Hard g / gym
Soft g / rag
A hard g actually is a voiced velar plosive like my name (Greg). A soft g sounds like j and is an affricate and is usually due to a softening by the vowel that follows it like the g in George.

What that said the I doesn't soften the typical Central Texas pronunciation, but the rest of the world thinks especially of Elgin watches which uses the soft g or j sound.

One of the things that ought to be taught in our schools prior to high school language classes is IPA symbols and their meaning with auditory guides to confirm. Then at least we start with standardized notation before new languages…

Here you go. Proper pronunciation of every town in Texas.
Maybe that is right, but growing up in the 70's in Plano I always heard Altoga as "Altogy" and Tioga as "Tiogy". This was from people who grew up nearby in Farmersville. Possibly some regional affectation.

God Bless Dr. Wayne Ahr. His 45 min lecture on why it's "Muh-hair" will always stick with me. No clue why Mexia's pronunciation had anything to do with petroleum geology, but I felt like a real Texan who knows stuff after.

Vielen Dank. I can't remember who wrote the original but the German doesn't make any sense. Love it anyway. I always figured they wrote those words only because hotels and Braunfels rhymed.
