You really need to contact the University and negotiate some deal with them for preservation and display. These are the types of items that belong in Cushing.
I'd also highly recommend you looking at getting these things insured. My grandfather has a sash from his great (x whatever) grandfather that fought along side of George Washington in the revolution - full documentation and provenance as well. The Daughters of the American Revolution helped in getting it appraised for insurance purposes, as well as how to display it without damaging or degrading the item over time.
