Several angles of it here:

Very, very close but I think RVP is just one notch better.

I'm an ass for saying a goal that almost no one would attempt and yet rvp made it art work is far better than a good hard strike? Give me a break.

The real winner in all of this?

Us. Holy hell what a tournament. Let's hope it keeps this up to the finals!

Personally I still think RVP's is best. In the split second he had, he realized the goalie was a bit forward and lined it up just perfectly to loft it over his head. It had timing, situational awareness, accuracy, and strategy. Cahill's while certainly sweet had timing and power. RVP's wins out still.

Yes, you are. "a good strike"
Dude is backpedaling, at the 18 yard box, catches it clean, with pace, and hits the underside of the cross bar. That is a bit more than a "good strike".

That would be like me saying, van persie had a nice flick header. So yes, you are an ass.

I'm pretty sure van persie had the goal of the season a year back that was virtually identical to Cahill's goal, and no one complained.

I think some people are influenced by the quality of the player as much as the quality of the strike.

Tim Cahill watched the ball all the way in and didn't let the presence of 2 defenders distract him. That volley over the shoulder is much harder thing than it looks and he curled it over the keeper, under the bar. Plus, and this for me is the kicker that puts it over RvP, is that Tim Cahill is not left-footed, yet was able to produce that.

Absolutely. This is a refreshing change from the last couple of WCs. Loving it so far.

RVP's header by the slimmest of margins over Cahill. IMHO.

agree with Mug

Cahill's was incredible, but people have scored that goal before

RVP's was one of a kind IMO

Because profane name calling really elevates your credibility as well.

RVPs goal (for me) is GOTT and GOTY. I've seen lots of one time volleys (and that doesn't make it easy). Never seen anyone make that header before. Full speed over the shoulder not looking at the goal and lobs it over the GK.

For me, Cahill gets a boost because he was actually going against a defender and goalkeeper who were in position. RVP made the great run, but was all alone versus Casillas, who had camped out in no man's land.

by the end of the week, Cahill's goal will be largely forgotten and everyone will still be talking about the superman stunner by RVP. pretty obvious really which constitutes the best goal.

In case anyone cares, the fact that RVP lawn-darted his landing gives his the slight edge for me.

I dunno, RvP had a good run and realized the goLie was out really just had to bump the ball over him... All effort... Badass goal still

Cahill's goal, from my perspective is a "Strikers dream" type of goal. It took body control, vision, and a wicked touch to hit that strike. I just loved it because it is the way I see myself playing and I suspect he probably knew as soon as he touches it that it was a goal. It was all technique, finesse and power. Just beautiful.

I liked Cahills better by a hair... Just MHO

Well, I guess I'm in the minority but Cahills goal is the goal of the tournament. I don't see how anyone will top it either. the skill needed to perform that shot is much higher than the skill needed to perform a header.

Rvp's goal was maybe the best header I've ever seen, but Cahill's goal is better.

luckily all the experts will weigh in and we can go by what they say. I'm guessing they will say Cahill.

Cahills thus far

I think the ball in to RVP, a curling left footer over the defender hitting him instride from 50 yards, may be more impressive than the goal itself.

Either way, I vote Cahill by a slim margin.

I'll take rvp by a hair by slimmest of margins. I can understand Cahill being top too

Here's the thing:

Cahill's goal was fantastic but I've seen similar goals before. I've never seen a goal like RvP's before.

RvP...but they were both brilliant.

Cahill

The distance that the cross was played at and for him to take it on the volley, at that angle, was fantastic

I go back and forth but I usually decide on RVP. They're just very different. RVP's showed more creativity and Cahill's showed more skill. RVP's was perfect for the situation while Cahill's was more "I don't care that you're standing in perfect position, I'll just hit an absolutely unstoppable shot."

I'll give Gervinho credit for a goal that was a touch better than Dempsey's, maybe a contender for top five.
fig96
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Gervinho did a nice job staying on his feet to finish out the goal, could've gone down (probably not a foul) and didn't.

If this was a contest for the best choreographed celebratory dance, then Colombia would have it locked down.

Gervinho's goal was awesome. Probably the best individual run goal thus far, but not up there with Cahill and RVP.

Yeah that Cahill goal was incredibly difficult. Not so much the strike itself, but the read and everything together.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
to determine best goal, which one will you remember four years from now?

RVPs will be remembered, Cahills will be too when an EPL player duplicates it once a month during the season

try it for last world cup. for me it was von brockhorst destroying the ball in a dead sprint from 35 yards out. yours?
wtmartinaggie
How long do you want to ignore this user?
either way, my vote is RVP that goal was one of a kind
