A hard g actually is a voiced velar plosive like my name (Greg). A soft g sounds like j and is an affricate and is usually due to a softening by the vowel that follows it like the g in George.agfan1030 said:

What that said the I doesn't soften the typical Central Texas pronunciation, but the rest of the world thinks especially of Elgin watches which uses the soft g or j sound.
One of the things that ought to be taught in our schools prior to high school language classes is IPA symbols and their meaning with auditory guides to confirm. Then at least we start with standardized notation before new languages…
