Just watched Jones goal again. Amazing. Kicks it inches past a Portugal defender and curls it into the far corner leaving the goaltender helpless but to sit and watch. Fantastic strike.

You don't realize how good that goal was till seeing it on the replay bending around the defender.

I didn't initially understand how he froze the keeper till I saw it from the other angle...gorgeous.

Not a spectacular finish, but Gyan's goal might be top five for me because of that cross from Asamoah. Outside of his left foot and talk about putting it on a dime.

Jones goal was stupendous! But being a soccer noob I don't understand why it froze the keeper. He seemed to move toward it, then stop. Did he stop because he saw it was going to miss the goal, so no need to defend? (Or so he thought?)

I thought the keeper was blocked and when he picked up the ball it was way too late to do anything but turn his head and watch. I don't think the keeper could've done anything about it even if he picked the ball up off Jone's foot.

^ Yeah see, if that's the case then maybe that goal is his fault. If the ball is headed toward your net, I would think it's your job to go after it. Not calculate if you NEED to go after it.

So can we at least all agree that Jones' goal was the greatest goal (going by skill, not importance) in USA World Cup history?

And I agree with most on here: RVP, Cahill, Jones in that order for top 3 of the tourney.

re: the keeper on Jones goal, he was backing up, so I think he got caught a bit on his heals on top of not being able to see it until late.

Don't think the keeper ever had a chance to move on Jones' goal. Watch the second replay here and I don't think he even picks it up till it's past the defender, he doesn't have a prayer if it's on frame.

And Wynalda's goal, yes. Just perfection.
