Do most teams usually squib kick the opening kick off the second half? I guess I've haven't watched enough Mizzou this year to know they have such potent kick returners. Even then, you would think the strategy would be to kick it through the endzone.

I have zero issue if a female makes the team because she is better than the boys, but let's stop pretending she's some great athlete because she had a kick-off on par with middle school boy kickers. If we accept Vandy's side of the story, she got the job because the entire kicking unit was out due to COVID, they don't have a men's team, and they couldn't hold open tryouts due to the student body being gone on break. What's the message we send to little girls? If you work hard, you too can have a chance to play football during the next pandemic?

Not to get into the Vanderbilt kicker thing. One of the best kickers TAMU had was Scott Slater. Not only could he kick, he could hit. I can't remember which game it was but he knocked a return guy into the next week.

Talk about believing your own hype ... If you look closely, that wasn't anywhere near the full field. It went from the edge of the center circle to the 18-yard box. Soccer field dimensions vary a bit, but that made it about 45 yards from ground to ground. Since a soccer ball goes further than a football, that translates to about a 35-yard kickoff or a 30-yard field goal.

Vanderbilt kicker Sarah Fuller became the first woman to play in a Power Five college football game, but Missouri shutout Vanderbilt and rarely allowed them to cross midfield. On the next day, Vanderbilt fired head coach Derek Mason. Vanderbilt went 0-8 and lost 5 of those 8 games by 21 or more points. The three teams that beat Vanderbilt by 7 or fewer points are Texas A&M, Mississippi State, and Kentucky.

I'm not doubting this, but do you have a source for the naive who think Fuller really earned that spot?

If they wanted to use a female payer, they should have used one that had a comparable skill level to whoever already held that position. This was more of a "little Billy has cancer so we're going to let him score a touchdown on the big stage" move. It's a nice gesture but it was done out charity, not actual opportunity. In doing so she didn't earn or prove anything and the whole ordeal only takes away from when a female does deservedly merit a position on a P5 team.

If they had put her in an actual position to prove herself it wouldn't have been so hollow. I think she should have played incognito until making a fieldgoal and revealing that she was a woman in surprise fashion, probably playing out poorly

This thing is about to blow up. Vanderbilt's kicker from 2019, Ryley Guay, is in medical school at VU and has a season of eligibility remaining as he redshirted as a freshman. When their regular kickers went into quarantine last week, he agreed to come back on the team to help out, but he wasn't able to clear the COVID protocols and such fast enough to play last week. He's apparently near completing that now and has been practicing with the team and kicking well this week. Despite clearly giving the team its best option (and a better one than the walk-on starting kicker this season), he's been told that he would be behind Fuller on the depth chart even after he's approved to play. Reports are starting to come out in the last couple hours that at least another half dozen Vanderbilt players have opted out as a result, including a captain.

Yep. That's my position on it. If she had actually earned it and beaten out other people trying out, including current kickers on the team that are eligible (punters), then I wouldn't have an issue with it. But she didn't. The opportunity was given to her solely by the fact she's a woman.

She'll give a pre-game speech about how they were quitters.
