Two guys are driving across country and stop at a Dairy Queen in Mexia for lunch. They saw the sign saying "Welcome to Mexia" a few minutes earlier and were arguing about how the city name was pronounced.

One said "It is pronounced Mex-e-ah"

The other one said "No, it is a weird prononunciation, it is pronounced Mah-hee-ah."

They keep argiung and when they get to the front of the line, they ask the clerk: "How do you pronounce the name of this place?"

The clerk looks at them and says, very slowly "Dairy Queen."

I've always liked that story.

Ok I grew up in Waco and I've always heard "Mexia" pronounced, "Ma-HAY-uh".

Where did this "Mahair" come from?

I always pronounced Mexia as "muh-hay-uh"

My hometown - Agua Dulce - means "sweet water" in english.
I also used to work in Coyanosa. "Ki-yan-osa"

Nice to see my home town of Mexia getting some mention on texags, but to settle the dispute it's pronounced Muh-hey-uh. Mahair is something a redneck says to reference the stuff on top of his head.

If you know Mahair, then you know Junior Lide. As long as I have known that man, it has been pronounced Mahair.

Cleburne - Many outsiders get this one way wrong! and I am suprised each and everytime! Its clEE-burn (long e), not claburnie.

Once, when I went on band trip to St. Louis, the hotel we stayed at put out a sign welcoming us that said, "Welcome Claybourn Band!" We all had a good laugh over that one. I guess that gives everyone an idea of what type of an accent people in Cleburne have.

I say Ma-hay-uh too.

You'd be surprised at how many people screw up Sugar Land. They like to combine Sugar and Land into sugarland.

And thanks for bringing up Balmorhea. Everybody I've asked about it wants to say it like "diarrhea" just because of the spelling. Lampasas always seems to throw a lot of people for a loop.

And who in the hell knew Heidenheimer? That's my neck of the woods!

seems straighforward, but to the old timers it's pronounced "Colo-ray-do". It's sometime slurred together and becomes "Cah-ray-do City". The only instance I know of where Texans actually reduce the number of syllables.
