replay to get things right and standing by BS decisions. Good on FIFA for correcting their mishap. I would ask the Belgians, do you truly believe it should have been a red card to begin with? or are you just pissed it is being delayed? Guarantee we all know the answer.

This is exactly why the true villan in all this is FIFA not having a system in place to appeal suspensions and with it, transparency on why an appeal is accepted or rejected.

I doubt anything changes before the game tonight, but who knows. FIFA is making things up as they go.

This should have all been handled within the first 24 hours after the Bosnia game.

Isn't it different though? We know that VAR was used incorrectly and we know that FIFA has the authority to retroactively stay red card suspensions because they had alrady done it for this tournament.

Were technology and rules used outside of procedure during that tu game?

Not a good example, imo. We were punished as was Balogun by being sent off and us having to play with 10 men.

They broke their own rules in making that harmful determination. Them fixing the problem should be applauded, not scorned.

The *****ing and moaning over it is perplexing. "We know that the suspension was given in error, but we submit the error should be sustained because ..... (we're more likely to win with their best scorer suspended)?"

Only in America would this be a domestic controversy. If this happened in another country, any other country, their citizens would be about 99% behind the decision however it came to be.

In most countries politicians being able to influence FIFA to make decisions in their favor is in the job description.
I don’t say this in a braggedocious way. But it’s true. I’ve been right about everything.
