Roswell G. Higginbotham, known as “Little Hig,” first gained prominence as an outstanding backfield football player at Sherman High School, Texas, and went on to become a renowned football and baseball player at Texas A&M from 1917 to 1920. In his junior year, he pitched a no-hitter against the University of Texas, and was a football All-Southwest Conference back in 1919 and 1920.

Fullback - Mahan - A&M



He was the first Aggie to ever compete in the Olympics (1920)and he was in the Men's Javelin Throw, finishing 12th.

Elected to the Aggie Hall-of-Fame in 1965. Jack Mahan was captain of A&M football team in 1919 and 1920. Under him the Aggies were unbeaten, untied, and unscored upon until the last game. They score a total of 329 points and the opposing teams scored a total of 7.

I know about that Longhorn flag at my grandparents old ranch. Passed by it awhile back and thought about going in and saying howdy to the owners. They used to have Longhorns on the property too. Not sure if they still do. How do you know where my grandparents lived?

I can tell you that I have spoken to a respected author that wants to write a book about the Aggie War Hymn and he wants to get it published in time to coincide with the 100 year Anniversary of the beginning of WW1.

This thread is amazing. I feel honored just to be able to see this unfold.

AWH, my great uncle was in school around the same time as your grandfather. His name was John Wesley "Dough" Rollins and I think was captain on the '13-0' team and played from around 1914 to 1917 or so. I'm curious if you might have any references to him in your trunk of stuff?

Dough went on to coach for A&M and was, I believe, a backs coach on the '39 NC team. He also served briefly in '47 as AD, I suppose filling in until a new one could be found. He went on to be HC for what is now Texas A&M - Commerce.

I have heard of great-uncle Dough but have not seen any references of him in my grandfathers stuff. I'll keep an eye out for him and let you know if I run across anything about him.

War Hymn - I'm good friends with the family that owns the property across the road from your grandparents place in Joppa. They are not Aggies because of any direct affiliation with the University, but because they all have very fond memories of your grandfather. Because of him, they are huge Aggies fans. They talk about him all the time.

Grandparents on my mother's side were born & raised in the Joppa Community as well and also owned a ranch near my Wilson Grandparents.

War hymn, regarding the branding party photos, I believe I have a photo of the purported group and maybe some written documentation. Also, just acquired a portion of the Sam Houston Sanders estate that includes many photos and newspapers from 1917 through 1921. I will give a look and see what I can find
